Sorry if this has been asked before (I didn't find this in Search), but...

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why someone would buy a putter for $150-$300, when they could just buy one for $20-$50 instead?

I realize that it is all about weight, looks, feel... stuff like that. I was kind of just wondering why those of you who purchased an expensive putter (Example: SC Putters)? Do these putters actually help your putting as much as the cost would suggest they do? Or is it Name Brand first type thing?

I guess my other question's are; those of you who bought a putter for over $150's... Why? Do you feel that it is worth it? And what made you choose that putter over a nice $30-50 putter?

I have no problem with buying an expensive putter, if it is going to be worth it in the end...

Thanks,

Michael

Why do some people buy $50,000 cars instead of $20,000 ones?

It's all personal preference. You can chose from mallets, blades, perimeter weighted, offset, inserts...etc...

It ultimately comes down to how good it feels and how well you roll it.

And the only way to find out is to try different ones.

I typically use two putters-

One for fast greens and one for slow greens. The one I currently use for fast greens costs about $220.00. The putter I use on slower greens I made myself for about $30 w/ Golfsmith components. And they're totally different styles, weights, materials and lengths.

I think I've said this before but its like this in any arena. Pick one: Cars, watches, guitars, clothing, pens, golf clubs… Almost anything in the world has a bargain and premium market.

When you spend a little more you gain a lot in terms of craftsmanship, design, balance, weight, and the like. A custom or higher end putter is likely to have an extra amount of care put into the manufacturing process including higher quality materials. I believe you can play better when you play the very best. Money is not always an indication of a better item for your personal game. I believe that playing equipment that complements your game will help you score better. That will mean different things to different people. You should look at putters in different price ranges and you'll quickly start to see a difference.

Certainly it is not a straight line kind of decision. I think some of the high end putters are almost works of art. Esthetics, confidence, feel are subjective. I can't stand odessy 2 ball, 3ball putters etc. On the other hand I really don't think $250.00 putters will help you make any more putts than ones in the $125.00 range. But the quality, balance, materials in the $25.00 putters is clearly a step down usually.

All of the replies above have it right.

For me since I've had my new Scotty (click the link in my sig to take a look) I've just wanted to get on the green and putt with it. It's a work of art, a stunningly beautiful putter, and putts as well as it looks.

And that's what it's all about, if you find something that you just love the look of you'll know what I am talking about.

Yup, sometimes it's as much about how it makes

you feel as it is about performance. You'll putt better with one you really like. Also, some of the premium putters are better values in the long run. You can find reasonably nice putters in any price range, but well-cared for Scottys and Bettinardis and others of their ilk will hold their value better than most. Basically, use what works for you. If you feel the premium putter adds something to your game then it probably does.

I understand that the more money you have, the bigger car/boat/house/clubs you can/want to buy... I guess if you have the money and want the technology, then it's a no brainier.

I like the idea of having two putters too... one for fast and one for slow greens.
I think I've said this before but its like this in any arena. Pick one: Cars, watches, guitars, clothing, pens, golf clubs… Almost anything in the world has a bargain and premium market.

I will definitely try a $150-200 putter before I buy it... So, if I were testing out a SC FUTURA PHANTOM ($299) and Cougar X-Cat Black Mallet ($9.99) Putter, and the Cougar feels better to me, I should get the Cougar (This would not happen, I know... But just hypothetical)? I guess if I was hypothetically blindfolded and the Cougar felt better for me, than I probably should get the Cougar... And if the SC felt better, than I should get the SC.

In the end, the SC should feel better (Technologically and weight/feel)... And to some of you, it does... Which should bring your confidence lever up, and your score down. So in that respect, the SC is better for you...

I only got to test SC FUTURA and Odyssey 2 ball putters at the sports store (Not on the real course greens)... I did like the feel of the Futura better than the 2 Ball (The weight/balance was better for me... both just a bit chunky).

I guess if you are a golf nut (As I am starting to be... Almost as much as I am a Fantasy Football Nut), you would only be happy with the best of the best (If Tiger’s happy with it, than why not right). I am not educated enough about how the materials put in putters help the ball yet (But I will look more into that too).
For me...the putter is all about the confidence it gives me when standing on the green. I found the SC (for whatever reason) to give me the most confidence.

I know we all need to have that confidence... So that would be a good enough reason for me...

All of the replies above have it right.

So, it sounds like SC can, not only give you that technology you want, but the confidence too.

I guess if confidence is all you get (Which I know its not), than that should be good enough in itself.
Yup, sometimes it's as much about how it makes

I agree about the value part... I am into photography too (Canon), and those "L" lenses can compare to the better quality SC putters (Or any quality club) in value (But is it enough to pull the trigger and buy one... I guess that’s something that I will have to test on the course).

Thanks for everyones input...

I had always used inexpensive putters until I bought a 2-ball putter last year. Before that, I was using an old Ping Anser that I bought used. I was happy with the Anser but after seeing quite a few of my friends use the 2-ball putter and trying it out, I decided to spend the extra money on a putter. For me, I was able to justify the extra expense not just based on feel or confidence but on the simple logic that using that alignment system helped to remove one of the variables from my putting. My putting improved as a result. Now if I can just get better at distance control!!!

i'd been thinking of buying a new putter for a while, a Ping G5i, because every time i tested one out in the local golf store, it just felt better when i hit the ball, compared to any of the other putters, even the comparably priced ones like the Rossa, and the Odyseys and all. But then as I've still been using my 20 dollar ceramic putter, i realized it was more and more that my current putter is too long. To get a good feel, i almost grip down below my current puttergrip.

So I'm just goin to buy a new grip, and cut an inch or two off my current one and regrip it. In the end if i screw it up.. or i don' like it .. al i did was waste 10 bucks maybe on a cheap putter to begin with.

I'm terrible, but i have fun.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
