  1. 1. Which Iron Set

    • Titleist AP1
      10
    • Mizuno MP 52
      12
    • Nike Victory Full or Split Cavity
      5

Due to an issue with my current clubs I may be looking for something else. I like the looks of these 3, so i thought I would ask for thoughts before I go demo them tomorrow.

Demo all three sets and buy the ones that feel and work best for you. You might also want to consider trying some of those that you don't like the looks of quite as much. They may surprise you, and I mean that in a good way.

Funny you should say that; each is on my list of irons to consider for my next set.

The AP1s are game improvement irons. If I got these, I'd mix with some AP2s for the shorter irons.

The MP-52s are players' cavities. Depending on how strong your iron game is, you might want to consider MX series for the longer irons.

The Victory Reds mix well.

Of the four you mention explicitly, I think the MP-52s feel the best at impact. As for GI irons, I prefer the VR FC over the AP1s. I prefer the MP-52s over the VR split cavities.

What are YOU looking for in irons? We all seek different things, even at comparable handicap levels.

AP1 are a gift from the gods. Finally Titleist made an iron set for those who aren't scratch.

They are really light and have a very nice feel. Probably the cheapest too.

If you;re a 19 then I would get the AP1's. They'll last you a long time, and when you're ready for something less forgiving you'll be ready...

I've been playing Cavity Backs, but have slowly started working in some Muscle Back blades. I've switched the Wedges already and will add the 9 iron in next month...

Doesn't matter what we think, you are the one playing them. It is like asking what power to get on your glasses before going to an optometrist. The clubs are supposed to fit you, not anyone else.

Whatever clubs you get, they will last a long time as long as you treat them right.

+1.

I've tried the AP2's(not the same thing i know) and didn't really like them. The MP52's are really nice, great feel off them and still pretty forgiving. I haven't tried the VR's but I'd say they'd be good clubs too.

Yeah I know what you are saying, it's just hard to get over the looks of some of the stuff out there haha.

Thanks for all the thoughts, I am looking for something a little more forgiving in the longer irons. With my Pro Combos I am right on from 6-pw but could use a little help with 3-5. I use to play hybrids but did not care for them other than my 2h. So I was thinking of mixing a set, whether that be with the Nike's, Mizzys, or AP line. I have also given thought to a g10/i10 mix, but I rarely hear anything about their stuff on here.

Well as I stated in the original post, I am merely looking for opinions as this is a forum and I enjoy reading what others think about said irons. I also stated that I will be demoing them all and others before making my own decision. This is just for fun and to see what experience others have.

As far as how long the clubs will last, I have no doubt mine will last a long time. Heck I put iron covers on my Nikes during transport, so I am probably more OCD than others on here when it comes to treatment of equipment.

I didn't vote, because it's a tie between AP1s and the Nike Split Cavity.

I've hit both clubs on the launch monitor several times, and liked the feel and the engineering of both. If I could get the specific shaft I wanted, either one would work fine for me.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I think mp-52's are too much club. Your handicap would suggest the ap-1. I dont have experience with the Nike clubs. I would be looking at ap1 or g15's.

As of recently, I was considering several mixes. I know the AP were built to mix, that Mizuno's brochure lists mixing a set as an idea, and the VR all share a name for a reason.

You might go with, for example, Mizuno MX-200 for your 3-5, then grab MP-52s for 6-P. Mizuno's brochure lists a similar example with MX-300 and MP-58. You could also look into the MP FLI-HI for long irons. I'm not entirely certain how it compares with an MX series. For some reason, I thought they were releasing through 5 for it, but their site lists only to 4. You can do similar with Nike VR FC/SC and Titleist AP1/AP2. The Ping series mix quite well, I believe, too. However, many of us on this forum have a forged iron preference, and the Pings i10s aren't forged. But the i10s do have the advantage that the players' irons go through the wedges in availability; meanwhile, the AP2 and Adams CB1/MB stop at GW, and the rest at PW.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying, but this is something I feel people on here focus wayyyyy too much on. My last 2 scores at courses I've only played twice were 87 and 90. I am improving a lot, particularly with my chipping and putting which is making a big difference. I fully expect to be shooting low-mid 80s on a regular basis within a couple of months due to a lot of practice time : )

It's been said lots of times, and it warrants being said again, and because you're going to hear people saying the opposite quite a bit: your handicap is only one small factor in what irons to get. If you were completely clueless as to which irons to get, and you insisted on buying something RIGHT NOW, I'd use it to guide you to a particular set. But there are guys on tour with GI and SGI irons in their bag, some as a near-complete set. And there are plenty of guys who make good just fine with players' irons.

Company representatives who understand this greatly influence which line of clubs I consider, probably more than they should. Three years ago, a Cobra rep didn't want to let me even try their GI irons, on account my handicap wasn't under 20. A TM rep practically hid the R9 from me earlier this year when he found out I wasn't low single digits. By contrast, the Mizuno reps have no problem handing me the demo MP iron, although one recently suggested the combo set (and pointed out the idea in the brochure). The Titleist rep the next day took me through AP2 and CB before telling me my swing was too good for my handicap level. The Nike rep last week had no problem letting me try the TW blades.

Not saying you can't play the MP-52s, but I don't see what a switch from the Pro Combos to the MP-52s would accomplish.

Make sure you try different shafts with the different heads. The MP-52's are more forging with a softer shaft
