I was playing nine today, and the guy I paired with was cheating alot. Not taking his OB penalties, pulling the ball up out of the rough onto the fairway, just stupid stuff, and recording bogus scores. A 7 down to a 4? Come on now..

Anyways, I like hearing about people who cheat, I know lame right? Haha. What are some of your cheater stories?

We have about six guys that play together and one guy will pad his score every round by about 5 strokes. We don't care because we are used to it. The only time it bothers me is when he pads his score and goes back and tells people that be beat my a$$.

Yeah, I was counting his shots on number 9. He shot a 8, he recorded a 5. I mean, I didnt bring it up, it was just a friendly game. But if you arent palying for money, then why would you cheat? You are just cheating yourself..

I have a friend whom i play with who does this as well. If he hits it in a bad spot he'll just move the ball till he has a clear shot at the fairway or green (e.g. behind a tree, lands in a divot, etc.) the best is when he's putting though. we play with a "if it's inside the shaft of the putter you're good" rule most of the time. however, not for birdies or pars and someone must say ok (e.g. "it's good", "you're good", etc.) he just picks up the ball sometimes as far out as 5 feet.

not to mention the crazy stroke count he does...

I have 2 buddies I play with who are not that good at golf. They don't know all the rules, and if I made them follow them I would look like a jerk, and they wouldn't enjoy the game. They don't count OB strokes and if a ball is buried or something they will move it. If I am playing with them, I will play the same way they are. I know it isn't a real score and "I'm only cheating myself", but if we all have fun, its cool with me. That's what it is all about anyway right?

In 7th grade I played in a tournament and was doing pretty well (in line for 2nd place) until I made a 9 and then an 8 on back to back holes. One of my playing partners (who was a few shots back of me before those two hole) accused me of cheating on the hole i got they 8 one. He was wrong, and actually HE was the one who was cheating. He had been conspiring with the 2 other guys in out group (both his friends), and the one who had his scorecard was giving him a stroke less on nearly every hole. Luckily I wrote down his scores and remembers most of his shots so I was able to knock him off his pedestal.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I hate the guy who uses a tee on the fairway. I have played with a few guys over the years that did that exact thing.
I would just laugh especially when they talked about there low score in the club afterwards.

For years my father in law would, when he made a bad tee shot, give himself a mulligan and expect me to not count his first shot. I ignored it until about 4 years ago when he accused me of taking two strokes less on a hole than what he thought I should have. Problem was, I was counting my strokes and he wasn't. I haven't played with him again to this day. My younger brother has played a couple of times with him and said he did the same thing with him.

I cheated once in a junior tournament. Hit an errant tee shot, couldn't find it, dropped another ball. No one was around. That was the 15th hole which I "bogied" then finished birdie par birdie and ended up tying for 2nd. It was stupid and I hate that I did it and I'm really glad I didn't win. Just admitting that so you know I'm not claiming to be some superior never-cheated-before golfer. Having said that it really bothers me when people are obviously cheating (fixing their lie, foot wedge, score padding, gimmes from 2-5 feet), even just casual rounds. If you want to play golf then play golf and play it as it lies and get it in all the way in the hole. And count right. A guy I played with the other week constantly took gimmes and didn't count duffs or lip outs etc. He said he shot 84 and it was obvious that he was a maybe break 100 type of guy. I wanted to say "yeah I guess you did hit the ball 84 times (at least) but you didn't score an 84 in an actual round of golf" but instead said "cool" and left him to his ways. I think it just bothers me that it doesn't bother him. Oh well.

Sometimes I will still take a drop when I have a lost ball but only to keep up the pace of play and I'll add 2 penalty strokes but that's as close as I get to cheating.

Fore!

If Im playing a round with friends, I may just take an 8 on a hole if Im blowing it up fortunately that hasnt happened much lately. These days My 8's are true 8's.
I was told that my HI doesnt permit me to take a 9 on a par4 and Im too good to hack all over the course when I know the next hole will be par to double bogey.

If $ is on the line, then I never cheat, although I dont consider my actions cheating. Reason is nearly every round I play is a practice round or a learning experience. If I finish with a 102 and one hole was a 12 since I was forced to count every stroke, I dont find that its a true bearing of my play. I dont improve lies, but will find some grass if im on tree roots, if $ is on the line Ill ask permission. Today I played every hole and counted every stroke, shot a 95.

Years ago I played with a guy that I did not know well. We had been in the same foursome at a club outing and he called me a few weeks later to play.

Based on that other day, it seemed we were of roughly equal ability and, since he wanted to, I agreed to play skins for a few bucks (not big stakes, but enough to get your attention).

On one of the holes he ended up hitting his tee shot way left over a hill and, apparently, into the adjacent fairway. My tee shot landed in the same general vicinity on the left side of our own fairway, and so I helped him look for his ball. We eventually found it in a fairway bunker on the other hole.

As he prepared to play, I walked back over the hill to my ball (where I could no longer see him) and waited for him to hit.

After a few seconds I heard a distinct thump of club hitting sand, but never saw a ball.

A few seconds later there was a second distinct thump and this time the ball came over the hill and landed in our own fairway.

From that spot, he hit his ball onto the green and two putted.

In the meantime, I hit my ball into a green-side bunker, hit a so-so sand shot and ended up making bogey.

As we walked back to the cart he announced that he was psyched to save bogey after that errant drive and halve the hole.

I said "didn't you take two from the sand?", but he adamantly denied it, saying that he picked it clean, etc.

He ended up winning that day by 1, which I have always felt was a scam, and as a result I just don't bet anymore on the golf course.

Never played with that guy again, either.

Who even thinks of something like that, seriously? I've never even thought about pulling out a TEE in the fairway!

I played with a gentleman and his wife a few weeks back (I didn't know them before the round). It seems like he got pretty competitive with me because I was hitting my driver pretty well that day. He would hit 2-3 shots off the tee on the final 4 holes. He was visibly swinging out of his shoes, and as such he would either slice or shank every one. He would also chip at least twice on every green, because his first chip always sucked.

Anyway, I guess you can say he set the example for his wife who, on the 18th hole par 5, inexplicably pulled out a tee smack dab in the middle of the fairway on her approach shot to the green from about 160 yards out. I didn't even notice as I was about 5 yards ahead of her (50 yards to the left of her, looking at my lie) until I turned around and saw her ball propped up about 2 inches above the ground. I would not have believed it had I not been there to see it. Brandon

A lot of books recommend it as a way of making it easier and keeping frustration down when beginning. My wife did it the first couple of rounds the two of us played together.

I have read about some guy using green lifesavers in the fairway as a tee in club tournaments. Apparently they are obliterated when struck so you have to catch them setting them up.

I really don't enjoy folks who even pad their score by 2-3. This afternoon I played 9 (par 36) with a good buddy of mine. He claims he shot a 38 and I shot a 51. I know for a fact I shot a 51 and he shot at least a 45. Granted it was raining and the course was playing long, he definitely didn't shoot a 38. It's just a bit disheartening when you know you're being honest and you're playing parner(s) is not.

There it is, my first post on this here forum. At least it's an honest one.

I played with a guy who was in a deep greenside bunker while the rest of us were on the green waiting for him to hit. I never heard a club hit the sand but the ball mysteriously popped over the lip with no spin at all right next to the hole.
