shaft flex for 91 mph swing

I play with R irons but I have always play with Stiff Drivers. Most of my friends are the same. I don't even remember why I decided to played with Stiff driver since the beginning. Today I was at GolfSmith and I used the Launch Monitor to check my swing speed for the first time. My average driver's club head speed was 91 MPH and carry was about 195 yards resulting in 210-220 yards. I don't know why but I hit longer on the course, carry about 210-220 and averaging about 240. I checked many times with a GPS unit so it is not like I only remember my best drives. Should I be looking at R flex for my driver?

Re: shaft flex for 91 mph swing

I would not worry about what flex the club is... Just worry about the numbers that the launch mointer is putter out. Launch angle, Spin raitings, ect ect.
If you hit it good why worry about it?

But if you want me to answer your question very generaly, Yes you should be looking for a reg flex. 95 MPH is boarder line stiff shaft.

Re: shaft flex for 91 mph swing

On certain forums, that swing speed would put you in an X-flex shaft... ;) Seriously though, you could pull off a stiff flex in certain shaft and loft combinations, but more than likely, you'd benefit from a regular flex shaft.

Re: shaft flex for 91 mph swing

Swing speed is only one element to consider. If you have a very fast transition you might find an S flex works better for you, and then of course the R, S and X designations may differ quite a bit from company to company.

Ultimately the only way to really know is to try different clubs and see what works best for you.

Unless you're consistently pushing and/or fading your drives, I'd stick with the stiff shaft.

Re: shaft flex for 91 mph swing

I read several years ago in a golf magazine that most golfers tend to buy and use drivers with shafts that are too stiff for their swing speeds. That same article suggested that those with a swing speed of less than 90 mph would realize a distance benefit from an a-flex shafted driver (or senior flex, depending on what the manufacturer calls it). I had my swing speed with the driver checked and it was 89 mph. I was looking at the Ping TiSi Tec drivers at the time and found an exceptional deal on one with a stiff shaft so I thought what the hell, I'll buy it and see what happens. It worked quite well for me. Fast forward three years and I found an Si3 with an A-flex shaft that according to what I had read should have given me more distance. Wrong! I kept the stiff shafted TiSi Tec and still use it as a backup driver. That A-flex shafted Si3 sits in my closet gathering dust.
