Hey y'all,

At the beginning of the summer, I set out on a quest to get rid of all of my Rawlings gear and get some real golf clubs and I am now down to getting the 3 wood out of my bag. I've gotten rid of everything and my scorecard is showing the improvement as well. My question is should I get a different 3 wood or put in a hybrid club? I usually use the 3 wood off the tee and I rarely use it from the fairways because I don't trust the one I have now. I have a 5 wood that I absolutely love but I think Nike quit making the Ignite series fairway woods... I'm looking at going to Cobra for a hybrid and I don't know the difference between the DWS and the TWS baffler hybrids. Could someone explain this to me? And what should I get in the way of loft?

Thanks for any and all help guys!

You should have replaced that 5 wood with a hybrid instead of the 3 wood.

if you never hit it off the deck and only use ot for the tee why replace it?

If your driver is unreliable just get a higher lofted driver and go straight into your 18*

I would have if I had been in the game that long. The only reason I bought my 5 wood is because my first one broke... That was a few years ago though. I'm not above swapping out the 5 wood or just getting a hybrid to fit in between the 5 wood and 4 iron... Any suggestions? I can actually hit the 5 wood pretty decently so I really hate to get rid of it.

Judging from your signature, it looks like you may still have a club slot or two available. Why not just add a hybrid to an open slot?

I replaced all my fairway woods with hybrids because I could not hit a fairway wood consistently. It's the best decision I've made in my golfing "career."

I now carry 3 different brands/4 different models of hybrid. The Callaway FT 5H is my go-to club for getting out of rough and making "tricky" shots from bad lies. It's superb at cutting through thick rough and getting the ball into the air. The Nickents and Adams aren't quite as good out of the rough, but I hit them better off the tee and from the fairway.

2 months ago I would have said yes, get a hybrid. But, I absolutely love my new 3 wood off the deck and would never trade it for a hybrid. In fact I'm putting my 4 iron back in the bag and sidelining the 5 hybrid for a while. Hybrids are great out of thicker rough though.

Thanks guys. I am getting more consistent with my driver so I am probably going to phase out the 3 wood I currently have.. I still need to buy some wedges for closer to the green where it would help a lot. I usually don't even need the 3 wood because the 5 wood is so versatile for me... I think the 3 wood can just stay home next time and I will see how that goes. I don't think I've used it the past 3 rounds or so anyway. haha. Thanks again for the help guys!

I did switched my fairway woods to hybrid. But the 18 degree hybrid does not give a longer shot than my 5 Wood. Even though the loft is the same. I don't use 3 wood because it's hard to hit off the fairway. So I keep my 5 wood in the bag.

I hit my 18 degree hybrid only about 185 yards while my 5 wood is almost 200 yards.

I have both a 15* fairway wood and a 15* hybrid, and I swap one out for the other depending on what course I'm playing. The reason for that is I hit the 3 wood a lot better off the tee than I do the hybrid but I hit the hybrid off the fairway better than I do the tee. Between the teo, the wood goes a bit further (265ish vs. 250ish). If I'm playing a course where I'll have chances at going at the green on par 5's (no immediate trouble around the green), I'll carry the hybrid. The course I play at up here in AR has trouble guarding all the par 5's so I never go for any in two.

As for what you are looking for, you really need to look at what you are going to use the club for an not just swap something in because someone on here tells you that you should. If you are only going to use the club once every few months, don't bother changing anything. The only person that's going to know what you need is you.

Oh, and....

Making the same decision right now as well. Just sold my TM Burner 3 wood I did not like and might replace it with a 16 degree hybrid. Or might add another wedge...but I think I will go the hybrid route.

I didn't replace my 3W with a hybrid, but I realized that I can hit my 19* hybrid on tight tee shots just as well as the 3W, and I can hit it off the fairway better than the 3W. The 3W wasn't earning its keep, so out it went.

I also have a 19* hybrid. I love the club and hit it well but my 3 wood is a good 25-30yds longer. I am considering replacing my 4i with either a 3 or 4 hybrid.

Nope I can't hit my 3wood off the fairway. It is a generic walmart piece of crap so I am going to replace it anyway. I use my 5wood and just lay up on par 5s because I don't like the 3wood at all.

Tough call man. I love my 3 wood off the tee but thats it. I have a 2 hyrbid that I can hit great off the tee and off the fairway. I have thought of taking the 3 wood out and putting the hybrid back in to replace it. Yeah not an even swap but an option I have been throwing around.

What hybrid are you looking to replace it with? An also a FW type hybrid or Iron type hyrbid....

I'm looking at the Cobra Baffler hybrids. The DWS or the TWS (by the way what is the difference?). They offer a 17* 2 hybrid so I might look at one of those but I also may just get rid of my 3 wood alltogether. I don't really see much of a need for a 2* difference.... But out of the rough I guess the 2 hybrid may be easier for me to hit than the 5 wood... Very tough call indeed.

Yeah the Cobra hybrids are very nice. They do have 1 iron hybrids out there. I know the Power Play 5000 is an iron type #1 iron hybrid. I think Nickent make a #1 iron hybrid too. I think a 5 wood is easier to hit but a 2 hybrid is easier to control and more versatile for me anyways.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
