Anyways, seems as though NM's linked reference will stand as the winner here.  It specifically lists retreiving the ball as an exception to the rule, so that should be the end of it.  I think ;)

Thanks!

Not a silly question at all. I know the answer to this question very well because someone once tried to call a penalty on me because I took several clubs into a hazard (didn't know what kind of lie I had) and set the clubs I didn't need on the ground next to me. Not a penalty!

Really?!

Didn't know that! That may be one of the most inadvertently violated violated rules in the book!

Edited to add that I just read NM.Golf's response. Thank goodness!

Since I moved it to the correct forum, can it be minus two strokes for me?

I only read the first sentence in your post and replied to that, so my error.  You asked about grounding, and that is not allowed.  You are allowed to probe for the ball as long as nothing is done to test the condition.

Yeah, this is why I originally asked, because I thought ... "shoot, this is something everybody does all the time ... could it actually be illegal?!?"

Luckily not!

Actually, I don't really care about my penalty anymore.  I'm not playing in a tournament right now and since I keep hitting it into the hazard anyway, I've already reached my ESC so ...

on to the next hole!
