Hey guys, This is my second year of golfing regularly, and I am planning on joining my high school team this fall. I was wondering how the scoring worked in a match between schools. Are you responsible for your own scorecard or for your opponents card? I know it may be different in different areas, but I was just wondering. This will be my first year of competitive golf so if you guys have any tips for me they would be greatloy appreciated. I'm still not that great, but am improving fast and hope to continue to improve my game.

Ok, the thing that you will want to know is that Varsity Golf teams operate on a system of 1-6 as far as ranking of players. Each team needs atleast 4 guys, but most have 6. The 1-6 is player position. I played last year with a handicap probably around 25.0 and played 6th man. This year my handicap is 18 and I plan on playing 4th or 5th. Basically, the scoring works the same as it would if you played with someone else as a normal round. You keep your score and the person you are paired with (by "paired with" I mean the 6th (or whatever position you end up being) man from the other team. You also play with the man either one position above or below you, depending on your position.) Idk if it will be exactly the same where you are, but here you need to shoot five qualifying rounds by the end of the regular season to go to sectionals and so on. A "qualifyer" is a round of +8 or better, which at my course, front nine, is a 45, back nine 42. PM me if you have any more questions, as I would be happy to answer any ?'s that you have.

If I ever get happy with myself for finishing 12th or 15th, someone needs to put my clubs away and I'll take up tiddlywinks.

As with most official competitions, you keep your opponents official scorecard. However, you should also keep your own score at the bottom of your opponents card for verification after the round.

Where I grew up, each team had 6 players and the 4 best scores of those counted each day.
