How much are you thinking of cutting it down? Depending on how much you take off it might affect the swing weight beyond the point where it can be corrected with the weights and make the shaft stiffer. Given your swing speed I'm not sure this is a good idea for you. Try hitting it for a few rounds and see how it does for you and then consult a golf professional. You might otherwise end up ruinining a driver that's already one of the best on the market.

Definitely see what your local pro thinks. There are plenty of juniors at my club who have shorter drivers - it just makes sense for shorter players.

What I Play:

I don't think cutting the shaft down can 'ruin' a driver. You can reshaft it. Smashing it against a wall might ruin it though.

I would go to the range with it and see how it goes. Mess with your grip position, up and down on the grip. If you feel more confident with your hands down lower, then you most likely need it cut. Or you can play with your hands down on the grip and grow into it.

I'm 5'6" and use a standard length driver, although the Taylormade is 1/2" longer than mine stock. I cut down my last driver by 1" and it wreaked havoc with the swingweight, so I swapped back to the long shaft, and just choked down on the club with much better results.

I have a friend who stands about 5' 5"........he discovered that he could hit the TM 425 farther than the newer 460's.

The clubhead was a bit smaller and came around better.

Choking down on the club affects the swing weight just like cutting down the club does. You could have put on a winn ultralight grip to get your sw back to stock.

My opinion, no. Either choke down a bit if it is too long or find somewhere to get fit and find a shaft that will work with your swing and size.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I went into Edwin Watts today with that same question. I bought a new Taylormade 09 Burner and I am having to choke down about 1" to 1.5". I asked since I am choking down should I just go ahead and have the shaft cut down. The salesman there said it would affect the swing weight of the club and also being that it is a stiff shaft, it would make it even more stiff which could affect the overall hitting of the club. His advice to me was to continue choking down on the grip, He also suggested to try a midsize grip (.600). I just installed a Winnlite firm, so we'll see how this works out.

Yeah, best thing to have done would have been to custom order it so you could get the length that you wanted. Most clubs today are way to long. I'm 6'2'' and use a 44.5 inch driver. Many of the newer drivers have 45, 45.5 or een 46'' shafts in them which is ridiculous.

I disagree. Sure you can get it re-shafted but again we're talking about significantly altering the characteristics of a new golf club. When you alter it to the point that it needs a new shaft to get it back to its original characteristics you have ruined it, something I don't believe the OP wants to do.

Nonsense ...... if you grip down 1 inch on a club the

actual swingweight will be lowered to the same amount as cutting down the shaft by 1 inch. (only the swingweight of the club will be lighter) ...... the only thing is that cutting down a shaft is period.

Apart from the fact that I disagree, that most shafts are toooo long, they today fit me perfect (I'm 6'10").

Yesterday a driver had a sweetspot of about a dime orso, and if you struck the ball a tiny bit off the sweetspot ..... you had a poor result, today the actual sweetspot is still about the same size, but missing it a bit you still have a great result, even if you miss it more than a bit, the result is still a sound shot. So with todays drivers 46 inch shafts are no problem at all, not even for Joe the Average golfer.

Then how come you hit your hybrid off the tee?

First it is called "gripping down" ...... if you grip down 1.5" on a driver you are allready changing the actual swingweight. I don't understand why sales clerks at those shops keep telling this nonsense (it is just physics) ...... of course if you cut down a shaft bij the same 1.5" the club swingweight will be lowered about 3 points (so from let's say d2 to c8), but if you grip down 1.5" you will be swinging a club with the same lowered swingweight...... !

On the other side putting a midsize grip (which is heavier than a standard grip) to compensate diameter a little for gripping down, is already changing the swingweight of the club ! I feel it is important to think for your self, than believe to sales talk of the average sales clerk. (they always use the same ball you want to buy or the always seem to use the same driver you think of buying, etc.....)

Then how come you hit your hybrid off the tee?

I use the 16* Hybrid (which in this case is more like a 1i) only on the long par 5's that are not reachable in two or at short and narrow par 4's, where I prefer to hit a full wedge to the green above a 5/8 sandwedge....... scoring in golf has little to do with trying to hit a 300+ drive at all holes ...... "keep calm and carry on" !

If you need any more persuading, the two kids at my club who have had their drivers shortened have a dad who is a pro. He has played on the European tour. He cut them down himself - and i think he knows what he is talking about when it comes to golf. If your local pro somehow says you should keep the length as standard, he just doesn't know what he is talking about.

Well first let me start off by thanking you for correcting me. I always appreciate when someone smarter than me corrects me. I didn't know how much being "politically" correct on this forum was until now. As far as for the guys that work in the golf shops, I would like to think some of them know what they are talking about. But now I know I can come here and consult with you. So as far as golf clubs and physics are concerned I will come to you for the answers for now on. Noted I also said that I installed a winn lite grip which weighs about 28 grams, (which is lighter than most standard grips). Will this work? Not sure, but I am willing to hear advice and give it a try. So to the OP, this was just an opinionated suggestion.
