Had lil issue in today's round, I played alone and came up on a 4some on par 3.They hit their tee shots then said I could play through, cool.
We'll I duffed my tee shot into the water.
Instead of going 30 yards to the drop zone and causing them to wait longer, I just hit from the tee, stuck it close and putted out for bogey. As I was walking off the green, 1 of the guys in the 4some (club member I think) said I should have dropped in the drop zone, I said I simply didn't want to delay them any more by walking to the drop zone, hitting and walking back.I even said I took my stroke penalty if it made him feel better lol and I kept on with my round.

So was I wrong to hit from the tee or should I have delayed them and gone to the drop zone?
I thought I was being considerate since they let me play through. It bugged me the rest of my round though.
Thoughts?

Not a rules-master here, but here's what the rulebook says (from http://www.usga.org/bookrule.aspx?id=14304):

If a ball is in a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in a water hazard (whether the ball lies in water or not), the player may under penalty of one stroke:

a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or

b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or

c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

So, you were probably in the right.. I'll leave it up to the other rules-pros here to tell you for sure.

I think he just thought you didnt know the rule and was telling you of it. I would have played the same way.

Never heard of a case where you were not allowed to play again from the same spot. Establishing a dropping zone is a convenience, it should never be a requirement to use it if one of the other options under rules 26-1 is preferable.

I see why you did what you did and it was within the rules but when playing through you should play the hole like any other. I'd have dropped in the zone.

Hmm... I don't think you have to take the drop zone.. By the rules it looks like you are good

Depending on where the drop zone is, I could have done the same myself. No rule broken, that is for sure. You always got the option of hitting a new ball from as close as possible to the original place of where you hit the last shot.

Good, I didn't think I had broken any rules and glad to see I'm not alone in how I played it or would play it.

I don't get it. You took an option that is available in the rules. Was he trying to tell you that there is a drop zone on this hole for future reference? If I'm not in any real competition, I probably would have re-teed as well, because I want to hit the shot I know I'm capable of (especially if the drop zone isn't THAT much of a help).

Cant remember the name of that movie but ummm,,

After hitting a 3wood that bounced into the water the antogonist in the story continued to hit shot after shot from that very same spot. Which was allowed by the official rules as stated in the movie. Even though everyone kept telling him to go use the drop he just wanted to prove he could do it. I dont see a problem with that.

No problem with what you did. I think he just wanted to let you know there was a drop zone. I wouldn't worry about it

Good, I didn't think I had broken any rules and glad to see I'm not alone in how I played it or would play it.

Given that you were playing on your own, I don't think the rules come into into, given that you aren't playing in a comp and can't submit a card that you've marked yourself, anyway. Do what you like in a practice round. I think the fellow in question was just letting you know that you should have used the drop zone, which is there for a reason.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

sometimes it's actually a better move to replay your last shot instead of going to the drop zone. You already hit the shot so you know what was wrong, and usually you hit the shot great the second time around. It is also completely within the rules to replay the last shot for penalty strokes, always an option. That guy probably wanted to be a golf know-it-all. Sometimes people are better off not saying anything. You were completely right.

I believe I've seen a course around here that states in the local rules that you're supposed to use the drop zone if you hit in to the water/etc off the tee on a particular hole. I think it's just to keep people from hitting shot after shot on a tough forced carry and slowing everything down. Personally, I think it's lame, but perhaps that's the rule there?

What's up, Tazz?? Where were you playing?

That guy sounds like an A-hole, to me...even though they were letting you play through.

Most people I play with would've hit the drop zone, including me....but if you saved a bogey out of it...what does he care?

Hitting from the tee again is neither a rules issue nor an etiquette issue. Telling people what they should have done after they're finished playing through is a self-esteem issue.

Not turning in a scorecard just because it wasn't attested is a potential sandbagging issue.
