My good friend is really having trouble with his golf game. His golf swing is totally in shambles. He continues to get frustrated and chucking clubs. He has 2 broken clubs to his name. He racks up more thrown clubs than pars. He basically lives on the golf course though because he lives really close to the course where we are members are. His choice of words after he hits a bad shot are... well questionable. He cant hit a tee shot to save his life. He doesnt even bring his driver anymore because he cant hit it. He mostly used his nike suma hybrid until he chucked it halfway across the course and broke. Lately hes used his 5 iron off the tee and it just duck hooks and goes about 150 max. His iron shots... well i wouldnt even call them shots since they go 20 yards like an old lady golfer. No offense Grandma. And dont even get me started on his grip. He holds it like a freakin baseball bat. His swing is lightning quick. The only thing going for him is his potential and his love for the game. And his short game is amazing and gets up and down consistently. Last week he was breaking 90 consistently and he entered a tournament and was for sure going out for the team. But today we golfed and if he took legit score, theres no doubt he would have been well over 120 and was talking about withdrawing from the tourny and not trying out. Also it even got worse since he took a tumble out of our cart.

Sorry for such a long entry but I really want to know how i can help him stay positive and how to help him with his swing. He has also built a fort on the course. Please help.

Have him get at least one lesson that way he can feel the motions of a proper swing, it should help him right away.If he is against it, since he is your good friend maybe suggest a duo lesson, as you too can learn new things and yet he wont be offended.

By reminding him there are far more important things then golf, and to remind him that everyone goes through rough stages of their game.

I know a guy who threw a club into the cart. The then broken club ricocheted off the cart and sliced into his ear. He soaked his towel in blood and temporarily lost his hearing in that ear. Good times.

Throwing clubs shows character.

First of all, NOBODY wants to play with someone who throws clubs. Remind him of that, tough love.

He should get a lesson to help his game.

Suggest tennis...

I don't think he needs you to tell him he is miserable but when it gets to the point where one has lost all emotional control on the course then you really have bigger issues than golf to worry about. I can't see any coach on any team putting up with this kind of behavior so you need to be frank with him and tell him to get some lessons or that you will no longer be playing with him.

Xanax and lessons.

Or... offer to go golfing with him and a video camera, partly to capture his swing for analysis, but then you can capture all the bad behavior, too.
He's completely succumbed to his frustration. His expectations for his game are far removed from reality and he needs to do something to break the cycle of frustration he's in. Maybe seeing himself on the course will snap him out of the spiral he's in so he can take a step back and get some perspective.

He's probably got other stuff going on in his life that he is keeping bottled up and when something goes wrong in golf he overreacts because all that anger is in him. Maybe try meditating, it didn't work for me but it does for some people. I don't think golf is the problem.

Thanks guys for the replies. I'll talk to him about his behavior. I have to admit some of the things he does is pretty funny.

Lol he fell out of the cart?

Hahaha yes he took a tumble and it was freakin hilarious! He was reaching down to get a ball and I accidently turned a little fast and i was going full speed and he just hit the dirt haha.

Tell him he's not good enough to get angry.

My thoughts exactly. I don't mind playing with anyone, from + HC to triple digits player, as long as they don't pout about their shots as if they're really 25 shots better than they are and God has damned them to suddenly shooting triple digits instead of par, or 80s instead of pro-style 62 on the local muni.

Though I admit I've struggled against internal frustration. I never yell or throw clubs or anything cause I don't want to ruin the round for the rest of my group, but the sour, frustrated attitude makes it less fun for everyone anyway. I've gotten much much better at this largely through the help of my best golf buddy, who consistently would point out that getting angry only made my game worse and the round less fun for both of us. He'd also note that beating that problem would also help solve my other main mental problem, which is feeling the stress and tensing up starting on hole 14 or 15 if I was having a good day and threatening to beat my personal best. I'd say that yes, if his swing is very unsound you could recommend some lessons, but I think just having a friend remind you consistently that you're supposed to be having fun and the sour attitude only compounds the problem can be very helpful.

Try to make him madder and see how far you can push him..... Seriously, I gave my brother the Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" by Ben Hogan. It can help anyone who wants it. Although I would have more fun pushing him to his breaking point. I suggest you tell him what others have said, be pissed if you are a pro. Being an idiot on the course is not cool.

You know I'm not so sure about that. One of my buddies has some pretty epic meltdowns, of course it comes at the price of seeing the rest of us in tears of laughter. He once had to call "fore" for a THROWN CLUB, because it stuck in his hands and went straight left of his intended target. He also threw a wedge off a canyon cliff once, it must have sailed 100 yards. We all had swollen faces from laughing so hard.

That's pretty much the unwritten rule in our group, you have a meltdown, you get laughed at and embarrassed even more.

    • We do not buy extended warranties. We will use one of our credit cards for the purchase that extends the warranty "x 2". Our thoughts are: a. if the item is a lemon, it will likely break right away and we can attempt to apply the original warranty or credit card extension. b. over the long haul, we will probably save more money by not purchasing the extended warranty and fixing/junking broken items out of our own pocket. The important thing is to keep some records of purchases so one may make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty. I recently sent back some Footjoy shoes for leaking and Footjoy did a reat job of making the claim process work very well. I had the original receipt, warrant info and box. Easy peasy.
