Sunday I walked off the course after 9 holes. (twilight rate $23 and playing as a single)

Two weeks ago after a stretch of sub 80s golf and a sub par round I started to develop a *&&^%> nasty hook. After a few driving range sessions I figured the demon was ousted.

First couple of holes results were OK. Then next couple I had trouble keeping the ball in bounds.
The final two whole were pure torture. 65 to 75 yard hooks with hybrids. The wedges were not better. Just did not have to walk as far to find the ball.

What was odd was the middle holes. After a long but slightly pushed drive I was in a fairway trap 195 yards from the pin with a large oak tree about 75 yards in front of me. The 24* hybrid shot is pin seeking and stays put for easy 6 foot birdie putt. Well OK maybe things look better.

Next hole I hit a 8 iron from 155 out. The ball lands short of the pin and drifts left toward the pin. I bag my club and start walking thinking two birds in a row. Kool. As I look at the green--- no ball is to be seen. Yep a 155 yard hole out for eagle. The cure is in place.

Par 3 up and nice 9 iron sets up birdie. 4 under in three holes. Good golf is back.

Then very bad golf occurs for the next two holes. Some of the most frustrating golf I've played this summer. I felt it was just a victory to hit the ball.

This game of golf both is glorious and sucks big time.

Back to the range for Daniel.

It's funny, I was just about to start a thread about my hybrids and how I've been hooking the hell out of them too. I don't understand it. They used to be my go to clubs, now I can't hit them straight to save my life.

I have had some problems hooking the hybrids. Difficult to find Hybrids that don't have a somewhat closed face.

I don't like hybrids at all for that reason - I hit a draw as it is - if you get too quick with a hybrid, you just hit a sailing hook 30-40yds offline, whereas with a 2-iron, you keep the ball lower and give it less spin, so it's less apt to go astray. However, a hybrid is a lot easier to hit than a 2I.

It sucks, but if I were your dad, I would have a few words about sticking it out and playing all 18 holes, just my 2 cents, my son did that one time while we were playing and he will never do that again.

It honestly kills me that people get so frustrated over a game that means nothing. Unless you are making a living playing golf no one should be so upset over a bad round or even a bad series of rounds. Look at every professional athlete out there no matter what sport, they all go through bad times and they practice more than we all could imagine. I am a fierce competitor, always have been and I have been working at improving my game a lot lately but I know that it will never be perfect because I don't have 40+ hours a week to devote to golf. I just enjoy the time I do have out on the course and try and improve as much as I can.

I don't like posting any negative reply, but I gotta say this post was a bad one. Honestly, why would you go and post how you quit on your round cause your game went sour? It's not something to be proud of. This game is about recovery, and you just announced to everyone here that you'd rather quit the game then to suffer a bad round. Just enjoy the game.

Oh, and your hook, you probably got excited about your multiple birdies and your arms got tight.

I am one of those who gets extremely frustrated, while at the same time i know i will never make money on golf and know that i should'nt make such a fuzz when having a terrible couple of holes. As you say its a game that really means nothing.

I myself cannot for the life of me convince myself it doesnt matter, although i give it my best shot. I just hate not getting the round done properly. At the same time i believe that this is more complex than hobby vs job, and personality comes heavily into play.

Maybe because when you play like crap it's NOT fun? Doesn't matter if you're making a living doing it or not. There's nothing wrong with getting a little frustrated when you're playing bad. It's all in how you display that frustration. If it gets to the point where you're throwing clubs and that kinda crap then yea, you have a right to tell people they shouldn't be doing that. But I just frustrated after hitting bad shot after bad shot... don't tell me I'm not allowed just because I'm not a professional. It's called people react to things differently from everyone else, accept that some people are different than you.

Guess I need to further explain where I was at. Last two weeks I've had a problem with a serious hook working into my game making a round of 18 unplayable. If I would complete the round it would be at the expense of a couple a dozen balls. I've been at the range and for this outing (by myself) this was the test to see if indeed I had SOLVED the issue.

The round had proved the cure was incomplete. The flashes of my GOOD game were mixed in with the broken part. The round was simply a practice round to confirm the progress of my swing adjustments. When it became evident the progress was insufficient I decided to go back the the range and make adjustments rather than 1) try to fix my swing during a round or 2) ingraining the faulty swing any further. I find adjusting swing faults during a round leads to analysis paralysis and my game degrades even further.

So think of this twilight round simply as the practice rounds pros play before a tourney. Informal and in no way impeding other golfers. The cart girl informed me I was the only golfer on that nine. The purpose of the post was to display how fragile a swing can be for us amateurs. -4 for 3 holes to horrible within a moment later.

If indeed i was with golfing partners i would have stuck it out, and perhaps adjusted to a "safe 3/4 swing " to finish out.

BTW I went to the range a day later to find the adjustment. A simple change in grip freed up my wrist cock. Played 9 holes (at a 9 hole course this evening) as all seems to be well. Three weeks of fiddling to simply discover my thumbs had crept up to the top of the shaft locking my wrists. So subtle yet pervasive.

All about participation ?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I used to be one of those club-throwing, club-slamming and cursing after a bad shot player for a while. Then, one day, a good friend of mine said to me, "You're a sh*tty golfer, why are you surprised when you hit a bad shot?".

Now, when I hit a bad shot, I just look at my bud and say, "I know, I know; I'm sh*tty." and we laugh about it.

I think frustration is one thing but walking off the course is another. I've played two rounds with a guy I work with who does that. Hell, I've seen him leave after 15 - what's the point??

As far as the swing issues, I'm in the same boat with my hybrids. I'm always battling a hook with them and what irritates me is up until this week, I actually found a smooth swing with my 3hy and it was my most confident club in the bag. My round Wednesday, I topped my tee shot off #1, topped the second shot, and I never did hit a good shot that day with them. Like you, I'm sure it is a grip problem as I just don't feel right at address.

haha, well knowing a couple of those type of golfers myself, I know it would take some serious balls to say that to them during a round.
