I'm in the market for new irons as I just can't hit my MP33's the way I used to since I don't get out to play all the time after college. I went to Golf Galaxy last night and learned about their fitting program where you hit 8 or so different sets of clubs "blind" in your price range to get a sense of feel, then hit the ones with the best feel on the simulator. I went in right before they closed so I didn't have time to do it last night. I'll be going back in tonight and was wondering if anyone else had done this and if you walked out with the irons that you thought you would buy. The guy I talked with was very helpful and turned on his inner "salesman" and told all of the stories of people who came in to buy the $1,200 set but walked out with the $400 set because they felt better. Any feedback or tips you have for my search are appreciated. Thanks!

I'm looking in the <$600 range and right now have my eye on the Taylor Made Tour Burners. I guess we'll see if they win.

What is the charge? Besides letting you hit clubs, can you mess with swing weight and stuff usually not addressed at the retail level?

Sounsd about right... why buy expensive clubs when you can test them out and like cheaper ones better?

Golf Galaxy itself has a great fitting program though. Got all my stuff fitted there and will continue to do so. Around the $600 range, you have a huge selection. A lot of irons are starting to go on sale right so you'll have a good selection to choose from.

I got my Burner '09 irons from GolfGalaxy. I bet I spent upwards of 4 hours total in the simulator hitting different clubs before buying. I had a price point in mind and let the staff use their judgement to bring me others (above & below the price I had set).

Helps that they're not on commission. Not sure if they have bonuses based on particular clubs/brands, but at no point did I ever feel I was being steered in a particular direction.

FWIW, make sure you want a "game improvement" iron if you buy the Burners. I thought I liked the high long flight of them, but after realizing I was trying to drop the ball in an area as opposed to a specific point, I traded mine in for some used Ping I10's, which I like 1000 times better.

Agree with motteler. When I got fitted recently the sales associate was wanting me to hit certain clubs he thought would be good with my swing and I did NOT like them at all, then I said if I could hit the ones I wanted to look into and sure enough I bought them after hitting 3 shots with them. They were that good for ME.

yea, take my dad for example. He went into a golf store and told them he was a high handicapper prolly like a 25 and they gave him the biggest game improvement irons and sent him on his way. After playing with them he hates them and honestly I think he would probably hit a blade better than those, lol but really though they are just trying to do their job.

Good tips. I went to do the fitting tonight, but GG was having a Hooters night with free wings and drawings and stuff so the store was packed and the lines for the hitting areas were 10 deep. I didn't want to wait that long. I have a list of irons that I want to hit, but wouldn't mind hitting others that I might not have thought of. Right now I'm looking at the TM Tour Burners, Calaway X-22s, Cleveland CG7 and Ping G10's. I'll fill in how it all goes tomorrow.

Exactly. Far too many fittings are based on handicap. There are some companies that I avoid at demo days because their first question is about my handicap, not about what I want out of my irons. Plenty of mid handicappers play players' irons just fine, and there are TOUR players with game improvement irons in the bag. There are so many factors beyond handicap.

Hitting blind in your price range ignores a host of other factors. You can have a friend simulate this if you want, by having you narrow down some choices and he hands you them without telling you what each is. You don't need to pay for the service (other than treating your friend to a burger or something).

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Hit a few irons at GG this afternoon. I hit the TM Tour Burner, Mizuno MP 52s and the Callaway X22 tours. The X22 tours were by far my favorite. Ball striking and flight path were much more consistent and I love the look and feel. the 52's just didn't feel right and I kept hitting the burners way high. Never thought I'd play callaway's, but it looks like I'm heading in that direction.

If you were higher handicap, hadn't kept up on equipment, or bought clubs in a very long time, like 10 years, then you might need more help. Almost single digit and young you probably don't need as much game improvement as we greybeards, especially those not willing to keep up on equipment trends.

Double Aces: Did you get a chance to hit the Cleveland CG7's? I went in thinking I was going to buy Callaway and really liked the Clevelands. Ended up buying them and I am REALLY glad i did. Just thought i would give you a little heads up incase you didnt get a chance to hit them.

That 'blind' testing sounds interesting.
I'd be interested in knowing what I'd choose.
I think it's gonna be the Callaway Diablo forged irons.
Man, do they feel great but can't get past the ugliness and the pricetag.

Seeing as your location says you are from Cypress, I'm assuming the Golf Galaxy you went to was the 249/1960 location across from Willowbrook Mall. I went into that location a couple years ago to look at a new driver, and after talking to the salesman for a few minutes I looked around for a bit and then left. He had absolutely no clue what he was talking about and was more concerned with putting me in the "lastest and greatest club" that I knew for a fact wouldn't fit me instead of trying to figure out what I needed. I went down the street to Edwin Watts (a mile or so east on 1960 just after Cutten Rd. across form Target), and they couldn't have been more helpful. I'd recommend checking that place out.

If you go to buy a set of clubs at Golf Galaxy and know that you will need shortened shafts can they order the set so it doesnt cost you extra over the normal sales price ?
Reason I ask is I always have to get my clubs cut down about an inch. Then to have them cut down and re-gripped costs approx $12-15 depending on the grip. So I have well over $100 into getting my irons cut down. I'd rather just pay for shorter length clubs from the factory but don't know how to go about it. Only place I see online that will shorten clubs to your specs is gigagolf.com

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
