I just purchased a Callaway FT-5 draw driver in a 10.5 I was told by the range pro at my local course it was one of the drivers I should look into in my price range. So I bought a used 1 in very good condition from Golfetail.com for less than $60 I am sure I didn't get hurt on the price. But I am kinda uneasy about buying a club I have never hit. Your thoughts?

Well, it's not exactly the right way to do it, but I do the same thing pretty regularly. I mean, that FT-5 was probably $399 or something like that when it was released a couple of years ago. You're getting it for $60. I've recently traded in some clubs and bought Callaway FT-IQ, Adams Speedline 9032LS, and Mizuno MX-700 drivers from globalgolf in very good condition. The three clubs cost me nothing due to the trades, but they would have cost about $80-$90 apiece or so. So I got three fantastic drivers, and at these prices, it is pretty easy to trade in, or sell, and recoup most or all of my money. And I get to try the clubs on my own time, at a range, on a course, etc.

The FT-5 is supposed to be a good driver--whether it's the one for you, you'll see. But at $60, I'd say the risk is pretty low.

Equipment:
Ping K15 Driver (10.5º) - Diamana BB R flex; Ping G15 4 Wood (TFC R flex); Ping G15 20* Hybrid (TFC R flex); Ping G15 23* and 27* Hybrids (AWT R flex steel); Ping G15 Irons 6-GW (AWT R flex steel); Ping I-Wedge 54* Wedge; CG14 BP 58* Wedge; Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs #9 Putter

I had the 07 Burner and the Cobra LD, I can honestly say the FT5 draw is my favorite out of the 3. Maybe not as forgiving but definitely longer. I have the Aldila DVS shaft on it which was exactly what I was looking for. For $60 you cant lose and you can always resell it if you dont like it. Im sticking with this driver for at least the next couple years. I really dont think you'll be disappointed and if you dont like it I'd be willing to trade you my Cobra LD so I can have a backup. What kind of shaft did you end up getting with it?

I would say you probably want to have hit the TYPE of driver before, just to be sure you like the feel, but I personally wouldn't worry about sample-to-sample variance too much. I bought irons based on having hit a different set (with stiff shafts, actually) and couldn't be happier with the outcome.

Since you've already bought it, I wouldn't sweat it. Unless you're really familiar with a different driver, I would think you can adapt to it fairly easily. Plus the worst that happens is you decide that it was a terrible fit for you and you're out $60. Hardly worth losing too much sleep over.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

I played the FT-5 draw for about 2 years and it was a good driver. Definitely louder than the new drivers. After some lessons and improving my swing, it became a happy hooker with the draw bias so I switched to a neutral driver. If you have issues with a slice or push, it'll help you out.
In my Callaway Warbird stand bag:
Ping G15 10.5* Graphite Design YS-6+ S
Ping G15 4W 17* Aldila Serrano S
Adams IDEA A7 19* UST Mamiya AXIVcore S
TM 2009 Burners 4-PW / Titleist SM Vokeys 50, 56 & 62 / TM Rossa Daytona 1 Ghost / Titleist Pro V1
