Hey everyone well I have been taking lessons for the past couple months and have been hitting the ball more solid than ever. Now I need help completing my bag any suggestions on what I should remove or replace would be appreciated......~Chris

In my bag:

Driver: Callaway Diablo Edge
Irons: Callaway X-22 3-AW (9 clubs)
Hybrid: Nickent 5dx "4" hybrid
Wedges: 54* and 58* cg15
Putter: Oddyssey Teron

I don't have any fairway woods, and I have been pretty efficient with my hybrid.....should I drop the 3 and 4 iron and replace them with something else? What does everyone suggest? thanks for any help~Chris

My set up is:
Driver, 3w, 3h, 4h, 5-PW, GW, SW, LW, Putter.

If I was you I'd get a 3w and a 3h and drop the 3 and 4 irons.

The best I can do is give you my bag and tell you how I feel about bag set-ups.

F: Titleist 906F 19*
i: PING i3 3-PW
W: PING i3 UW, Cleveland 588 54*
P: Ping iWi D66

I think if there is any overrated club in existence it is the fairway wood. In my opinion, you're not going to score with a FW and you'll almost never hit a green with a FW...so put ONLY one in your bag (or a hybrid, etc) for when you can't reach the green and save room in your bag for wedges. Short game is 60-75% of your strokes. Make those strokes as easy and flexible as possible. It seems that you already have a bag set up like this...I'm not sure what you need to add.

EDIT: Keep in mind when all of you are replacing your 3 and 4 irons with hybrids, you should consider that you can't put backspin on the ball with a hybrid.

I agree with this, one FW is all you need. I keep the 3h and 4h instead of my long irons just because I find them easier to hit. I never was too good with my long irons and was never really able to but backspin on the ball with them anyways.

You don't need 3,4 irons and AW (GAP wedge). Take them out and replace them with a 18* degree hybrid. It can be usefull for long par 5 and tight fairways.

thanks everyone for the replies! I actually use my hybrid for when I am struggling with my driver which is very often. I will look into getting a 3h, and maybe a 3 wood? and dropping the 3 and 4 irons.......any suggestiong on good woods or another hybrid.....i absolutly love my nickent 5dx.......but would go with something else that you guys would suggest :)

If you like the Nickent hybrid, I would go with that for a 3h as well... Both of my hybrids are the same model, it gives me that much more confidence knowing that they'll play very similar to one another.

So what do you suggest for the fairway wood? Brand/loft etc.

I'd go with a 3 or 4 wood. You're already using Callaway Diablos and I like their fairway woods so that would likely be my choice although I also have a Ping 12* strong 3 that I bring out every now and again. Personally I think fairway woods get a bad rap from people who can't hit them. I have 2 fairway woods (3 & 5) in my bag and I keep them there because I haven't yet found a hybrid I can hit as far or as accurately. I suggest trying both FWs and hybrids and going with whatever works best for you.
My Implements of Destruction (carried in a Hoofer Lite bag):

FAIRWAY WOODS: G2 14 degree 3 wood & 17 degree 5 wood
IRONS: S59 3-PWWEDGES: M/B 54, 58, & 60 degree PUTTER: I Series Anser 4 (or G5i Anser, Anser 2F, or original...

Thanks sam. So if I were to go with a fw what would you suggest if I have a 3 and 4h?

Try a whole bunch out, I've had ones I really liked and ones that I hated... right now mine matches my driver, but that isn't necessary. However I've heard really good things about the Diablo FW, and so if you like that driver it may be a good place to start.. Just go to Golfsmith or somewhere like that and hit everything you can.

Lol unfortunately I don't have anywhere near me where I can test them. So what would you suggest if I went with the diablo fw 3 or 4 or 5?

All I can tell you is what I have and that is a 3w... a 4w may not be a bad idea but probably harder to find. A 5w and a 3h are gonna be too close to each other.

Also, considering you say that you're not going to be able to test different ones out, try to buy from a place that gives you some sort of money back guarantee or something so that if you don't like what you get you can trade it back until you do find what is right for your bag.

4 woods are becoming more common lately. I have a G10 4, 17° and I love it. It is probably my favorite club in my bag to hit full swing. I get 235 teed and 225 from the deck. I dunno what kind of yardage you need between your driver and your 3 iron but G10 woods are a joy to hit. I would say the G15s probably are too.

Check out the Ping G15 4W... easy to hit off the fairway. I also switched from Nickent to Adams A7 idea 3 hybrid w/ UST mamiya shaft... bad a$$.

Your wedge set up is a bit uneven in gaps .... PW 45* - AW 51* - SW 54* - LW 58* .... you might consider to replace the AW or easier to have it bent 49* or 50*.

You at this moment don't need the 3 iron, but it might become a great club when your ballstriking improves, many golfers rule out the 3 and even 4 iron, but they can be very useful ........ anyway you'll notice that if you take out the 3 and 4 iron, your 5 becomes your longest iron and before you know it suddenly becomes your hardest to hit iron ..... if you can handle a 3 iron or 4 iron at the range ..... the 5 iron will be an easy club !

I think the best club might be something like a 18* 4 or 5 Wood. Great and quite easy to hit about 200-220 yds, so it is great to use from the tee aswell.

I wouldn't suggest a 3W as the 3W is about the hardest club to use from the grass and for most midcappers a 3W is more like a second higher lofted driver.
