I'm playing in the finals of the Golf Assoc. of Michigan Net Team Best Ball and wanted to get your thoughts on something. In years past they have had both men's and women's divisions, but due to not getting many women's teams, they decided to just lump everybody together, which is perfectly fine since it's a handicapped tournament. So I get the email with all the info on the finals and see (as I presume was the case in the qualifiers as well) that men will be playing from ~6800 yards and the women from ~5900 yards.

So here is the question: Since it is a handicapped event and USGA indexes are gender neutral (or am I wrong about that), shouldn't everybody be playing from the same set of tees? I did a quick look at the course handicaps and I would be a 10 from the 6800 yard tees and a 9 from the 5900 yard tees - obviously it would be worth it to give up 1 stroke to gain 1000 yards - not that I would expect them to give me that option LOL

I won't make anything of it, but I'm wondering what people think. It just seems odd since your index is your index.

I'm not sure what you mean by gender neutral, but ratings and slopes for men and women are calculated differently. The same tee will yield a different rating and slope for men and women. The final differentials will be compared the same so playing different tees or the same tees wouldn't ultimately effect the final outcome, but it is customary for women to play shorter tees than men since generally speaking men hit the ball farther than women. Having the women tee off from shorter tees is probably done so that the men and women are playing from tees that provide a similar rating a slope for both sexes.

First, handicaps are NOT gender neutral: a woman and a man, playing from the same tees, shooting the same ESC score, will have different differentials.

However, a mixed-gender handicapped tournament is no different than a mixed-tee tournament: if people within the same flight are playing different tees, there are ways to adjust the handicaps based on course ratings. It's no different if a man and a woman are playing the same tees: her course rating for those tees is different, and you can adjust for it.

You would give up one handicap stroke to the

course rating I would guess the rating from 6800 is 72ish and the rating from 5900 is 67ish (just guessing) so you would give up 6 strokes against someone playing from the back tees. Details here Also, as someone noted, mens and womens slope/rating are different for the same tees.
