It depends on your swing speed. You have to find a store with a simulator, radar or something to record your swing speed.

This may also change depending on what club it is. Graphite, steel, driver, hybrid, 9 iron, Taylormade, Titleist, Cobra, Ping etc. Suffice to say, it is recommended to get yourself fit for the clubs.

How does one know what shaft stiffness they should be using?

Like previously mentioned, its best to get fitted. You will be suprised at how much actaul flexes vary between manufacturers, despite what letter is silk screened onto the shaft.

Stiff, I have to get my driver re shafted, but just haven;t got round to it...maybe this weekend.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes?

Seems like I read a story talking about this the other day. . . . I'm probably way off but it said as a general rule if you hit your 7i 150 everytime you probably need a stiff. But like most have said, way better to get fit and see for sure!!

In my Nike SasQuatch Staff Bag:

Irons: Ping G5 4-P

In a level shot with no wind my 7i goes about 155. I play regular shafts in my irons. Just goes to show that eveybody is different.

I don't buy into those static fitting rules, there are so many factors involved in hitting the ball, using only distance is in my opinion inaccurate. Not to mention that a Stiff shaft is not always a Stiff shaft.

The best way is to find a golf center, shop or something and get some data on it. Bring your own clubs and hit them, then try out various shafts and clubs they have available.

I got measured. I hit my 7 iron 165 with no wind leval ground. 8 goes 150. Clubhead speed with driver is just at 100mph. I use a stiff...driver through wedge. I play a higher ball so i dont need help getting it up. With ping i like their zz65 shaft. Dynamic Gold is also a fav. of mine with its higher flex point.

Not sure how good or bad the scale at Dicks sports is, but I was trying out a 6I and had 76 mph on club, not sure if that is stiff or reg for irons.

Get fitted.. Best/easiest way to figure it out. Swing speed is a general gauge. But tempo is another factor that plays a role in determining shaft flex.

you can tell your self by doing this

-go with what feels right. some people like incredibly stiff shafts in their 3 woods, and like that feel, but may prefer a stiff or regular flex in driver. if it feels good you have a better chance of hitting it well.

if your hooking the ball and it doesnt seem to be a swing issue, get stiffer shafts
-if you slice it, get a weaker shaft!

Of course being fit works well, but this is the easy way to do it with little money spent!

Shaft weight makes a big difference too.
My woods have DG stiff steel shafts. I cant swing fast enough for them really but i like the low ballflight i get from them.

I´ve only been fitted for 1 club so far and that´s my hybrid. I had a 88mph SS and the R flex flew too high.

I want to get my driver adjusted since there´s only 20 yards between my hybrid and it. I´ve just been teeing off with the hybrid for the past few rounds since i prefer being off the fairway. The shaft on my driver is a soft regular, i´m going to get fitted when i have enough money for a new shaft.

My Clubs
Driver - LV4 10* R flex
Wood - sam snead persimmon 2 wood (for windy days)
Hybrid burner tour launch 20* stiff flex.

I know some very good players who

but most of the blades don't come with regular shafts ;)

Ego is hard to overcome. I think this is why most manufacturer's OEM "stiff" shafts tend to play flexier than the stiff shafts direct from a shaft manufacturer (and for example why a shaft manufacturer usually won't list the shaft specs of the "Nike" or "Cobra" version of their brand-name shaft on their websites).

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say: Screw the swing monitors and go out to a good hitting area with different flexes to see what your ball flight/pattern is. Nobody needs to tell you anything once you see for yourself, and that goes double for some computer.

    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
