She had a long wait on a hole and warmed up with a weight on the club. Rules are rules and she is old enough to know the rules, but this is a pretty harsh one. Maybe a one or 2 shot penalty but to be dq'ed is crazy IMO.

Surprising considering she's a tour veteran. Just guessing, one would think she may witnessed something similar in the past with a fellow competitor and the consequences. Rules are Rules (even I knew that one). Julie, next time just grab a couple of clubs at once.

Rules are rules but these penalties are HARSH! How much money is she out because she broke a rule that had no mal intent? DQ'd? Seriously.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

I find it really odd that a pro with as many years of experience as her would just do something like that. Presumably, she has never done this before - so why would she all of a sudden whip out a training aid and start using it on the tee?

I actually don't think the penalty is too harsh. I thought about it for a second but then I started imagining training aid companies sponsoring pros and Rocco warming up on the tee box with a V-Harness, etc, etc. It just got too crazy (in my imagination) so I decided the rule is good as it is.

Possible stupid question here: I know some clubs have adjustable weight options where weight can be added or removed to the individuals needs. Can a pro select one of these clubs as one of their 14, but swing at it's heaviest configuration for warm up purposes and then set at standard weight for use during play?

You can do whatever you want before your round - but you cant change anything after you started playing.

"I had a 30-minute wait and I needed to loosen up," she said. "It had no effect on my game whatsoever, but it is what it is. I'm very disappointed."

Huh - why would you do it in the first place then, if it doesnt affect your game?

a) the club configuration they use to tee off with is the club and configuration they must play throughout the entire round.

b) the weights on those things don't get anywhere near heavy enough to matter for the purpose you've stated.

Figured as much that's why I qualified it as a stupid question. Thanks for taking the time to answer

Stupid ruling. It was clearly not an attempt to modify the club to increase the performance. No one would ever use that weight and hit a ball.

Uhhh, she was penalized for using a training aid on the course, not for "modifying the club to increase the performance."

ok. I have one of those heavy putters. If I put that in the bag for our Can-Am tournament. Big tournament with rounds over 5 hours. Could I use that to loosten up on the course? What about one those Momentus putters?

If it's a legal club, and you count it in your 14, then use you can. If it's a non-conforming club, you cannot have it in your bag. If it's a training aid that's not a club, you probably can carry it in your bag (like many pros do with their alignment sticks) but you shouldn't---no sense risking even the appearance of a violation.

I think it's a little silly you can't put a weight on you club to stay loose. 30 minutes on a tee box in a pro event? That's rough. That being said, the rules are the rules and as long as she has been playing she should know better.

As long as it is in the rules then need to abide by it. I'll draw an analogy with another sport that I coached (soccer). I related a story of another coach violating a rule and some other coaches said it wasn't a big deal. I said to tell me which rules are ok to break so we are all on equal footing.

Yeah if I was playing a normal round and had to wait 30 minutes on a tee. I'd be heading for the clubhouse very quickly.

The ruling on Inkster was fine by me. One question: what if it had been her swinging a club with a headcover? My assumption is that it would be fine, I've never heard a headcover considered a training aid, but would warming up with that between holes be a violation? And then where is the line drawn? If I had secretly stuck a weight inside my headcover and used that a warm up, that has to be violation, right?

Interesting question, jamo. I think it comes down to whether such practice is considered unusual or not, which is one of the unfortunate areas in the Decisions, IMO. Some of them seem a little random, but I think that using a head cover would be ok. Under Decision 14-3/6.5, holding a ball in your hand while making a practice stroke (to assist with alignment or something) is ok, because, "The prohibition in Rule 14-3 against using equipment in an unusual manner applies to strokes that count in the player's score and not to practice swings or practice strokes." Since the head cover is ordinary equipment, I think its use in an unusual manner would be permitted by the same logic. The donut (and similarly, weighted headcovers and alignment rods) are not permitted even for practice because they are "unusual equipment," rather than ordinary equipment used in an unusual manner.

This also answers your question about weighted headcovers---the same Decision that rules the donut to be illegal also rules out weighted headcovers. Since it doesn't ban ordinary headcovers, I believe I'm correct in my assessment.
