Yeah, for the grip. I've almost slipped over a couple of times on mats when wearing normal trainers.

proper footing = important.

though i've practiced before in sneakers, i prefer golf shoes. If I'm golfing on course, I'd be wearing golf shoes so why not replicate the same while practicing>?

Golf shoes 90% of the time. If I am there with the kids (meaning they hit 85-90% of the balls) then I might hit in tennis shoes or even sandals (the ahletic ones), but it's only about 5-10 wedges in that case.

I'll often practice putting and sometimes chips and partial wedges in nub-soled workout shoes. But for full shots, I prefer to have the spikes on.

Focus, connect and follow through!

It depends.
If I'm going to go out a and play a few holes afterwards I'll wear golf shoes.
If I'm just hitting shots at the range I'll wear runners.

I should add that I hate hitting balls off the mat to begin wih. I'm about 6 or 6 1" and apparently have a very wide stance. Hitting driver off the mats sucks, as my right foot is always right on the back edge of the mat, begging me to move it just a little further....

Same theory with sports as anything else (learning to drive, shoot, boat, ride ATV's). Practice with what you'll be using to perform.

Mostly, but sneakers or casual shoes with decent traction won't kill you. Golf course, different story.

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I don't hit off mats.

I don't always wear golf shoes (but when I do I prefer FootJoy). Sometimes wearing tennis shoes a very good lesson in balance of the golf swing.

If I'm wearing sneakers I usually just keep 'em on. If I have dress shoes I'll change into the golf shoes I keep in the trunk. And about 1/2 the time I go barefoot - really helps with balance.

PS, I love the comments from those who say "I don't hit off mats". Consider yourself lucky to have that option; it doesn't exist in many places like here.

You kinda sounded like the guy from the dos XX commercial.

To bad Dos XX is swill. I have it on good authority that for the first three takes, the actor said... "I don't always drink beer. But when I do, I prefer to use Dos XX to shampoo my dog." The entire set crew had to take five while he worked it out.

I wear golf shoes. I reminded myself of why back in February, when I wore normal walking shoes to a golf show and tried swinging a driver off a mat. Damn if I didn't fall over a few times and miss the ball plenty. I looked pretty stupid. And it was at a Bridgestone Challenge, so tons of folks were lined up to see it!

I almost never wear them at any range. Don't where them on the course occasionally either. A little slippage from time to time reminds me to stay in control and not over swing.
