Golf Ball hitting steel at 150 mph

1. I thought golfers and non golfers would be interested in seeing this. No one has a swing speed of 150 mph, including Tiger Woods, who is just under 130 mph. I had no idea the golf ball compresses this much. But first a little history I recently learned; The Pro V-1 golf ball by Titlist is actually a three part ball, but you have to have a club head speed of at least 100 mph or more to be able to compress all three stages. If you don't, the ball never fully compresses and you don't get the distance out of it that the pros do.

2. We will get more distance out of a ball that only has two stages of compression... like the Titlist NG Tour. It is more suited to our swing speed and we can compress it upon impact and can hit it further than the Pro V-1 ball.

3. So the secret is not to buy the most expensive balls out there because we are actually decreasing the distance we can hit the ball, unless your club head speed is over 100 mph, which unless you are 21 to 50 years old, isn't going to happen!

Watch this video, this shows what a golf ball goes through when hit at 150 mph... it's pretty amazing to me how long these balls last. Maybe that's why the Pro's use new balls ever time they play.

I'm sure it has more to do with smash factor and as a result ball speed, to get the ball to compress.

seen this video before though. heard it was fake

You do realize a lot of under 21 year olds have a lot of club head speed. Also I know quite a few guys that swing 100+ and are 50+.

Yes - I also know some younger players 16-18 range than can whip the stick pretty damn fast. Don't have proof, but I would put money on it that they are at 100 or more.

Also (just me thinking) I don't see why 21 is an age quoted (or 50 for that matter) as golf swings are not about pure muscular strength or body weight; more about how you create that lag and whipping action to get a high club head speed.

That's completely false. Titleist has said so repeatedly. They denied it in the podcast we did with them last year too. Look it up.

Pretty much everything about this post is wrong, even the title.

1. I thought golfers and non golfers would be interested in seeing this. No one has a swing speed of 150 mph, including Tiger Woods, who is just under 130 mph.

Wrong, and wrong. World record club head speed is around 175 mph. Tiger swings around 120 when he really goes for it.

I had no idea the golf ball compresses this much. But first a little history I recently learned; The Pro V-1 golf ball by Titlist is actually a three part ball, but you have to have a club head speed of at least 100 mph or more to be able to compress all three stages.

Wrong. Compression doesn't work like that. Harder balls go farther, but since we need to carry the ball so far, players with lower swing speeds like a lower compression to increase carry.

If you don't, the ball never fully compresses and you don't get the distance out of it that the pros do.

Wrong. Compression causes a loss of energy. Higher compression cores transfer energy more efficiently

3. So the secret is not to buy the most expensive balls out there because we are actually decreasing the distance we can hit the ball, unless your club head speed is over 100 mph, which unless you are 21 to 50 years old, isn't going to happen!

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Most people realize that cheaper balls go farther. People use premium balls for the control, the spin, etc. And clubhead speed doesn't matter. Higher compression = more distance.

Watch this video, this shows what a golf ball goes through when hit at 150 mph... it's pretty amazing to me how long these balls last. Maybe that's why the Pro's use new balls ever time they play.

Fake, and wrong. Golf balls compress, but not nearly that much. And pros use new balls maybe every 6 holes. It's because they get scuffed by the grooves.

SAM, harder balls don't necessarily go farther - they have a higher ball speed, though. But if they don't have enough spin they can go shorter than a softer ball that is slightly slower but has more optimal spin and/or launch angle.

They have to play the same make of ball, eg, they can't switch from a Pro V1 to a Bridgestone e6 between holes 6 and 7, but the actual physical ball they use can be changed.

    • My first instinct is don't put grooves in a roll face putter. But, it's your putter so... I think we'd all be in a better position to advise you if you posted some photos.  Let us know what you decide and how it comes out.
