Today I played Brentwood Country Club in Long Island, NY and it had quite a few holes with driveable par 4's with only the middle tees being available.

How accurate are you guys on driveable par 4's? I find myself to be quite accurate almost as much as 200 yard par 3's. I'm either on the fringe or greenside rough. Then there are holes with wide open fairways where I end up in the next fairway over... I guess I am not as focused on a specific target for those holes...

I always lay up on driveable par 4's.
I'll hit a hybrid off the tee and the pitch on and get my par.

I know if I take out the big stick I could be looking at a 6 or more.

Depends on the day. I played on Tuesday and I was spraying the driver all over the place. I played yesterday, and except for a two hole stretch, my driver was pretty accurate. We'll see how today goes.

I played a course Thursday that had a 240 yd uphill par 4 over water (carry about 190 yds). My Driver goes about 220 - 240 carry max, so I went for it. I was still about 30 yards short with my first shot. I was playing alone, so I tried two more, one went left the other right. Those kind of holes can be difficult because you can psych yourself out.

Funny thing was the next hole was a 200 yd par 3. I used a 3 wood (my 200 yd club) and put the ball on the green pin high.

I don't get many opportunities to go for it simply because most of the courses I play do not have those opportunites. I think there have been 2 opportunities this year:

First is listed as 328 yards, but I have no idea why. My GPS had us at about 250 from the tee, and it was the ONLY tee available. It's downhill, but the green is fronted by a pond that runs the entire width of the hole, but is only about 30 yards deep. Anything over about 215 was in danger of finding the water. There was sort of a backstop behind the green... and I was driving the ball pretty well that day, so I went for it. The ball never left the pin. It was about 10 yards too long and ended up just off the back of the green in the rough... but I chipped to 4 feet and tapped in for par.

The other is listed at 308 yards, but it also plays downhill. It's a blind tee shot, whether you go for it or not because once you clear the ridge at like 175, you can't see anything. Up to that point in the round, I had hit 4 of 8 fairways... so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was playing pretty well and figured I'd give it a try. I hit the ball well, but it came up about 30 yards short and was in the left rough. I pitched it on to the green, and it died immediately, leaving me 24 feet. I did 2-putt for the par so, no harm - no foul.

I enjoy those opportunities. I always make my decision based on how I'm playing that day. If I feel like I can scramble if I make a mistake, I'll go for it. If I'm confident in my driver, I'll go for it. If I'm struggling and I need a par and I know I can hit 5 iron - wedge and 2-putt... I'll go that route.

I rarely aim for the green on driveable par 4s. That's not to say I don't hit driver, becasue I do, but I usually try to aim just right or left and try to fade it or draw it in. I don't really know why, but it seems like the safer play to me, and I'm fairly accurate.

I don't mind an occasional driveable par 4, but I'm not a fan of them... if you can drive it they should have shortened the hole and made it a par 3, or lengthened it 30 yards.

My theory is go for it, barring a dangerous hazard to the left or right. It really does matter on the hole, but if the rough isn't to bad, a shot 10 yrds off the green is worth the risk if an eagle putt is the other option.

Laying up 50 yards out should guarantee at least a par, but with any decent pitching ability a birdie is almost assured when "launching it."

The reward has to outweigh the risk for me to even try. I have a number of drivable par-4's that I play each season, and I might only go for 2 or 3. I have a ton of confidence in my wedge play, so normally I'll try to stick it for a birdie opportunity.

I like drivable par 4s but my home course doesn't have any. The closest to a drivable par 4 would be the 1st hole played from the ladies tee which is around 270 meters.
From the yellow tees (mens) the shortest par 4 is 312 meters. It's a dogleg left, meaning that a really long hitter can go for the green. Going for it makes the hole about 260 meters but then again there's OB until abou 240 on that line and the green is about 15 meters higher than the tee, meaning that landing it on the fringe plays about 280 meters carry. Unless you are Bubba or Quiros, I doubt many players can go for it. If you can consider that a driveable par 4, that's the only one at my home course.

If it's within my range (270 yards is as high as I'll go), then I'll pull out the driver. For some reason, I'm usually all over the flag when I take out the driver on short par 4's. It's usually my distance judgment that does me in.

270 yards from the next teebox up...better bring your A game bunker left, bunker right, OB immediately left, deep valley right.

I've only driven one par four in my life. I don't remember whether it was 16 or 17 on the Makai course in Princeville Kuai. A 310 yard par 4 dogleg right. I still think about that shot from time to time.

Awesome hole. Look at all that lush green color. For those of us in central Texas, we only see that color three months a year if we're lucky.

I like a course that has the occasional drivable Par 4. Too many however can be a bad thing. But one or two is fine. My home course has two holes that you can legitimately drive. One is 301, the other is 311. The closest I've come to driving them is about 20 yards. I've only had one eagle putt in my life and it was on a 512 yard Par 5 at a local course. I smashed my drive right down the middle and then poked a three wood that ran up on the front of the green for about a 30 foot putt. Missed it and took my tap in birdie.

My favorite drivable hole I've played is at a really nice local course. It's 296 but most is carry. It's a big dog leg left over a field. The guy I was playing with would've drove it but he missed just right. The guy behind us went for it and put it 10 feet away. We're walking off the green and here a ball smash into the green. We turn around and it rolls right by the pin.

When I lived in SW Ohio (until July of 2009) I wasn't playing golf. I wish I'd played this place, man. Beautiful looking, and that stone fence instead of stakes and woods is cooler than an igloo.

I have a normally 'driveable' par 4 at my home course that's 288 yards. I've only been on it twice which is weird as hell because I can comfortably hit my driver that far.

Conversely, there's a hole at my home course that's 350 that plays slightly downhill and USUALLY downwind. I've actually been on the green on that hole the same amount of times - twice.

What I'm getting at is - I do better with the driver when the green isn't an option. I like what Jamo said about shaping it, because for me with a driver I'm really just trying to hit a line and/or have a specific ballflight most of the time. Sometimes having a set target in mind screws me up with the driver. This is all in my mind, I know.

Jamo - I might have to rip off your idea, BTW. I always hit it better overall when I carve it more because thinking about the shot shape and all that keeps a bunch of stupid swing thoughts out of my head.

Personally, I'm not a fan of drivable par 4 holes unless there is a serious penalty for failure. Otherwise all they are is ego boosters which give the average player a false sense of accomplishment. My home course doesn't have any, unless you count a 340 yard hole which requires a minimum 300 yard carry to clear a pond. Everyone I've ever played with lays up, with the rare exception of a long hitter playing as part of a scramble team. Even then I've never see anyone succeed in clearing the water, although I've heard of it being done.

My brother plays a course in southeastern Idaho with a really good drivable par 4.... a miss anywhere and you are toast (it's not an island but it is on a peninsula). At about 240 yards and slightly uphill (if I remember correctly), the hole is too long for a 3 wood for most players, but can actually be overshot by a well hit driver, so missing long or short, right or left can all be punished by bogey or worse.
