I need some help guys on getting some new irons. Reason, I need some help is because I'm left handed. So, I just can't go out and try a buddy's pair. The irons I have are Walmart specials. I have had them for about 8 year probably. I have gotten decent with them, but I need to up my game. I hit them entirely too far. I am hoping it is the loft. The figures I'm about to tell you are no lie.

PW - 175
9 - 200
8 - 225

I don't use a 7 or anything below till I get to a 4 or 3. I use them sometimes instead of my woods. I have to use a 60 degree loft wedge for anything under 150. I need some irons that are pretty forgiving. I just started playing again, so they will need to be some improvement irons. Also, I can't aford the $600 sets.

Any suggestions?

Callaway is a name that comes to mind and

Golf Gods.com has a lefty set on closeout which may fit your setup well considering it has 4-10 irons. The price is right also.

Are those distances from hitting off the side of a mountain? Your hitting the clubs that far and have a 36 handicap? How far you hit a driver 400+.
Why would you ever want new clubs if you hit like that?
Maybe you only need a new putter to take advantage of getting to the greens with your short irons.

well i'm only hitting my driver about 330, but man it's a piece of junk. if I got something better, I think I could edge out 400. I'm not a 36, i'm more of a 20. i used to be around a 8-10, but i changed jobs, and it was hard to me to play...

the reason I want new clubs is because I hit them so far, I have no loft on them. They don't go very high. I have tried everything to get them to jump, but they just stay a little flat.

oh, one of the reasons I am so high on handi right now is because of inconsistency. because i hit the ball so far and I do swing pretty hard, I can have one nasty slice.

Bomb and gouge...bomb and gouge. I barely hit my PW (10 iron) 110 yards.

Seriously, if you in fact hit your clubs that far, including a "junk" driver 330 yards then go see an instructor and get the swing fixed.

BTW, do you actually know your distances? In the other thread about iron distance "How far do you hit your irons" you mentioned that you hit your PW 150 yards..still way long but much different than 175.

These are stupidly cheap. I can't believe how cheap those are. That's a good set too. Nice and straight. They also have a fairly high loft if trajectory is an issue for your... Walmart clubs.

I'm not sure how serious to take you. If you're really hitting that far with wallmart 8 year old irons (and you don't live on the moon), you should be entering long drive competitions. I started a post on knock offs. I was at the Giga-golf site and they do seem to be an honest company, but I've never dealt with them. Here's the thing I came to realize though, why pay that much for knock offs when Everado showed you, you can get the real deal (just an older model year) for that cheap?

ColinMB: I cannot seem to find the clubs that you guys are talking about. I see the 04 big bertha's for 499.00, is that what you guys are talking about?

You guys don't realize when somebody is pulling your leg? I thought every 36 hcp. hit an 8 iron 225 or was it 240? Mine goes 245. With those distances, it shouldn't take much to close it out close to par, but not doubling every hole on your best rounds.

Cruiser,

Just take 1/2 swings with the clubs you have. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Aw heck, we're all just jealous. Congratulations - you've got a great golfing future ahead of you, regardless of the clubs you use.

Unfortunately, I've gotta call "bullshit" on that one. Sorry.

Nobody here will be capable of helping you so long as you either: a) lie about how far you hit the ball or b) possess abilities never before seen in a human being The long drive guys don't hit their 8-irons 225 yards. With a normal progression, your driver would be going about 450 yards.

Try to get hold of Adam Sandler. He had the same problem in "Happy Gilmore" movie

Maybe he can help you. People who visit this site are real, not fictional like you and Happy

I think it's highly unlikely, but it's possible...here is my evidence...he claims a 175 PW...in a tournament, i saw tiger hit a 9 iron 175, from the rough. he swung out of his shoes (for some reason he felt he needed that shot)...his 9 iron is lofted at 45, which is just a strongly lofted PW in game improvement irons.

so, i think it's possible someone can get their PW 175. the 9 iron 200, and even worse the 225 on the 8...not so sure about........i drive the ball a little less than twice my 8 iron distance (155 8 iron, 275 tee shot on a good one)....if you use the same numbers, he should be around 400 with his tee shot...possible? certainly...if it's true though, i wonder why he isn't competing one way or another...

excuse me, but I'm missing something. You're comparing a 20hcp to Tiger? ok, I guess if we talk swing speed only - anybody athletic enough could be compared. Let's put this a side. Now - you're comparing a "Tiger swing out of the shoes from a flyer lie" to 20hcp dude's "average" distance? hm... Call me crazy - I ain't buying it. Bravo Sierra it is.

    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
