My question for those of you who use a mixed iron set (ie: more forgiveness in the long irons and more feel in the short irons....all with the same manufactor of course.) is...What sets are you combining and where to you 'break off' the set. For example PW-8i with one set and 7i-4i another set.

I currently have a set of Mizuno MX-25's and a set of Mizuno MP-57's. I have been using the MX-25 4 and 5 iron and the MP57 6-pw. Seems to work pretty well for me as the lofts are the same and the extra forgiveness in the long irons is greatly appreciated. Am I weird for only using the 25 for 2 irons? There are times where I could use more forgiveness with the 6i too but I think I will miss the feel a bit.

I also think that too many people may not even think about doing a mixed set and maybe thoughts from others here may help give some people more options.....

I specifically bought the 735 CMs because they are a mixed set with 3-4 moderate cavity, 5-7 mid cavity, 8-P muscleback blade. If I could change it up I would have 7-P as the blades. I think what you are doing makes sense to enhance your level of play. I really enjoy my set-up and feel that I have the best of both worlds.

Quite a few companies have offered mixed sets at one point or another... Titleist, Hogan, and Nike come to mind right away, but I'm sure there are others. I guess you could count some of the Adams and others that come with hybrids instead of the long irons as mixed sets in a way.

To the OPs question, most people that I see with "custom" mixed sets (ones with two different models of irons) make the change around the 6 iron or so (3-6 in the more forgiving model, 7-PW in the more workable model).

The MP-57 3i-5i are also not that difficult, at 9.1 hc ...... you should be able to handle very well ....... I even have a MP-67 2i that I only use at the driving range at the moment, since I carry the MP Fli-Hi 18* at the course now ..... practicing the MP-67 2i at the range, makes the MP-57 3i - 5i "easy" irons to use at the course.

BTW mixed sets isn't it for me ..... different feel is difficult in a set ..... and if you do I agree with you to split at the 5 iron, which means a little forgiviness extra in the long iron, but with the PW-5 you want/need to play a fully matching set.

Sweet!!! I play the original Pro Combo irons, they are wonderful. The only real problem, I often hit the long irons higher than the short ones. My 6 may go as high as my 9, maybe higher. Even my 3 can go as high as my 8. Other than that, no problems.

i sometimes play the G15 long irons (4-5-6), with the I15 short irons (7-8-9-P). not always, but sometimes. sometimes i find it nice to have that extra forgiveness in the long irons when my game feels a little off, or if i know i dont need to work the long irons as much.

I agree. The 57's are great clubs and not super tough to hit. I just like having that little extra forgiveness in the onger irons for when I need to swing with a little bit more authority.....gives me the piece of mind. I also find the mx-25 4 and 5 iron to me a little bit better to hit out of the rough.....which seems to be where I use them the most unfortunately!!

Bridgestone J36 had 3 different irons that you cou mix and match and I know the J38 have 2 for sure not sure if they havea bade though Nice irons for sure. Thise Nikes look rely nice though a bit different from the VR but the same concept. I play the 755 set and though the short irons do have some level of playability I was thinking of mixing in the 695 MB 7-pw for a bit more.

No blade in the J38, except a one-off set for a tour player, which I've seen pics of. Other than that, I know a Bridgestone staff player, and he can't get the J-38 in blades.

That's a good problem to have-chart posted here a month or so back showed that pros hit all their irons approximately the same height.

I've also got the Forged Pro Combo set, and used the 3 iron to hit one of my best approach shots ever-certainly the best with a 3 iron.

The problem is my 3 iron is going about 150 feet in the air. My 8 iron may be going 120 feet in the air. I hit the ball high. I don't think I've ever met anyone who could loft it up as high as I can. It is probably because I use shafts that are too weak (S flex) in my irons, to keep the arthritis from hurting.

Well-that is different. I used to do the same thing, 3 and 4 iron higher than short irons. It slowly went away (don't know why). Problem now is occasional scooping, but only with a GW or SW. I understand the arthritis problem, I've got a torn ligament in my right wrist, and arthritis in my left thumb. The ligament can't really be repaired, short of fusing my wrist bones-and the arthritis, well you know, somedays are good and somedays it's swollen and painful.

I actually picked up the Nike irons to use on days when the wrist and thumb are bothering me-graphite shafts. What shafts are in your irons? I ask because the DG S300s in my MacGregor MT Pro-CMs seem to help keep the ball flight down without going to an Xstiff shaft.

They're the True Temper GS-95 type shafts that Nike used back when they made them.

That's right-I think those are a high launching shaft, which might be part of the problem. Plus, you swing fast enough for Xstiff, maybe you'd prefer a heavier iron shaft. That being said, I go from the DG S300s in my MacGregors (@130 grams) to the graphite shafts in my Nikes (@80 grams) without a problem, so I could just be talking out my butt.
