How did your summer go?

Here in Wisconsin, I am starting to put down the swinging sticks to replace my weekend outings with shooting sticks as I get into hunting mode and exit golf mode.

I had a good summer, actually a great summer. Started the year out in Orlando with friends, golfing on some fabulous courses. Shot 41 on the back nine of a Nicklaus course to end the vacation.

Perenially a bogey-round golfer, I broke 80 for the first time ever this year (actually shot 41-34) and followed that up a few weeks later with a 39-40 for my second sub-80 round.

I came within three strokes of beating my (5-hndcp) brother in the annual "Green Jacket" tournament at our family reunion. Mike always wins, but I pushed him hard this year. When I started out with 4 pars, I think he was a bit unnerved!

I still managed my occasional 90 somethings on bad days, but had more sub 85 rounds than I did above 85 rounds.

I didn't golf in a league this year that kept USGA handicap information, but posting my scores on the weekends with friends all summer on a free handicap calculator site, my handicap should be about 10 with the scores I posted (yes, I even posted the 92's and 90's I shot along with the 81's and 82's)!!!

I had a great summer of better driving (worked hard on keeping the ball in the fairway) and better putting. Courses you play a lot look different when you're not peeking out from the woods, the tall grass and the bushes! Fairways are pretty good looking when you can stay in them!!

My final rounds this weekend with buddies went 44-41 and 43-40. If my brothers and I don't play before the Packer opener in 2 weeks, those will be my final rounds for the year. I finished with 4 of 5 pars and 13 putts on the final 40. I hit every fairway on the back nine 40.

I hope your summer was as much fun!

I LOVE WISCONSIN!!! Since I live in NYC without a car I only get to play golf 1 month during the summer every year when I visit Wisconsin :D (mostly the courses around and between GB and Appleton).

I started golf August 2009, and my goal for this year was really improving my short game and NO MORE 10s and get a par... I did improve my short game (I mean it couldnt get worst lol, but seriously, noticably better), I shot a few 10s my first two rounds of the year, but didnt shoot 10 the rest of Summer... I did get my first par ever... and it came on hole 6 of bridgewood GC in neenah.

I am gosh darn awful and always miss hit my driver, so this year I took a page from that heineken commercial (learn to golf from the old guys) and slowed down my swing (maybe 50-60%)... the result was maybe 190-200 yards but fairway 70% of the time which was better than hitting my 2nd near the lady tees because I hit a dribbler off the whites.

At Hilly Haven (In De Pere) I played my first 18 rounds of golf, the front 9 was pretty much avg for me around 64 (lol), but I shot my lowest ever 9 holes in the back nine with a 47 ( I strung together two pars on a par 3 and 4)

I also won my first (and only) match against my brother at Royal St Patricks.

I seem to have developed a very bad habit this year, that I really dont like... I seem to swing my butt off, I lift my left foot and turn it towards the left (facing the fairway, im righthanded) , want to fix that before next year.

My Goal next year is to shoot at least 1-2 pars every 9 holes, get my first birdie, continue to shoot no 10s, and continue to improve my short game.

I live in more of the southern part of Wisconsin (Madison - the Capital) but grew up in the Fox Cities. Played Royal St. Patricks for the first time ever (that's where we held the "Green Jacket" family reunion golf) and shot 43-41. Very tough but fun course. Across hwy 41 is Mid-Valee. 3- nines for a fun 27 holes if you ever get the urge. Not too tough for your handicap, some fun little holes, but a fair course. There's Thornberry in Green Bay and you have to play Brown County. Chaska outside Appleton is fun as is Reid Municipal in Appleton (Reid has very tight fairways, though).

For your swing control and all ... read the book, "The Keys to the Effortless Golf Swing," by Michael McTeigue. Read it, practice it and concentrate on keeping your lower body quiet during your "lighthouse turn" (read the book, you'll understand).

Thanks for the reply ... try some of those golf courses I mentioned!!

My summer was great!!

I started this great game in March with my very first beginner lesson. I slowly built a bag around the idea that I was eventually going to game with my Pop's inherited Irons. I practiced my butt off and went from hardly making contact to scoring one round Under 90 (89). When I started in March my goal was to be able to score under 100, I shattered that and am looking for 85 as my new goal.

But now that school has started back it's tough to find time, especially since I'm a band director and our competitive season is in the fall. Diligent practice this winter and here's to the 80's next summer!!

It was a roller coaster for me

Things fixed,
Keeping my upper center from falling back on the downswing
Putting grip, had a very good year putting, saved my butt a few times, nothing like 15 foot par putts ;)

Working on,
Swinging in synch
Getting a better swing path, fixing the above problem caused me to go over the top and chop at the ball, its always one better shot per round
Short game, horrable, especially this past week

Things to work during the winter,
Working out
Putting
Chipping technique
Swing path

I started a month late at my new club.
We had our first junior team ever and we made it to the finals of the limerick fourballs.
We could've been in the munster finals if I didn't bottle it in a playoff but that's history.
I got a starting handicap of 28 and my handicap dropped 10 shots in only 6 or so competitions, I'm still a little high though. I'm playing to around 14-15 at the moment.

My ballstriking is excellent right now, I just need to work on my short game and I'll be down to 10-ish.
Hoping to get into single digits next year.

Mine was pretty good. Didn't get my Tour card, but finally got my handicap index down from off the chart (~38 to 40 if not for the cap) to under 30, and I expect it to continue falling. Broke 100 a couple times on 18-hole courses. Ball striking is far, far, far better than it's ever been and I am now greenside in "regulation" on probably 80% or more of holes I play. If I can keep that up and find the time to keep my chipping / putting practice regularly I should be able to drop the handicap quite a bit further without any major overhauls. For the first time I can really see what I need to do to reach bogey golf, and it's well within reach.

Fortunately down here the summer is just a small part of the golf season, so I don't anticipate having to slow down any due to weather. Trying to graduate and find a job will be the reason I have to slow down...

I haven't been able to play much since I've been busy. Hit a really cold streak in July but started getting my swing back in August, and am playing well right now. My handicap has hovered around 16 all summer, but this fall I should be able to get out more, hopefully drop it a few points before the end of the year.

Well, it was bad actually. The dry, hot weather wreaked havoc on most courses in my area causing major problems. This has effected my play quite a bit. The hot temps also kept me off the range much of the summer. So needless to say, I am excited that fall is actually about here and I can get to work on my swing for next year. The weather has got me off track right now.

Had a great summer and reached quite a few goals. Our summer was particularly hot and dry so grass was really affected both on my home course and in my back yard. It started out great and was lovely...but the drought set in and grass is brown and crunchy (in my back yard). Still need more consistency with all woods and putting....and then...we're shooting par next year.

I had my best summer of golf yet.

I started playing regularly with the company club after work and by late July my driver had the most beautiful draw to it. I was so excited after several rounds of good golf that I screwed up my game and bought a honest to goodness set of irons. I have been struggling with my entire game since.

I keep tinkering with my swing mechanics and the complete sum at this point is great iron shots and a atrocious slice with the driver.

Thankfully, down here my golf season is really getting started and I have all winter to get my driver back in line.

I would say this summer is really the start of my golfing addition. (17 years after my first game, 7 years after I bought my first set of clubs). Yes, a good summer indeed.

Ran my Slade into a tree early on.....oh wait.......j/k

Actually didn't progress as much as I thought. I blame that on lessons early (rebuilt swing) on that I am just now starting to see the results from. 3 steps back but now caught up and fill like I am going to progress nicely over the next few months. Also mid Summer 16 day vacation without golf didn't help.

Now scoring overall is coming. One thing that is working is my last few rounds I have had 2 birdies in each. Thats included 2 in a 9-hole outing one weekend evening. Last Sunday I think I had as many birdies as pars. Lot's of boogies. (but if I can get the short game just a little more tuned up I can turn a lot of those into pars)

We actually played Reid my first time playing golf... and didnt like it very much... we actually were going to try Mid Valee this summer when I was there, but decided to save that course for next year. Ill definitly check out the other courses though, I love playing different courses. (In WI ive played Hilly Haven, Bridgewood, Royal St Patricks (I have not played the back nine or hole 19 at RSP, saving that for next year), Reid, Countryside, High Cliff, and Ledgeview).

Mine was good except for the golf. I was really inconsistant for the entire year. In my league, I shot a 37 low and 48 high (wow that's special). 18 low was 81 and high was 93. Shot some good scores for me lately but making some costly errors. Missing short putts, hitting bad wedges, just bad golf shots.

There is some life in my game though. My body has been changing all summer as I've been lifting hard. Playing sore isn't easy and particularly my legs. I've focused on them so at times it has been painful to walk. But that is just an excuse.

I see my problem but it isn't easy to fix. I turn my shoulders too flat and this has a ripple through my entire move. I also have a tempo consistancy issue. Sometimes, I just don't have the right speed of arms to match the speed of the body turning. I overswing or underswing, it is just too inconsistant.

But I see the light. I have more distance than ever, feel like I understand what a good move is and my ball striking is improving. I expect 2011 to be the best I've ever played.

wellllll...didn't quite get my handicap down as much as i wanted to...but i also didn't play or practice as much as i wanted to so i guess i should've seen that coming.

my short games definitely getting better each time i play. driving is more consistent with this being my first year focusing on shaping my drives a bit more. Not hte most successful at it yet but my fades are relatively solid...my draws, not so much.

my ball striking has improved. Spent a lot of time this season at the range to improve my ball striking and overall consistency with my irons. Definitely paid off.

Overall good summer, not enough golf, too much work...but good none the less.

My golf season is just starting. I play a few rounds in the summer, but its too hot for me. I play 2-4 times a week from September - May. I grew up in Maine, so the mild winter weather in Virginia Beach is pretty nice for me

I too live in Wisconsin, Appleton area. I am still planning on golfing a couple more months yet as I'm not into hunting like I once was. This summer was a "game rebuilding" season for me and it has been very satisfying.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
