Let's say I have a 25-30 yard pitch shot, I always get the ball up in the air and down, but it rolls another 10 yards. How do i get the ball to stop?

here's my setup: slightly open to the target, ball position in the middle, weight on my leading foot, hands are ahead of the ball.

use a softer ball.
Or get a Vokey Spin Milled wedge with the old grooves, you'll get plenty of spin that way.

There's no way you could be getting 10 yards of roll, do you mean 10 feet?

you need to get the ball up enough with enough spin to land it soft. you also need to get clean contact to be able to spin the ball well enough.

Practice at the range with your wedges.

Or let me ask this. Do you guys take divots w/ a 25-30 yard pitch shot? b/c I think i'm picking the ball too cleanly therefor there's no backspin.

25-30 yard shots...no divots. Usually my short wedge shots are clean off the grass.

Does your ball go high at all? what wedge are you using? It might even be a simple solution like getting a higher lofted wedge...

I wouldn't call it a divot, but I make a mark on the ground.

I think it could be your wedge/ball more than anything else

I would say clean, too, because personally I like to treat these shots almost like bunker shots. Slap the bounce of the club on the grass and let the ball shoot up high to land soft. The key feel is that your right forearm is actually rolling underneath your left (or, if you prefer, that the right palm is pointing up at the sky through impact) so that the club face just lays back and doesn't close at all as you come through.

Stretch.

here's my setup:

Slightly open ..... no need to do so (but it might help you turning properly), hands are ahead ...... hmmm how far, if your hand are well forward, you reduce loft !

Are you making a let's say handsy swing (needed !) or are you making a chipshot swing, keeping the hands ahead of the ball, intended to have the ball rolling forward after landing ...... Just some thoughts .....

I think 25-30y is a very difficult distance to stop it and you always should at least calculate one bounce. If i drive it in low with a steep attack angle i take a minor divot - maybe half the size of a 10$ note but i think thats something personal, others pick it clean while others take a bigger divot. The key fundamentals are playing it further back, having a steep angle, hitting it flush (thats where most people struggle), and not releasing the clubface in the followthrough and dont flip it either.

Ball slightly back in the stance.

Use your body to turn through, not all hands.

Keep the face pointed toward the target, don't turn the hands over.

Edit : Also ensure the grooves on your clubs are clean and sharp.

Sorry but a bunker shot imo is not what he was planning to do. And if you play it this way, you dont put maximum spin on the ball, but you make it stop by a high flight path and gravity that brings the ball down again. Also this shot from this distance involves a lot more risk and distance issues than a low trajectory shot.

He asked how to do it. I gave him one way, you gave him another. Different strokes for different folks.

Your probably comming up on the ball.. comon mistake is to try to maintain that forward press or forward press more with the chip shots. the problem is if you practice that you will end up with your left arm chicken winging, which brings the club upward not descending. Just concentrate more on shoulder rotation in the chip shot and maintaint the position of the hands ahead of the club.

First of all, thank you everyone for chiming in.

During lunch, I must have viewed 10 different pitching tips on youtube. This is what i got from it:
- normal stance (not open or closed, but can be slightly open)
- about 60% weight on leading foot
- on backswing, club head gets above hands
- on downswing, turn hips (that's something i never did since my stance was open at address)
- depending on what type of flight you want, position the ball accordingly:
low flight = ball back of stance, hands ahead of ball
medium flight = ball center of stance
high flight (flop shot) = ball in front of stance, club head open
- one or two tips mentioned taking divots vs sweeping the ball.

anyhow, what i will probably focus on is my stance and turning the hips on downswing. also will play around with opening the club head for loftier shots.

after you contact the ball is your club face open or closed? If you close the club face the ball will run out but if you keep the club face open the ball has a better chance of checking up.

When I am trying to spin a pitch I usually try to hit it low. I would say when I hit those shots I wouldn't call it a divot but I certainly disturb the grass. That's how you are going to get that one hop and stop shot. If you want to take it in higher why don't you hit it ten yards shorter and let it run out to the hole?

    • So, last night was the first night of golf league. First tee I stuck in the ground this year. First time hitting a ball off the grass. Left my putter on my indoor putting mat in the office so I was able to borrow one of my pal's spare putters. I putted poorly, but not the putters fault. Took me forever to realize the greens were very very slow. We've had tons of rain and the greens were downright furry. I also went from my car to the clubhouse to the first tee. No warm up.  It took me a bit to get it going. But finished solid. I think I had four penalty strokes in the first 5 holes.
