Smaller Head Driver

Hey guys, whats some of your favorites of drivers with heads smaller than 460cc, like 380cc etc?

pretty rare that they make driver heads as small as 380cc...
most small heads are gonna be in the 430-440 range.
from the top of my head:

Cleveland DST Tour
Callaway FT Tour
Nike VR Tour
Nike Sq Dymo Prototype (probably the smallest at 380cc but not available to public)
Taylormade R9 (430cc version)
Cobra S9 Pro D (i think...)
Titleist 909D3

or if you can find older Titleist drivers like the 905S or 905T...those are excellent drivers.

let me guess... you're looking to trade out your driver for a smaller tour driver?

wow you know your stuff. Thanks for the list. Im just looking at the moment, want to demo some before I go trading out. I have been taking lessons and my swing has been changing. Im hitting slight draws now. My stock shot use to be a pull fade. Im hitting every club in my bag much better except my driver. Im hooking the crap out of it whereas when I bought it I was a fader and it worked. I have been pulling out the 3 wood on the tee because of this and hitting the 3 wood 240-250 in the middle of the fairway, thats like how far my drives go when Im hitting my driver good. Anyway I think the shape of the head on the diablo is geared towards helping slicers keep it straight and I like the small head of the 3 wood. I also want to try a little more loft on my driver, like 10.5

Mottler621, if you're fighting a hook with your Diablo though, the answer may not be a "retro" driver, just a more properly fitted one (whether clubhead and/or shaft). Either a "tour" head that's less closed at address, and/or a stiffer/heavier shaft might do the trick. Or go adjustable like me (i play a Nickent Evolver 4DX) so you can tweak settings yourself via trial & error if you don't have the time/energy/money for a proper fitting!

i see. :) blades...nice premium putter... now a tour driver... you're almos there! my guess is after your driver purchase, you're gonna purchase a couple Vokey wedges. correct?!

anyway, jokes aside... I actually originally went with the Callaway FT Tour ($400) btu returned it after trying out my friend's Cleveland DST Tour and basically falling in love with it...bought it for half the price of the FT Tour.

Others I thoroughly enjoyed hitting are the Cobra S9 Pro D and Taylormade R9. Both fantastic drivers.

Getting a tour driver won't solve fighting a hook at all. You just need to find the right driver with the right shaft.

Yea thats what I was thinking. Try something with a face a little more open, little heavier shaft, smaller head and 10.5 degrees loft. Im going to play some rounds with one before I go trading out to see if it helps at all.

I know , I know, it looks bad, lol. Im doing this for a reason though, I dont like hitting my driver into the trees on the left. Just want to demo some drivers for a few rounds that have the characteristics I mentioned above and see if it changes anything. BTW everyone of those guys on those high school teams had vokey wedges in their bags, lol.

I suck and I have good irons and vokeys but its because I traded some goods at work for a used set. I have a TM R7 quad and its less than 460cc. Old but maybe you awnna look into that in a 10.5. Im actually looking for a 10.5 and a larger head and maybe switch to a ergular shaft too. Or at least try one.

I don't think club head size has anything to do with it. It's all in the shaft and the loft of the club. Hitting a 9 stiff shaft Callaway would be freakin impossible for me because my swing speed is around 90 and the thing would be a knuckleball from me (little to no spin to get a workable flight path). I would seriously consider starting with a crazy high lofted driver and work your way down until you find your fit. It is the spin you generate off the club face that dictates the general flight path of your ball. Read this article...seriously...it was an eye opener for me.

I have been driving 1000% better after grabbing a cheapo Tour Edge 16 degree Geomax. 260 straight as an arrow 9 of 10 shots. 260 from a 16 degree driver!? My ball flights are no higher than my Nike 10.5...it's all in the spin I guess!

There is nothing about the diablo edge head or a stock stiff shaft that should cause you to hook the ball. A pull hook is likely an in to out path with a closed club face. You could swap out your driver for something smaller, harder to hit and less accurate, but it won't fix things.

Hell, I've got a Titleist 975D with a ProForce 75g S in it. I'll trade you if you really want a smaller headed classic driver.

Why blame yourself when you can blame some blockhead for designing such an inconsistent and unreliable product? If golf clubs were cars they'd always be in the shop

Because you're swinging it differently.

lol, Im swinging it the same as all my other clubs. I actually have to try to swing it differently than my other clubs or it will hook, thats why Ive just been the 3 wood alot more.

Agreed. The shaft could be a culprit, although it's much more likely that you are flipping through the ball and your timing isn't as good with the driver as the shorter clubs.

Post a video of a recent swing in the instruction forum before any irrational ebay purchases ;)
