Hey guys, I'm quite dissapointed today cause my round today was horrible. And not horrible in the sense that I played horrible. I was hitting the ball awesome today, seriously I don't remember if I miss-hit a shot today, it was awesome from tee to green, but then... the green. Ouch...!

I made 15/18 GIR... but made 38 putts... you have got to be kidding me! Three 3-putts and one 4-putts! Missed a 3 footer for par at 2 a 3 footer birdie at 4, made birdie at 5, missed 4 footer for birdie at 7, a 4 footer 15 and a 3 footer for birdie at 17, including some missed par saves.

Ended up with a 78... I really don't know what I'm going to do with my putting, I really want to throw it, break it, but I know it's not the putter fault.

Just want to share my sadness with you guys.

Cheers.

"My round today was horrible..."

its all relative man.. everybody on here harps on low handicappers that say they had a bad day and shot 78 or whatever. to a 15 thats great but to a 3 a 78 isnt that good. the feelings and emotions are the same between a 3 that shoots 78 and a 15 that shoots 100.

that being said. to the OP.. make sure your shoulders are squared up when you putt.. i usually miss every single putt if my shoulders arent square. other than that.. all i can say is it will be better next time.

Haha... sorry. But it's really frustrating man, when you hit the ball well, put it where you want and then being on the green you throw away those good shots. I'm not saying "Uh this round easily was a 68", no but at least those par putts I missed, I would be pleased with a 74.

@out_in_30: thanks man, I will check that! Cheers!

I've had rounds recently like that. My ball striking will be pretty good but once I'm around the green and on it, it all goes up in smoke. I've also had issues the past 3 rounds with course management. I'm finding I am not really thinking out shots and instead just hitting to a general area. When I have my better rounds I always think out each shot and after the round I feel like "Hey, I played pretty smart today."

You'll get it back with the next round. Don't let it take over your mind.

I understand where you're coming from. If you haven't read Rotellas Putting out of your mind, I would highly reccomend it, as it focuses mainly on the mind part of putting but leaves technicalities out (seems to me based on your HC that technicalities aren't your problems). Also with regards to practicing putting, use some of the time to set up competitions with others, I compete with my sons (10 year old twins) and my putting has improved since I started practicing with them since every practice putt counts. These 2 things changed my putting dramatically, I don't hesitate anymore with a breaking downhill putt on a lightning fast green any more or any other putt for that matter. Just getting a routine and sticking to it will do wonders. Hope it helps,

I second the recommendation for Putting Out Of Your Mind. Very enthusiastically. Your problems are probably mostly in your head and the good news is you can fix that very quickly with a fairly simple change of attitude. Personally, I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to not get all bent out of shape about putting anymore.

It was your putters fault...put it in time out. It will behave better next time.

I have had great ball striking rounds lately and haven't been able to putt to save my life. Missing those 3 foot par saves gets old quick. Shake it off and get your confidence back and you will be fine.

Yeah I feel for you, I can only dream of shooting 78!

On a serious note I guess that you shooting 78 is like me shooting 108 so I can understand your pain. Try the old one foot forward putting for the shorter puts (ala Justin Rose) works for me as it keeps my right arm tucked in and stops me pushing the puts. I do this from 5-6 feet and in.

I think it's the time of the year. I had a 43-putt round yesterday, but still shot 85 because of plenty of fairways and GIRs. Putting has been mediocre all year so I'm looking for a new putter

Guys, please stop with the reverse elitism. If I shoot 78 I'm gonna be ticked too. It'd be the same thing as an 18 handicapper shooting 102 or something. You can all relate to having a bad day. Forget the score.

Focus instead on the 38 putts as the OP intended. Back on topic... Sounds like you need to spend some time working on your putting, mainly your confidence over the ball. Fortunately, this is pretty easy. It just takes time. I have a couple of drills that really instill confidence with the flatstick if you're interested. The first one is super easy, find a flat putt and make 100 in a row (if you miss, start over). Start with something short, maybe even as short as 18" (a la Stan Utley). I've been doing this drill at about 4' lately but started out the year at about 2'. This drill really creates confidence in your ability to start the ball on a given line and roll it smoothly. Next, repeat the above drill but find a putt that moves a little bit. Generally, I'll find a hard breaking 3 footer and knock in 50 in a row, then I'll move to the other side of the cup and knock in 50 more. Of course, if you miss, start over. This drill creates a ton of confidence in short putts, you will really start to expect that you'll hole out every putt inside of 6' regardless of the break. The last drill that I work on is an adaptation of the many "ladder drills." I start with 3 or 4 balls and put one at roughly 1'. I knock it in then put the second ball just off of my right foot (roughly 18"). Knock that one in and repeat always moving back roughly 6" on every putt. If I miss, I'll repeat from that spot until I make 3 in a row then move back again. If I miss the same putt a second time, I start moving forward (same amount, just place the new ball just off my left foot) and work my way all the way back to the hole. I like to do this drill right before teeing off. You get a really good feel for the speed and get a very good idea of how putts break from several distances. If you're putting well, you can easily get back to 15 or more feet on this drill (I'll occasionally get back to 20+ ft). Good luck w/your putting. Keep hitting greens, the flatstick will come around and you'll be routinely posting scores in the 60's in no time.

Amazon will ship to Mexico for $5 extra, as I recall. You can also get it on your computer if you download their Kindle app.

Was this a new course for you? If not, were you playing a familiar course at a different time of the day so the greens speed was different? Were these misses based on distance (speed) versus break (read), or a combo of the two? In other words, is there either a rhyme or a reason for 38 putts for this round?

I started the year at 25 then moved to 30, then to 50, etc, etc. It's all about getting a feel for your putter and developing confidence in your stroke. If you're having problems with 100, scale it back a bit and go for 50 or move the ball closer to the hole. By pushing for the full 100 right off the bat, unless you're successful, all you do is hurt your confidence. That's a bad thing.

I find that I vary these drills even day to day. If I'm putting poorly on a day that I intend to practice, a lot of times I'll just pick up and hit some balls on the range for a while then try again. I never want to leave a practice green thinking about how bad I putted. I always want to leave with a positive feeling for my stroke. Thus, if it feels wrong, I don't push the issue. Bad practice is worse than no practice. For some reason, just this year, I've really grown to love putting. I used to practice putting because it was a necessary evil (a la Hogan). I hated spending time on the practice green. That has recently changed and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I'm loving my putter, maybe it's because practice has really benefited my game, I don't know. If you can find a way to really enjoy spending time on the practice green, things will turn around pretty quick. FWIW, according to my Scorecard statistics, this year I've yet to miss inside of 3 feet*, I'm making 84.9% of my putts from 4-6 feet and I'm averaging 28.85 putts per round (74.6 feet). I couldn't be happier about my putting this year and I attribute it all to the drills that I detailed above. *: I'll miss the next 3 footer I face as punishment for this post.
