Long Uphill Par 3's

Quite a few on my home course. Including the second longest Par 3 in the country.

One in Particular is a 180 Yard Uphill. With a BIG lip on the front. It needs a good 3 Iron or 3 Wood to get up there.

The only trouble is getting it to stop on the green...

How do you take on such a shot?

Hit my 6 iron 180 or softer 5 iron (for GIR) but since it will be uphill then wedge on close and try to putt in..

I try to not be intimidated by it and just setup and take a nice, easy swing. I'd think many people get tense and swing too hard which is the main thing I'm trying to avoid.

We have one like that on my league course. It's 180 to 190 depending on the tee. I've done best with my 3 wood set up to hit it higher. My 3 wood is my 200 yard club. When ever I try a 3 or 4 hybrid, I swing to hard and miss the green.

This type of hole is one reason I have a hybrid. A 3-iron comes in too flat, and if you overshoot a green with stadium type mounds in behind, you could end up 50 yards long by the time it stops rolling.

Playing at Mcleansboro IL yesterday and the 7th hole there is very similar, anywhere from 170-180 yards but very much uphill, plays like its about 200 yards, can only see the flag from the teebox and theres a big tree just short and left of the green which adds another element to deal with. I usually hit my 3 hybrid and just hope to get close, im usually happy to make a 4 on that hole, which is what i got as i missed short and right with a not very good tee shot, chipped on and 2 putted for bogey. Ive only made par on that hole once and ive played there many times. The green on that hole is very tough, a lot of break on any putt.

I think most people take too much club, yes TOO MUCH CLUB. The ball comes in hot on drastically uphill shots, and if you don't hit it perfect with enough spin it will go flying off the back of the green. I like to take whatever club that will hit the ball as high as possible, while still making the front of the green. Have had better luck with that approach.

There are some holes that are just tough on a course for certain players. Sounds like this is one of them for you since you're not a long hitter with your irons.

Rather than getting overwhelmed or frustrated, consider 4 an acceptable score here and work on your chipping and putting to make the up and down more likely. Remember, golf isn't a game of perfect.

There seems to be a trend towards longer par 3's and I hate it. Give me a 120-160 yard par three with some traps or water around/near it and it can be just as tough. The courses the pros play have long par 3's with huge greens. The muni's etc are going to the long par 3's to copy but with small greens.

I played 2 par 4's within the last week that were shorter than that.

^That seems strange, some courses are just jokes though... I played a course called waveland golf course in Des Moines Iowa last week and the opening hole on the back is a 240 yard par three. That course isn't particualary long, *maybe 6500 yards*

You have to remember they make courses for seniors and *weekend* golfers that aren't normal or standard yardages. My crappy golfer friend drove a par 4 with a 5-wood one time and I've had it out for most muni's since. :) That doesn't count as an eagle!!! :)

I actually got my first eagle on a 450 yard downhill par five that I was able to hit a pw to 2 inches. :( That doesn't count either.

I prefer 180-220 yard par threes.

^ditto, I love it. I hit a 3wood to the fringe and chipped it close for the par, who cares just a par right? My friend missed well right, pitched, pitched again, chipped and two putted... I'm up 3 strokes to start the match. :)

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
