My wife, who is 5'9", has always wanted to get out and play. She gets out there on the range and in the yard chipping with me but has never played a round at a course. I just bought a new set of TM R9's and she has been hitting my old TM RAC OS's w/stiff shaft. While she hits the irons pretty well, I think she would be more comfortable with more flex and a little shorter club. (BTW..the clubs are standard, off the shelf length).

What is the best length / flex for irons and hybrid/woods/driver for a woman her height?

Thanks

Tim

Women's clubs are generally shorter and lighter. I was playing with a woman during our annual 911 vs EMS tournament and picked up an iron of hers and I was shocked how light it was. I still think if she is serious about playing she should get her swing speed checked at the least to find out the correct shaft to use. Unless she's extremely fast she'll probably need a R flex shaft. Some manufacturers have a generic Ladies flex shaft. Hope this helps!

My wife is a little over 5'9" and it was suggested that she play with Men's senior clubs. They are a little longer for her height, but the A flex is very similar to the Ladies flex. Bought her a new set of Nickent senior irons (4/5 H, 6-SW iron) for dirt cheap off eBay. The clubs are very light and flex perfectly for her. Also, there are a lot of options when buying senior clubs vs. ladies clubs.

My wife is 5'10, I'm barely 6'0.

Overall length is no issue. She has a different build than me...longer legs and thinner whereas I have short legs and more long-waisted...so lie angle seems to be a little bit of a problem. Shaft flex and swingweight are the big issues for her using my clubs. She doesn't really play because she doesn't have her own sticks. When she gets them and plays for a year or two, she'll be dangerous. She hits it really well for a beginner already IMO. She'll have a better looking swing than myself; I love watching people with long, slender builds swing becasue they always look great, like they're cracking a whip.

I can't watch my wife drive because her grip is terrible. Instead of hand-over-hand around corners she holds the inside of the steering wheel. She obviously didn't learn to drive on a farm - she'd have broken her wrist after driving over a frozen cow turd.

Anyway, she had my older set of Apex PCs in the bag (R shaft - Apex 3) for a couple years and she hits them better than her "ladies irons" which go pretty much straight up in the air.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
