Dilemma: 4 wedges or 2 hybrids?!?!?

Alright...you can see from my signature that my current bag set-up includes 2 hybrids: a 17 degree and a 20 degree that I think is actually 21, and 3 wedges: a 47 degree pitching wedge from my iron set, a 56 degree SW that I need to replace because I hate it, and a 60 degree Vokey.

I am having issues with the gap between my PW and SW. I could just carry a GW (I own a 52) but then I have an extra club. I was going to attempt to remedy this situation by buying a 54 degree wedge. Only, as a lefty, this is a total pain in the arse as I want a higher-bounce 54 that I can hit on long bunker shots and the only company that makes one is Ping - even their WEDGES look like you're swinging a car hood, "this cannot stand, man". The other option is to get a regular 54 Vokey which doesn't have the bounce I want. The third option is to get a Custom Studio Vokey but I can't stomach spending 200 bucks on a club with a limited lifespan to begin with.

Part of me is considering ditching one of my hybrids and going to a conventional PW/GW/SW/LW set-up because this is all turning into such a headache. This would mean, still, swapping out my GW and SW (neither of which I'm fond of) and probably going to a 19 degree hybrid...but I'll have less equipment headaches later......

I don't know. What would you all recommend? Is this clear as mud? Do you have any further questions about my abilities and yardages that would help? Arrrgghhhh.

You can have 2Hs and 4 wedges if you do the following with your irons:

Loft difference between 5i and 4i, and 4i and 3i is only 3º, not 4º like others. So, bend 5i one degree strong, and drop the 4i. This will alleviate the yardage "bunch up" in the long irons, and save you a club. The plan...

I... Now After
3.. 21º... 21º
4.. 24º... Drop
5.. 27º... 26º
6.. 31º... 31º

Let me know what you think!

You can have 2Hs

Errrgggh. Need to ponder that. Initial reaction is no...but will consider further.

One hybrid and four wedges is the way to go. You'll need to drop your three iron, but it shouldn't be an issue if you're comfortable strengthening the lofts of your iron set. I had my irons bent one degree strong across the board, except for the 4i which is a touch stronger. I haven't had any problems digging and I'm really happy maintaining 12-13 yards between clubs. My setup...

H . . . 225 . . . 19°
4i . . . 210 . . . 21.5°
5i . . . 197 . . . 25°
6i . . . 185 . . . 29°
7i . . . 172 . . . 33°
8i . . . 160 . . . 37°
9i . . . 147 . . . 41°
Pw . . . 135 . . . 45°
Gw . . . 122 . . . 50°
Sw . . . 110 . . . 55°
Lw . . . 97 . . . 60°

Hope that helps. I feel your lefty pain.

Your signature tells me you already have 15 clubs in your bag.

2 wedges or 4 hybrids, and you'll still have 15. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Anyway, I think the 4 Iron drop is good idea, I'm pretty sure Jim Furyk does the same thing. Although I'd prefer to increase the loft of the 3-Iron rather than decreasing the 5-Iron. Or just drop the 3-Iron since you have the hybrids.

Consider how many times you'd use each in a round. I personally dropped my 2H for a 3W and haven't had many shots where I've regretted my club choices. I think it depends on your length off the tee and what type of player you are. If you'll use the wedge more than the hybrid (in terms of shots per round, not utility) then go with the wedge. I'm pretty happy with my current wedge-heavy setup.

I would drop the 17° hybrid, and 21° 3 iron to keep in the 14 club limit and go with the following setup + putter/driver...

3 wood = 15°
Hybrid = 20°
4 iron = 24°
[rest of irons]
PW = 47°
GW = 51/52°
SW = 56°
LW = 60°

You can't put it close to the pin from 200+ yards with a 17° hybrid anyway, so you won't miss it I doubt when choosing between your 15 degree fairway wood or 20 degree hybrid depending on the lie & distance to pin.

Conversely, without a gap wedge, you have an 11 degree gap between your PW and Cleveland wedge. Plugging this gap would probably be much more useful to you I'd have thought?

Actually, that's the same setup I have! :S Best of luck!

Well where do you need the most help?

Do you find yourself needing a gap wedge/ 17* hybrid?

do you hit the 3i that often?

I had the same situation as you, and decided on 4 wedges (getting a new 52*). Really, how many greens do you plan on hitting from outside 215? I find that I behind my putter, the second most amount of strokes comes within 150 yards, and not over 200.

I my setup is 2 hybrids and 4 wedges...the same thing that has been suggested already. I dropped my 3 & 4 iron and carry a 52, 56, and 60. I could probably get rid of my 60 but it certainly comes in handy that one or two times that I pull it out.

It depends on how you hit your 3W and how often you like to use your LW. I have a 2H and 3H and 4 wedges because I hit my 17*H better than my 15*3W in almost all situations. So I play with without a 3wood.

I am a big wedge fan. I have the 3W and 7W then 4I and that covers the distances pretty well in the high end. I personally just don't care for the hybrids as I hook them terribly (the one's I've had). With 4 wedges (well my PW is more of a 9I) I feel I can make birdies inside of 125. From the distances of 190+ I really just want the center of the green or around it with a reasonable chance at par. My high end yardage is 185 4I 200 7W and 220-230 3W. I love the 7 wood. It stops like a wedge were as any other club I can hit 200 yards, it flys too low to stop where it lands.

Please consider this.

What if you bought a new Vokey 56 and dropped your 60??? 56 Vokeys are very easy to open up, and if you need to bend it one degree strong/weak, it isnt hard to do. I can hit just as good a flop shot with a 56 vs. my 60... Just an idea, and that way you can carry your 2 hybrids as well.

I think this is a sensible solution.

In your sig there are 15 clubs in the bag .......

Wedges could also be 47-52-58 ..... and you would still keep the 2 hybrids, if you want or need the extra wedge leave out the 24* Hybrid or the 3i

Sorry everyone....

I currently don't carry the 3Iron very often unless I'm playing a par 3 on a particular course with that yardage. Sh*t. Should have had that in the original post. My 3 iron only gets used for the aforementioned par 3 or during practice sessions. I carry the 3 hybrid instead.

Why don't you get a 52* High Bounce wedge and then bend it to 54*. That should give you the extra bounce you are looking for.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
