Hello. I'm looking to upgrade my shaft in my '07 Burner 5-Wood (18*). I am a junior and I bought it about a year ago with the stock senior shaft and cut it down about an inch and a half. I have since grown and became a 2 hcap, and need to upgrade to a stiff shaft. I am posting to ask if anyone could reccommend a stiff shaft that produces lower ball flight and low-mid spin. I've never done this before, but I only want to spend about 80$. I would love a high quality shaft that I can use for a long time. Any suggestions???

And BTW I would have my coach do it and he gives me 15% off everything and knows what he is doing.

Thanks for all responses.

Personally, I'd say it depends on what you use your 5 wood for. If it's a club that you hit from the tee often, a lower ball flight with mid-low spin will keep you in the fairway more often. If it's a club that you use to try and get home on a par 5, a higher trajectory will help. In addition, the conditions you play in also play a role.
Being a junior as well, I was faced with a similar decision around April when I was about to buy my Titleist 909 F2 3-wood. I had the option of putting in a Aldila Voodoo, Matrix Ozik X Con 6 or a MRC Diamana Blue. The height of my shots would have increased with the latter whilst the former would have been more accurate off the tee due to the lower spin. In the end, I opted for the Matrix because I use it in both occasion and I play in very windy conditions and it launches just a touch higher than the Aldila.

Alright well I don't ever use my 5 wood off of the tee. I don't use it for getting home on par 5's, just on long par 4's. I play at Torrey Pines, which is usually pretty firm and you get good roll. I was thinking asking people to reccommend a low trajectory because I don't carry a 3 wood, and I could use a little bit more distance, and I hit my 5 wood waayyyy up in the air. I carry 14 clubs, so I don't wish to pick up a 3 wood, and I like the head on the '07 Burner, so I thought I would just get a shaft upgrade. Also, the current shaft on my 5 wood is 50 grams, but it was cut down so I'm sure it is much lighter. It is way to light and I would like a heavier shaft. Thanks for your response. It's appreciated.

We're all here to help! From your description I'd say go for a lower launching / spinning shaft. Keep in mind that adding 30 grams of weight (to have a normal 3 wood shaft weight) will naturally bring the spin rate down significantly.
I'd keep the Burner if I were you, it's a good head that you are comfortable with it seems. I'd look for a UST Proforce V2 or the Grafalloy Prolaunch Red. I might be wrong, but I heard the latter is on sale at rockbottom golf for like 20 $ so I figure it shouldn't be too expensive to get it from your pro either. Keep those two shafts in mind when you make your final decision. In addition, talking to your pro could also give you a better idea of what shaft you're looking for and I doubt he'd suggest something that wouldn't fit your swing just because he would make more money out of it.

gonna reccomend the Graffaloy Pro Launch Red (original, not axis) shaft again here
its a lower launching, low spinning shaft that is super smooth and in expensive
it can be had for less then $50 shipped on ebay

check it out its a nice option for sure!

Got mine for like $27 shipped on eBay so it's a deal that can't be beat. Do you have any problems with hitting your 3 wood onto greens? I was contemplating on changing my TFC 149 shaft on my Ping 4 wood but didn't want to have getting it up in the air. You might be a bad person to ask since you're a 2 and probably don't have any trouble getting height. Your shaft says MKP for Ben Sayer by Grafalloy right?

Another shaft you might be interested is a UST Proforce V2 or a UST Axivcore shaft. Very affordable shafts and very reliable.

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like the immediate two shafts I should look into are the Graffaloy Pro Launch Red and the UST Proforce V2 shafts. I have the Pro Launch Blue on my driver, and I like the characteristics of it, so I'm going to put the Graffaloy Pro Launch Red #1 on my list, without hitting either shafts. I have seen many fairway woods with the V2 shaft so I'm guessing it is a nice piece. I will talk to my coach tommorow about it, and post what he says. I'm eager to be able to go after a FW without it sailing wherever it wants.

Any other shafts I should put on my list???
Any immediate differences between the Graffaloy Pro Launch Red and the UST Proforce V2 shafts?? (I would go with a stiff shaft.)

not at all

You might be a bad person to ask since you're a 2 and probably don't have any trouble getting height.

i have a pretty steep swing too, so the low launch shafts help keep the ball flight down

Your shaft says MKP for Ben Sayer by Grafalloy right?

yep...only difference is a slightly (i mean very slight) higher torque rating...for a fwy wood, this is ok

Thank you everyone for the posts.

I was looking up Graffalloy Pro Launch Red's on eBay and I can get one here shipped for 24$, and that is a great deal in my mind. I was wondering if there is any other pieces that I need to buy for my coach to install it on my club (Burner 18* 5 wood), or can I just hand him the shaft and pay for the service?

Oh and what is the Ben Sayer deal with these shafts???? Is this better/worse than a different Pro Launch Red??? Thanks.

He should have everything handy if he has a shop. Why not call him up and ask? Think that would be best course of action. I would think the coach would toss the shaft in there free of cost but maybe I'm expecting too much.

Let me know how this works out. I may either reshaft my Ping G15 or the same head as yours.

Thank you everyone for the posts.

if ur coach has a proper shop, just hand him the shaft, old club and a new grip and ur good to go

i am not sure if you have a TP or the regular Burner tho if you have the TP the tip size is .335 if it is a regular, the tip size is .350....that is ok your coach SHOULD have a shim he can put on the PL Red, as it is a .335 and it will work just fine IMO buy the .335 anyways, b/c if you dont like the shaft, a .335 tip is easier to sell again, as more clubs are this size, than a .350 the fwy shaft you are looking at on ebay is a "made for" shaft, meaning it was made for the Ben Sayers line of clubs i have looked at the specs and compared them to the regular shafts and there is very little different typically the made for shafts have a slightly higher torque rating, to fit more of a general population, but in this case the difference is minimal Regular PL Red Specs: 3.2 torque, 71-74 weight, low flight Ben Sayers PL Red Specs: 3.5 torque, 71-74 weight, low flight IMHO still a great shaft for the price and will do the trick nicely (at least it does for me) i play all my shafts logo down and no one has ever asked me to inspect my shafts or said a word about it...99% of people dont have a clue anyways i have tried exotic shafts, mid grade shafts blah blah blah i used to use the made for Mizuno Fubuki shafts in my MP Titanium 5w and F50 3w - they WERE MONEY! some say that they are not as good.......well compare the specs and actually try em out before you beak too too much

Did you ever think about a steel shaft? I am an old fart and am scoring better after putting light weight steel shafts in everything but the driver.
