This Christmas I am buying myself a little present and I'm sending the Circa #3 to the putter spa. Before I do, does anyone know if the Pro Platinum finish has any effect on the overall feel of the putter. I personally love the feel of the carbon steel and the shallow milling of the Circa Line. PP finish looks better IMO but it's not worth it if there are noticeable changes. Any insight would be great, thanks!

restoration, custom stamping, personalization, loft/lie adjustments, weight adjustment, paint-fill changes, re gripping, re shafting, etc....

Is it worth the money? I think the restoration is worth every penny because I don't care how careful you are, normal wear and tear takes its toll over time.

Anyone gaming a pro platinum finished Circa?

ey? I think the restoration is worth every penny because I don't care how careful you are, normal wear and tear takes its toll over time.

I am considering the exact same thing for my Circa 62 #2 Charcoal Mist. My daughter got a hold of it and scratched it up a bit.

The PP is a plating, so it will make the putter face slightly harder than the gun blue or CM finishes. The milling marks on the putter face will no longer be as visible either. If that is important to you, you may want to refinish with the CM. However, I think the PP looks cooler than the CM expecially if you chose the right color scheme with the paintfill that comes free with the restoration. I have softer Camerons already, so the PP restoration would be a welcome variation.

While I don't have experience with the PP finish on a Circa #3, my father had his studio select refinished with a PP finish and I could not tell the difference. I have given though to doing the same thing with my Circa #3 but I like the blued finish so much that I'm just going to take extra care and keep it with that finish.

I have two mid 1990's Scotty Newport 2 terylliums and a Bettinardi that I am getting customized. Nickel plate and copper plate most likely. Prices at the SC Custom Shop are crazy. I looked into sending my putters there but decided against it. I am sending mine to Lamont Mann of Mannkrafted and Kevin Colbert of Putterplating. You guys should consider sending an email to these guys before deciding on the custom shop. You may be pleased with what you find. They are well known and can do anything and it will be cheaper than the custom shop. Kevin did my custom Rife Antigua and Lamont is making me a prototype Sunset Beach putter now. He makes all the Sunset Beach putters. I have a thread here (last week) with tons of pics. Titled, "Masonboro----->Baldhead", and you can see my putter he is making there. These guys have mad skills. They can email you pics of various finishes and such. Some pics are on their websites below as well.

Here is a link to some pics of my putter Lamont is making. He is Golfuzme on Puttertalk and Kevin is Putterplating. Both are top shelf.

Are you sure it was a Studio Select he had refinished in Pro Platinum? Pro Platinum is a plating, but the big thing is that it can only be applied to carbon steel. It cannot be applied the stainless steel, and seeing as the Studio Select line is made from stainles steel, it isn't possible that his putter is a Studio Select.

As for the original topic, about a year ago I had a TeI3 Newport restored and refinished in Pro Platinum at the Custom Shop. I never weighed the head but if there is any weight loss from the restoration it's small enough that you won't notice it at all. As for the feel of PP, it definitely has a harder feel as well as a more pronounced clicky sound. The difference is not huge, but it's enough that you'll notice it easily.

I've got a Pro Platinum Newport 2, it is an original PP putter made from Carbon Steel. The feel is a very nice balance of feel and feedback, the 'click' is very very subtle. It's noticably softer than my old Newport Stainless, or the Redwood I currently have.

Thanks for the feedback! It may sound nit-picky but that little bit of difference makes me think twice about it. I may stick with keeping the original Charcoal mist. It's probably all psychological but with putting isn't everything? Circa #3 is bar-none the greatest putter ever. haha

I have read, and heard that the click is noticeable, but no much more than noticing the difference between putting with a Pro V1, Srixon Z Star or TM Penta as compared to the next level of cover softness, such as the Titleist NXT Tour, Srixon AD333, etc.

Another item to think about is the "plating" effect. Should you nick the plating and expose the carbon steel underneath, it will begin to rust in that small spot without proper care.

Lastly, if you want your Cameron to hold it's value (or even increase in value for some models) ABSOLUTELY do NOT get a finish/plating/have anything done by anyone other than the Cameron Custom Shop. The value plummets severely. Cameron will apply the Custom Shop Stamp on all putters changing from Gun Blue, Oil Can, C Mist etc to Pro Platinum to help your putter hold value as the work was done by Cameron. You are able to select the location of the stamp when you order. The stamp is free, as are many grips (Winn grips, leather grips, etc are pricey). Some headcovers are free (same as original cover or other basic covers) and some are more than $50 (custom shop headcovers).

Many people pay for pricey accessories (grip, headcover) and then turn right around and sell them at a big profit to help pay for the restoration.

After stamps, finishes, maybe a headcover, you can get north of $300 quickly.

(waits for gasping noise and pending "that's crazy posts)

my question is why would someone want to get their putter plated in that pro platinum crap, lol. stick to the original finish or something better than a hard plating

Because some people prefer the look and feel of it. I'm guessing you've never tried it, and are spouting off baseless statements again.

BTW, your putter is stainless steel, and not the softer carbon steel that the OP was asking about.

fair enough, thats why I was asking. I just didnt understand why someone would want to put a hard plating over expensive soft metal thats used for a soft feel. The metal on my scotty is super soft and I cant imagine plating it in some hard stuff. I was just wondering the benefits of it, i mean if scotty cameron shop offers it then it must be good and im being serious, lol

well since you changed your post I guess Il add some to mine. My putter is still extremely soft, I dont care that its not the carbon steel that the OP has on his, doesnt matter to why I wouldnt want to cover my putter, which is extremely soft, in a hard plating. If some people like the hard feel and the click, then ok but baseless statement? what? lol

Pro Platinum is NOT hard. Its hard-er. Your Stainless Steel with the GSS insert is nice, but not as soft as the old school Carbon Steel putters, such as the Studio Design and the Oil Cans. Why would someone want to change to Pro P? The Carbon Steel putters are indeed difficult to take care of, prone to rusting, etc. Pro P puts and end to all that. Golfers in the North, northeast, northwest, even in Florida during rainy springs, not to mention those on the British Isles might love the liminted care a Pro P finish provides. I almost did it last winter for my Studio Design.

A Gun Blue Coronado with a Titleist NXT ball compared to a Pro P Coronado with a Srixon Z Star or Pro V1? The second would "feel" softer.

i see thank you for the informative and appropriate response. I guess what Im taking from it, is that the people that would get it done in pro p do it for more of a long term protection and easy maintanence than anything else.

From ScottyCameron.com

Pro Platinum and Charcoal Mist Finishes: (Pro Platinum, Mil-Spec, Bulls Eye, '07-'08 Circa '62 and '07-'08 Red X models) Pro Platinum and Charcoal Mist finishes are each a nickel-based plating that Scotty has used on carbon steel, as well as stainless steel. They are highly durable, low-maintenance finishes that will resist corrosion as long as they are stored clean and dry. You should still treat these finishes with care to avoid dings, which can become areas for rust to develop.

Info on other finishes here.....
