Like the title states. Whats the shortest club you've hit into a par 5 for your 2nd shot? I've had a pw in hand before on a short 470 yd par 5 before.

Hmm, thats tough, i got to think about it.

The most recently would be two years ago, a 482 par 5 thats all up hill. Usually i have 200 out, hitting my 4 iron which goes 220 and thats pretty much center of the green. But in this golf scramble i hit a driver ended up at the 155 marker, which left me a 9 iron into the green.

This query is hinky.

On one course, during one round, I went for the green on all four par 5s, but 2nd hole stands out.

Hole #2. 549 yards. Lob wedge.

Dogleg right with trees that can be carried (~260 carry to the rough and > 290 to the fairway). I made a mistake and pushed my shot farther right than I ever have. My ball was on the cart path, 70 yards out. Not sure how far it travelled on the path. It was a total fluke and to be honest, I'm not sure why that part of course isn't OB. My ball flew the #8 tee box. My drop was in the rough. Flubbed the approach to the front apron and got up and down for birdie.

Pw which was also coincidentally my first eagle. The hole was a joke though. It was a 450 yard par 5 dog leg left that was straight down hill (and I mean way down hill) It was links course and I didn't even cut the dog leg (and I think if I did I would have been 50 yards out) I hit it wide right and the ball just rolled down to about 130. I hit a pw to 6 inches, turned to my friend and said I think this is going to be my first eagle and I just barely made the putt.

My home course has a par 4 that is 460 so it felt especially cheap. :)

One that sticks out to me that happened this summer in a practice round for Mid-Am qualifying. Marin CC, hole #6 is a 480 yd par 5, pretty flat but the wind was going with us a little. Pounded my drive and had a 9 iron left in from about 155, flying straight at the flag but bounced over the green where I was able to get up and down pretty easily. In the actual qualifying, didn't go quite the same, hit my drive in a creek that ran down the right, dropped, hit it up by the green where it almost bounced on the cartpath OB, couldn't get up and down, ended up with bogey.

Well it's cheap but I've had a sand wedge in. Slightly downhill 510 yard par 5. Hit it straight right into the trees, thought I lost my ball, then a playing partner found it out around 400. I'm a long hitter, but nowhere near that long. The ball must have hit the cart path at least twice. It runs through the trees and funnels out onto the fairway. Shortest club on a legit shot is nothing special, I think it was a 6i on a short par 5 where I got all of my driver.

4 iron. The hole was downhill and downwind and I caught it really well.

Pulled it left into some bushes, chunked it short of the green, down in par.

8 iron. 520 yards, 40 mph tailwind, drive was 324 yards GPS measured, approach was to about 12 feet. Missed the eagle putt.

9 iron on a 518 yard par 5. I don't know what happen with the drive, if I really hit it that far (the fairways where rock hard) or if I hit a sprinkler head and got a good bounce...

This year at a scramble I was playing with a big hitter and on a 518yd par 5 his drive left us at 133 from the pin which with the wind we had at our back i was a pw away from planting a 7ft eagle putt which we all missed and finished the hole with a disappointing birdie !!

I've been left with a sand wedge once at a par 5 on a course in my area. It's only 410 yards, what a joke. My normal club selection is driver, 8 iron but when it was playing downwind and my drive hit the cart path leaving me with 85 yards to go. Missed the eagle...

There is a par five at my old home course with really hardpan fairways where it's not uncommon to get 60 or 70 yards of roll. It is 449 yards long, but I regularly hit driver, 7 iron.

I've hit a par-5 in two exactly once in my career. I forget the exact distance, but I hit a 4-iron second shot (missed the eagle putt by about 8 inches short, made the bird). Went back to the course 3 weeks later, the hole had become a par-4 (with the tees moved considerably up).

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
