So I went to practice my putting today because I got a new one last night and was excited to try it out. Well my course officially closed yesterday (first snowfall of the year this morning) and I went anyways figured the practice green was just cut but there would be no pins in. So I started putting and was not doing well to say the least, the first 5 or 10 minutes I did alright but eventually I could not get the distance right. I was coming up short and pulling a ton of puts. I am hoping that was because of the cold, 30 degrees when I checked my phone. Can this possibly be because of the cold weather or did I get the wrong putter?

here's the 3rd option.
Is it you?

The greens will be slower but you should know to hit your putts a little firmer after 10 minutes of coming up short.

So

To the OP, it could be both the putter and the cold. Your body could be stiff in the cold and causing you to yank putts. Try to stay loose. Did you change the style of putter?

Greens in winter are a tricky thing.

Last week they were slow as anything and yesterday they were frozen and playing like glass.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

It could most definitely be me, however two days earlier I was using the putter indoors and though I know astroturf has a much different texture than real grass I was doing fine. I figured my speed could be wrong but a straight put on turf should be straight on a level green. Anyways I was more wondering if extremely cold greens have caused anyone else's putting to decline, not necessarily just mine.

I used to work at the course in high school and knew they were not opening today, I just drove into the parking lot and walked up to the green near the clubhouse. There were some maintenance boys around but they did not bother me. I'm sure I will only be able to do this for a few days as the green length will eventually become to long with no attention.

If your talking Whitney Farms, I don't think that green will be doing any more growing until April.

If the greens are frozen, all kinds of weird stuff will happen. I think a frozen green is completely unplayable -- much more than a green that needs a mow.

Very true, the grass doesn't grow in my yard throughout the winter I'm not quite sure why I assumed the green would keep growing.

Couldnt you be doing serious damage to the greens playing on them in that temperature?

I always assumed when we have frost delays it was done so we wouldnt damage the course.

Thats what I thought too. I've been frost delayed twice this week. Saturday the course was delayed a 1.5 hrs and tuesday it was delayed for 3.5 hrs. I hope I dont get delayed tom.

I'm not positive but I don't think I was doing any damage. There was no frost on the green and I was wearing a pair of Sperry loafers. But I could be wrong.

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
