Passed the PGA Pre-Qualifying Test

Prior to becoming an Apprentice in the PGA program, you must pass the PAT, pass a pre-qualifying test, and do a few other things (largely show that you're employed). The three items on which you're tested are:

1) Introduction to the PGA PGM Program
2) PGA History and Constitution
3) The Rules of Golf

The first and last ones are fairly easy. The second one worried me a bit - you have to know what the Board of Control does, how the Board of Directors are assembled, etc.

The Qualifing test will consist of a total of 75 questions and will cover the three qualifying courses. The time allowed for the test is 90 minutes and the passing score is 70%. You should bring a clean, unmarked, unhighlighted USGA Rules of Golf book to the test session.



I've always been a great student. High A grades, set the curve all the time, etc. I was a bit worried about this test, but then I realized "I barely have to get a D to pass" (69% was a D in high school). Turns out the side of me that said "don't worry" was right. I passed with 97% accuracy, missing only two questions.

So now I'll enter Level 1 - as soon as the PGA fixes my online account to properly reflect my status - and will look to take the Level 1 Seminars sometime this coming February. Yay.

Congrats, this is great!

That's two parts.

"Largely" meant that made up the bulk of the "other things" you had to do. "Employed" means that you have to have a full-time job where at least 50% of your time is spent doing stuff the PGA considers golf-related. Golf-related for an assistant pro would be things like running tournaments or giving lessons. Golf-related for me, as a B-6 (instructor) apprentice, largely involves giving and assisting with lessons.

Congrats on passing "Q-Test".  So far, I am 2 for 2 passing PAT.  O for 1 passing this test.  I am one of two people to pass the PAT at this course over the last two years.  That's almost 50 players.  My current employment is turf care at Bay Point Golf Resort in Panama City Beach, Fl.  I just returned to PCB after managing a golf club in south Georgia for over two years.  I have prfessional status with the USGA, and have been teaching for ten years.

Did you use any outside resources to study for the qualifying test, or did you strickly use the books they gave you?

Back in the day (1992-3) when I was a PGA Apprentice the only requirements (that I remember) were that you had to have the employment piece, a Class A PGA professional sponsor you, and to pay your sectional dues.  Once you did that you had an interview with the head of the section which sounds similar to #1 and then could start your program.  I think that the way they do it now is much better by having you take the P.A.T. before you are eligible to apprentice.  As I recall, we had a time limit in which to get that done.

Congrats on passing the test...it doesn't surprise me that you did so well as you are a student of the game and through your contributions to golf you have probably forgotten more than most ever learn.

Nothin'. And I mostly just studied the day and night before... kinda felt like even that day and night was a waste. You don't need a very high score and the entire Rules section is open book so you can't really miss any of those answers.

Ugh, Level 1. I've been in that for faaaaaaaar too long. Congrats though, being in the PGA is a great thing. I remember PGA meetings being so much fun, with a large amount of camaraderie. (whoop just realized what you said about the dates,) you're in the "extended program" just like me.

I don't think I'm in the extended program. You have two years from the time you first enter to finish level 1. I won't be at the end of year 1 until next summer.

      Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.

      Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group.       I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
