Keep GPS or get rangefinder

Cell phone service has nothing to do with GPS reception from a dedicated GPS unit. It only affects people using cell phone golf GPS apps. Keep the GPS dude and tell your lady thanks.

blkjazz is correct.  Cell phones connect to ground-based towers and if there's not one within a fairly short distance, there won't be coverage.  GPS, on the other hand, receives signals from satellites.  The presence of a cell tower is irrelevant.  GPS will give you pretty good coverage anywhere on a golf course.

Personally I'd stick with the GPS.

I think you should be grateful for what you got.

cell is always with me, it works well and there are some $2 apps in the droid market that work as good as the golflogiz app i have. if you use the one in the carts most of the time, id go with an app on your phone.

Can you use a golf lase rangefinder for hunting?

Rangefinder. Shell out the extra cash.

Ditto.... Regardless of which gadget you wanted or think you need. Your girl friend, partner, somebody who cares for you spent the time and energy to get you a gift. Appreciate it.

Agreed on this... personally I'd want the laser rangefinder as well but a GPS really isn't that bad.  On top of that, it probably will be better than a hunting range finder for you.  The hunting range finders lack the ability to pick up small objects (like a flag stick) and will give you the yardage to larger objects (such a house or tree) behind the green... this is why the golf ones are more money.  At the worst you end up keeping the GPS and pick up a laser somewhere down the road and then you'll have the best of both worlds.

As for gps or range finder, I decided on gps. I got the Golf logix unit and it is awesome. I am sure the Upro is great too. I clip it on my bag and look at it when I pull clubs. I always have the yardage I am looking for. I can measure drives, other shots, etc.. with the click of a button. No gadgets to play with or keep up with. I just turn it on, it chooses my course, and I look at it when I need a yardage to the green. It shows front/center/back yardages from any location. Not sure what more one could need in order to take the shot. Point being, enjoy your new gps and then decide later if you even want a range finder. The answer may be different than it is today.

id keep the gps, as said before they have nothing to do with cell phones! plus with gps you get yardage without clear line of sight which you need for a range finder!

GPS for sure....how many times I have waited for a rangefinder guy to make sure he is locked on the pin and not the tree behind it!  Look for center of green yardage and pick a club that will hit it halfway from the center to the back edge. Most golfers never hit it far enough and most don't hit it the exact yardage even 60% of the time.

Did you actually read his post?  He said that his biggest concern is that there is no cell service at one of the courses he plays most regularly.  That means that the app would probably be useless there. 

I agree with what most people have said.   Appreciate the gift and the thought.

Then he needs a decent rangefinder.  If it has a logic circuit like my Bushnell Tour V2 it takes less than 5 seconds to get a perfect lock on the flag. 

I've seen the same sort of delays with guys paging through all the screens on their GPS trying to find this or that feature.  Either type of rangefinder can be misused.  I can check the GPS and then take a sighting with my laser, pick a club and be ready to play, all in under 30 seconds.

I'm still a rangefinder fan, wholeheartedly. Well, not whole, but about 85/15... GPS is too slow, too inaccurate, requires too much charging, etc.

Kiss your GF on the cheek, say thank you and use the GPS.

Finally, i cant get money from the store she bought it in, only store credit.  And since she bought it in a golf store, with no hunting rangefinders, i could only get a $300 rangefinder so i'd have to shell out an extra $150.

 

 Maybe return it and get a new club or 2 and ask for a rangefinder for my birthday in May?  IDK what to do... please help.

Keep the GPS if you want to keep her happy this Christmas. Return the GPS and get the thing you wanted, and specifically asked for, if you want her to be happy for years to come. If she'd listened more to you and less to the salesperson in the golf shop, you'd have a rangefinder. Your request was pretty clear and simple. If you pretend to be happy she'll either eventually see through your facade (especially when it never gets used) and think you don't respect her OR you'll find yourself making specific gift requests every year that turn into something close but in the end useless. You gotta nip this in the bud. And yes, I'm totally serious. Some women are notoriously bad at buying gifts. "A traffic light/ lamp? Really? This made you think of me how?"
