I'm looking for an upgrade set of clubs for my dad who will be 55 next year. He's been playing the game for about a year and a half and is on the verge of breaking 100 for the first time. He currently has a set of Wilson Firestiks that have graphite shafts. He purchased it as a complete set, so it's a beginner's set of clubs. They're nice clubs and have done very well, but I want to reward him for his upcoming achievement by buying him a new set of clubs that he can use today's technology with.

I've researched the Adams A2 OS clubs, the Nike OSS, and the Wilson Di7 clubs, among a few others. I was hoping for some suggestions and any personal experiences from some of the players out there. This way, I can take him shopping to see what he likes best and then have him fit. He also really likes to hit the 3/4 iron hybrid that is in his current set. He probably hits his drive around a 200 carry on average and his 5 iron is his 150 club. I'm hoping once he gets over that wall of 100, then he'll regain his excitement for the game and a new set of clubs. He's sort of hit a point of frustration because he gets so close and then does poorly the next day.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

I used to have a set of Tour Edge Bazooka JMax QL irons with graphite shafts that would be perfect for a senior. I think they were $300 brand new from Ebay and were 3H, 4H, 5 - PW irons.

I agree either Adams or Tour Edge would be a good choice. I play Tour Edge, I hit my shots a little further, about 10 yards on the 5 iron and 15 on the driver, so you will have to check whether he is regular like me or A flex. I have a friend who also plays Tour Edge(all ironwoods until the wedge) and a couple of my relatives play the Adams OS2s. All are happy. I find the look of the Adams 5 and 6 hybrids a little off putting, and since I can still get my 5 and 6 up high when I need to I prefer Tour Edge, also a great warranty.

Thanks for the input. I didn't realize Tour Edge was such a reputable brand. I suppose I considered them a lower tier brand that was more concerned about affordability. I did check them out and I must say I'm very impressed with their stuff.

I'm not sure about flex, but I suppose that's what a club fitter is good for. I know he's had some back problems over the last few years and I'd like to get him a club that he can hit just as far without having to exert too much effort, yet I don't really want the club to be whippy either. He seems happy with the regular flex of his current clubs, but as the years go on it would be nice if he could stay with a certain set of clubs. At least until he breaks 90, then I promised him I would get him a top notch set of clubs to use if he wanted them. Of course, by then he may not want to change.

If you have any more suggestions or testimonials, please pass them along. He and I are both engineers, so the more input we get, the easier it is to make a decision.
