So, just thought I would share my experience. Hopefully it helps someone else out also.

So ive been seriously struggling with my putting recently. And in all honesty ive never really been a good putter. Although I practice putting frequently, I have never really gotten a good rythm going or felt very confident... until now... (Big Smile)

Ive also never been fitted for a putter... Until now...

I have used several types of putters, and thought I was playing the right one when I bought my Scotty Cameron. This has absolutely nothing to do with makes or models of putters, but everything to do with weight and feel. My recent frustration forced me to look for something else, as lately I have been 3 putting like a mofo. Even on the green in regulation, and still 3 putting! God it was frustrating! I think I may have finally figured out why...

While at one of my local golf shops I finally decided to ask a "salesman" some questions. Generally I stay away from those guys cuz they always want to sell you something wether you need it or not. Anyways, after talking to the guy I finally figured out that I was playing a completely wrong putter style. Not in shape, but in balance! I never paid attention to any of that. But its been biting me in the butt! All this time I have ben playing a tow balanced putter. And not only a toe balanced putter, but one of the biggest, heaviest, toe balanced putter. A Scotty Cameron Newport 2.6, with 20 gram weights!! Its crazy to think that all this time ive been hurting myself!

After the guy evaluated my putting stroke he steered my in the direction of a face balanced putter. I tried about 5 different putters, and it was amazing how well I could putt each one of them in comparison. Pulling the exact same putter I was using out of the case and giving it a try just to see, I could tell right away I had the wrong one. Looks like Im a face balanced putter guy, not a toe balanced. I have a very straight stroke, and my finish is barely closed if at all. Once I tried a face balanced putter I could feel again. I had distance control (which ive been really struggling with). And the confidence those two things brings is second to none. Im not saying Im fixed completely or now Im a great putter, but at least ive taken a huge step in the right direction and not continuing to step on my "toes"... get it... Hahaha, sorry. Bad joke...

I narrowed it down to 3 Scotty Camerons and a Nike Method...

Looks like ill be going to the Nike method boys. It feels amazing!!! Its not hype. It truly is innovative and works exactly like they say it will. You can see the ball start with top spin, and you can see the Scotty Cameron putters skip or backspin then roll forward. Try one!

Should be common sense, but it isn't. Who wouldn't want to be playing the RIGHT club that you use EVERY hole? Everyone right? Nope. Driver fitting? Of course (and you maybe use it 10-13x a round), irons, yep. But never the putter.

Funny you'll see a ton of high and mid cappers playing Scottys and the low cappers playing whatever works best. I like the method alot, don't like the price tag. If I see one end up in the used bin I'll grab it up.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

Was fitted for an Edel putter a few years ago - it's a fairly extensive fitting -- and haven't looked at another putter since that time -- saved a lot of money.

Method rolls it okay, but I hate the feel of it. I've only hit the Anser-style models, as lefty offerings are limited and I don't like Rossie-style putters and that's the only other offering.

I am playing the Ghost now because it rolls it well and I like the insert that TM uses...I have always got a great roll with it. I was waiting for TM to produce a putter, with the ASGI insert, that I liked and the Ghost mallet is it. Idiot-proof to align (although it closes HARD like many mallets do) and great feel. The basic Ghost blade, however, is junk. The higher-end blade doesn't look like they'll offer it to lefties. Besides, I like the ghost. I've only used it on the course once, and I putted very consistently. With more course practice, I think it'll work swimmingly. didn't get fitted for it, but did get the tow lowered a bit. I really need a 34.5 inch putter shaft...but just end up getting the toe lowered.

i also found out the hard way that balance makes a huge difference, even in different toe balanced putters. the first quality putter i bought was a studio style newport plumber neck. i assumed that since my stroke was inside to inside that any toe balanced putter would work. feel was excellent and i got a good deal on a very nice used one so all was good. after a while i noticed i was pushing quite a few putts to the right. well the studio style has a 45* toe hang, not to mention i was choking down slightly on a 35". i decided to try a few different putters and found that the ones with greater toe hang were easier to release the putter head, no more pushes! also the 33" fits much better. picked up the rife cayman brac, slapped a lamkin 3rd gen and those par savers are starting to sink now.

Kinda funny you say that... I mean we will go spend $300+ on a driver we only hit "10-13x's" yet we wont spend it on a putter... Hahaha

"... putt for dough... " At least that's how I justify it since I play in some tournaments now.

I am with you. He was just making a sweeping and pretty much untrue generalization about people who buy Scotty Camerons. Happens all the time on these forums. The truth is, you see more mid to high handicappers with $300-$500 drivers and any ole' putter in the bag than you see them with Camerons. The low handicappers are the ones buying the better putters because they realize how important look and feel is to putting.

I'd think how you aim the putter would come first, followed by weight, feel, balance, and length, etc., so you can judge speed/control.

How the putter looks to youΒ affects how well you aim it. And feel is the catch-all phrase for balance, weight and length.

Low handicappers play whatever works. I've seen scratch golfers with everything from an old $20 Ping Anser they found in the used bin to a $350 byron. But you won't find any mid handicapper using that, they need top of the line (9 times out of 10)

I prefer my $70 Cleveland classic to my $299 Scotty.

Thanks for clearing that up.

But I can't go with your first sentence if you mean, "if the putter looks good (inlcuding offset and aim lines), I'll aim it well."

If you want, try this to test your theory -- get a SeeMore Triangulator, get about 6-8 feet away, get a ball and aim your putter at a straight putt to the hole. Now remove the ball, have a friend take the Triangulator, put it against your aimed putter face, and then with the string, see if you are aimed at the hole.

A better test is the Edel test that uses a laser pointer, black backdrop, and a mirror pasted to your putter face -- you can see not only that you're aimed left or right of the hole, but that your loft is off -- too high or too low by the height of the laser beam bouncing off the mirror.

I've witnessed several Edel fittings -- lots of guys aim best with putters that don't look good to them...
