With an opening round of 67 JD looked like he was striking the ball well.

He posted 7 birdies and 2 bogeys.

When he was interviewed, he said that he and his caddy decided that he was going to hit driver all the way around the course as he would rather hit a short iron from the difficult rough rather than a long iron from that same rough. Interesting idea, but apparently worked for him as he scored well considering that he only hit the fairway 1/2 the time.

Maybe I just like to cheer for the underdog, but I would love it if he could just place in the top 3.

What do you think? Does Big John have a chance of posting some more good scores this week?

His strategy and execution of it bested all others on the south course today. So thats is a win for us JD fans I suppose. You have to find the positives where you can when you are a JD fan. LoL A top 3 would be phenomenal but not likely, odds are probably better he shoots a 75 then a 65 tomorrow. so I am cheering him on for the win. He is my guy regardless.

When a company makes a club in the USA I will proudly display their brand here. All of mine were made in china by somebody making $2 a day. Shame on you Mr club manufacture.

I believe John Daly has enough raw talent to always be a threat of posing very low scores.  I am rooting for him as I know he has struggled with some demons and hope he has bested them.

Isn't this just his "MO"? The guy fires off a low score as he has done countless times only to follow it up with a 78 or something like that. I don't wish anything bad on him or anybody else for that matter but if the guy is still around come Sunday it would be quite a story but until he does it's just another reminder of what could have been for the guy.

The longer it takes for him to spontaneously combust, the more people get to see it. Win win.

Can't hope for him anymore...now he is mad that he wasn't given sponsors' exemptions at the Hope and Phoenix...the guy doesn't get it. Past behavior counts with some people...he shouldn't be a hero...he sure isn't a role model for our junior golfers

Good player at times? ...Yes...Good example at times?,....No

I agree mostly, though not for the same reasons. I'm really just done caring about the guy. For me, the worst thing is that he just pisses away his chances. There are billions of people in the world who have it worse off than Daly, and those are the people I would rather feel bad for. I don't care about what kind of a roll model he is, but to have had so much talent at something and to be in the spot he was, with millions of dollars and the admiration of millions of people, for him to have thrown that away loses my following. Not that that matters to him, but whatever.

Partly why I like him, he is far from perfect, he does the wrong things, he sez the wrong things, he is anti establishment. He shows his emotions for better or worse. And sure he has blown it in the past and yet he has not given up. Still out there trying to live the dream. I like that. And will pull for him as long as he is out trying to make it happen. I am a fan of guys with charter and adversity , for me guys like Fred couples are so boring I can't stand to watch.

Didn't get a chance to watch any of the play today - just found out that JD hung in there - tied for third.

For those who want to see him blow it, this should build the suspense.

For others of us who like to see  "the guy who made all the mistakes" have a moment of redemption, this was a good day.

Then, to make the day even better - my man Bubba Watson finally started to play like a champion, shooting the low round of the day 7 below par.

WTH!

Just now watching today's action on the DVR and can't believe JD missed that birdie putt on 9 by a fraction. I count 3 birdie puts he missed by just a fraction. That an that 4 putt. Arrrg. And yet he is still near the top of the leader board. A very good 2 days of golf for JD He sounded like he is in a good frame of mind in his interview. Bodes well for the next round. That 4 putt could have seriously derailed anybody, especially an emotional player like JD

Yup.  Instead of being grateful for any sponser exemptions, he compains about the few he didn't get.  Glad they pulled his show.  His whining got boring real fast.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
