I bought a used set of Titleist 704 cb's a few weeks ago.

Today I went to golf galaxy to get the loft/lie adjusted and found out they were 1/2 inch longer than standard.

Right now I do not have enough money to get them shortened.  Only enough to get the lies adjusted

The guy got me to hit balls off an impact board while choked up 1/2 on the club, because that would be how long they are in the future when I get them shortened to normal.

My question is...will I be alright choking down on the clubs for a while until I get around to shortening them?  The lies will be adjusted to me hitting shots choked down 1/2 inch.

I assume it shouldn't really matter....If the clubs are 1/2 inch long and the lies are adjusted to me choking down 1/2 inch..everything should be fine?  I don't really have the 100$ to blow right now on new grips and shortening

4 words. new grips. pipe cutter. lose the grips you got on there, pull out a pipe cutter, trim the butts a half inch, put new grips on and call it a day for under 80 bucks.

screw what up? lol it's taking a half inch off each butt end. comon man i KNOW you can measure a half inch and mark it with a pen lol. being serious...it's not that hard. takes all of 10 seconds for each shaft, i think you could get it done in less than an hour (trimming and taping/gripping)

highly recommend both ends of the spectrum price wise: high side - New Decade Multicompounds...lower side - Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G's...

pipe cutter is all of 4 bucks at any home improvement store, lemme know how it comes out...oh, and get some good sand paper to work on the ends of those shafts...don't want burrs or anything sharp on there after you cut em.

I like my Tour Wraps (not sure if they're 2G or not) and all, but I'd be inclined just to choke down for a while.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

If you were fitted for these clubs, i.e. swingweight, etc., the swingweight on each club will now change (feel). It's not an across the board "equal" change, because 1/2" off the butt end coupled with headweight, etc. will vary the swingweight (feel) on each club. If you take off the grips and change grips (different weights, size, etc.) the swingweight will change, also. Ask the person who fitted you for these clubs for advice. But if you were fitted properly, then the clubs wouldn't be 1/2" too long, would they?

If you bought them "off the rack," even though the swingweight will change, you weren't fitted properly for these clubs anyways.

The clubs are 1/2" longer than standard, how do you know you "need" them 1/2" shorter? Just because some guy at a club shop said they were off? Did you measure them yourself? For accurate feel club-to-club (which is what swingweighting is), maybe 3/8" is best, or 1/4"? Moral: Get fitted by a professional before you cut anything off those clubs.

Everyone who owns clubs should learn how to re-grip their own clubs. It's not rocket science and there's a ton of "how to's" on line you can download. Golf Galaxy (Golfworks) sells grips, Golfsmith is the best, for selection on line. Any pro shop will sell you grips.

I make all my own clubs:

Definitely regrip. All you need is solvent, grip tape and a utility knife. Golfsmith sells grip kits with everything you need. As was mentioned, look up a how to video on YouTube. New grips will make your clubs feel new. Also, great choice on the irons, I play the same ones and I absolutely love them.

I apologize for my harsh post above ... comprehension 101 should have taught me to read your post thoroughly ... "I bought a set of USED CLUBS ..."

In any event, if you were taking them in for loft/lie adjustments, have them swingweighted on a scale in the store, as well. Remember that cutting 1/2" off the butt end affects swingweight more than 1/2" off the tip end and raises issues with bend point and flex of the club.

Again, the moral is the same ... have the clubs fitted for you, your swing. Before you cut off anything from the butt end.

Again, I apologize for my poor choice of tone in my earlier post.

All the above knowledge is well reasoned and better founded than mine, but I will add a couple thoughts.

A half inch is about the width of your pinky finger. Yes it will change the swingweight and more importantly I think the flex, but I doubt if you could tell the feel. If money is an issue right now, I think I would have the lie adjusted and choke down, or even have the lie adjusted where you don't choke down if it doesn't change your swing plane adversely.

I would like to be able to do my own grips, and if I could invest in proper equipment, I might have a go.  I have done a couple of simple wrap style and they turned out ok.  I am fortunate in that there is a local guy who has proper equipment to align the grip consistently and he will do a set for $25 plus the cost of the chosen grip, so I usually wimp out and get him to do it.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

As long as the butt end of the club isn't interfering with your swing, you should be fine choking down on the club.

Another option for shortening clubs (for the more adventurous) which I have done when I didn't want to take my grips off for whatever reason, is to pull all the shafts and rotate them.  Put the wedge shaft into the 9 iron, 9 iron shaft into the 8 and so on.  Then you take the last shaft from the longest club, and put that in your shortest club and then you just have to remove that grip and cut that last shaft down to the proper length.  This method costs you some epoxy, one grip and some ferrules (unless you can salvage these during the shaft removal).
