Newbie to the site here  I was playing my home course today as our highschool season had just started, and on saturday i scored consistent 38's (3over) on the front nine twice (its what we play in matches), and today I couldnt get it right for some reason and shot a 49! I was shanking the ball, pushing and cutting the ball really bad, and just couldnt really get a grip on wat was happening. Yet I come home and hit 4 perfect straight shots in my yard....Could my hands being to close to my body result in all of my errors

You should post a video if you want help. It is really hard to say from your short description.

I will add that hitting good shots in your backyard is not like playing. There are no hazards no pressure nothing. You should play as much as you can and make it competitive. Play for sodas with the other guys on your team on practice days. Put pressure on yourself so when the real pressure comes in a tournament you are ready.

Depends,

If your bringing your hands out towards the ball you'll bring the hozel into play. Which can be caused by thinking you need to extend your hands outward, or your backside is getting closer to the ball and you clear your thighs the hands will move closer to the ball. You could be standing to close, keep those hands below the shoudlers or just out infront of the shoudlers. Also an over the top swing can bring the hozel in play as well, but mostly having the hands getting closer to the ball.

Like the guy above says I wouldnt mess with the setup unless you see a video or have a pro look at you.  Most high handicappers don't shank the ball, they hit on the toe or chunk it.  Better players tend to shank ocasionally.  A shank indicates you are basically swinging on an inside out path (good) but your hands thru impact rode up a little high or outside (bad).  Look at Jim Furyk, his hands almost hit his thighs on the way thru.  Golf is a game of opposites.  "Assuming" your posture is reasonably correct, don't stand further away.  Look at yourself DTL in a full lenght mirror and compare your posture to any pro that fits your body type.  If it looks OK don't screw with it.

since its the start of the season you're probably tight and just a bit out of sync.

In my lesson yesterday we worked on bringing my hand closer into my body, especially the right arm.  We worked on the feeling that my right arm is attached and the hands are crowding in to my body.

I had been over reaching, and swinging from my toes...
