Went to the golf show today and picked up these "slightly used" Mizuno MP58 irons. They have very little signs of use and have the KBS tour stiff shafts. I've been looking for awhile for these babies and this deal seemed pretty fair. Paid $650 out the door for 4-PW. The 7 iron is the only one that shows any major marks, and it looks like it was scratched up by a brush or something. I think I got a pretty fair deal. What do you guys think?

How is this post relevant to anything?

You're asking if we like them?? My opinion will mean nothing to you, I promise.

How is the photo dated 2008 when you just bought them?

As far as price goes, it looks like you did pretty well.

The MP58 irons come with stock TT DG shafts. Both Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith want $999 for the 3i-PW set: this comes out at about $125 per club w/stock shafts. You got one less club for $699, so you only had to pay $100 a club, with the KBS Tour shafts.

I tapped the Mizuno website looking for info on custom shafts, but could find none. I checked Titleist, however, and T would add an upcharge for the KBS shafts. You possibly got a custom-made set which someone didn't like, or maybe a demo set.

So, you got almost-new clubs for $25 a club under market rate - with premium shafts. Sounds like you did OK on cost.

But Danger, Will Robinson! ...   Mizuno rates MP58 as a club for players in the 0 to 11 HDCP range. So, I am giving you the official Sand Trap Challenge: Take your new tools and carve your way to a single digit HDCP by August.

Let us know how things go.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Damn dude, no need to be such a D-BAG. I was just asking for opinion on the price I paid, I could care less what you think of the clubs. And FYI, the date stamp on the camera doesn't necessarily reflect when the picture was taken. Anyways, yes I am looking forward to improving my game this summer, and hopefully these clubs help out.

Congratulations!  Seeing that they retail for $1200 and you paid $600 and they look almost brand new - you go a he[[ of a deal.

I don't know if you have ever had Mizuno irons before, but you are in for a real treat. I got a set of MP58's last fall and they are awesome sticks. I live in Michigan as well and am anxious to get to the range.

Okay....so, you got a great deal.

Here's the difficult part of the deal. These clubs are player's irons, meaning they are usually enjoyed by players who have handicaps in single digits or close to it. Because these clubs have minimal offset, they will be eager to allow you to turn the ball to the left and to the right, which could be very frustrating if you are trying to hit a straight shot. They also will not be very forgiving, meaning that if you don't hit the ball near the center of the club face, you will feel like you hit a rock and the ball will not fly as well as you would like. The upside of this equation is that you will get good feedback and will know when you made a good swing on the ball. It will expose your swing faults and give you a better opportunity to work on them rather than not feeling the off-center hits and thinking that you are grooving it in the middle.

If you have trouble hitting these, I would encourage you to hold on to them for a while. Know that they are great irons, but may not suit you at this time. It may take a while to get your game up to the point where you will enjoy them. Of course, take them to a pro to get them checked for your stance and height. You can even find out if the shafts are compatible with your game. Mizuno has a club with a computerized shaft that will analyze your swing and recommend a few shafts that suit you. If the shafts are wrong for you, you might as well as plan on trading them in on another set or selling them outright because it isn't cost efficient to reshaft them. Seeing that they are stiff shafts, your swing speed should be pretty fast as well.

In the end, if you determine that you want different irons that will play well for you now, I don't think that you would lose any money on these. You could even probably sell them for more than you paid for them.

Good luck.

P.S. Since they are forged irons, don't use head covers on them because that will encourage rust. Do remember to make sure that they are dry after you play them for that same reason. Also, the typical wire brushes that some golfer use to clean the grooves will scratch them and encourage rust. Be prepared...if they clunk around in your bag, they will show "bag chatter". So, you might want to keep them looking unused until you figure out what you will do with them.

Hope it works out for you. Let us know how it goes for you. And, if you find yourself in mid-Michigan, we might have to play a round with matching irons.

seems like a good price. like WUTiger said, 999 plus tax at golfsmith comes out to almost 1100 dollars. so, 650 out the door for almost new is a great deal.

golf is a lot like life. the more you enjoy it, the better off you are. a3_biggrin.gif

They are a tough iron to hit, but man do they feel awesome when you connect with them! The best part of the deal is that I did the club fitting at Miles of Golf, and the KBS stiff was one of the reccomended shafts. I'll need to get them fitted, they are too short and I'd like to have the loft and lie checked and adjusted if needed. I was able to hit them this afternoon, first time swinging this year as well, so I didnt expect much. They felt great, the ones I miss hit were worm burners from topping (perhaps due to them being too short) or hooks that seemed to be coming off the heel. I'm a pretty good ball striker for the most part, so I'm really pumped to start getting used to these irons. Old1964, I'm in the mid Mich area quite a bit in the summer, I'd love to get together and let you teach me a few tricks with these bad boys.

Hmmmm. Sounds good to me.

More funny - I noticed that you have a Fli-HI Mizuno 3 Iron Hybrid....I just bought one last week after thinking about it over the coldest winter months.

How long have you had yours? And, how do you like it?

Old1964-

I bought the FLI-HI towards the end of last summer and was able to get a few rounds in with it. The thing is AWESOME!. It quickly became my go to club and I was hitting it from everywhere on the course, anywhere from 200-250. Thing is a breeze to hit and is great off the tee on long par 3's or tight par 4's. I was never able to get the hang of hitting the more conventional style hybrid, so when I saw the FLI-HI I was anxious to try it out and it didnt let me down.  As far as the MP58's go, I'm getting nervous about being able to be consistent with them after reading some of the other post in other threads. I hit them a bunch before buying them and they seemed ok, but its a big step up from my previous irons (which I am keeping just in case these things are too tough for me at the beginning of the season) so I'll just out in a lot of range time and see how it goes.

Westcyder-

Where abouts are you on the westside? I golf the K-zoo area several times a year, It would be cool toget to know some of the guys on the site out on the course.

And in my previous post I mis-typed the part about the mis-hits, I was slicing the ball off the heel, not hooking. It was a long day and I felt the need to correct myself for some reason lol.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
