Recently I have been watching the Donald Trump show on TGC about him creating his course in Ireland and how he loves building golf courses. Good show, I like it. But while watching the Masters coverage today, I started wondering why Donald Trump hasn't taken on the task of trumping Augusta (sorry for the pun). But really, he loves having the best of everything. We all know that Augusta is THE most hallowed grounds of golf in the US. Why has he not set out to build a better course? An "Augusta killer" so to speak.

Becuase he couldn't do it. Augusta is half famous because of the tradition, which Trump doesn't have on his side

This... I've had the fortune of playing Trump National Philadelphia and he claims it's a better course than Pine Valley. Well I've also had the luck to play Pine Valley and while Trumps course is beautiful it's not even in the same world as Pine Valley. He could build a course in Augusta and I'm sure it would be very nice but it would never have a major played on it. Plus like Kieran said he would never be able to buy the type of "magic" that Augusta National provides.

I was wondering myself if Trump was just hyping his course with the claims he makes against Pine Valley, thanks for some first hand knowledge.

Trump's overbearing ways as a control freak just about make it too much for me to even watch his show on TGC.

I have gotten where I can hardly stand him.

I am from the South and have lived here all my life. Trump would not be able to pull off another Augusta National because he lacks something he cannot buy : Being part of the "good ole boy" network of the south!

Why doesn't he buy a clue and stop yammering about where the President was born? He's much better at building failed casinos, ruining sports leagues, having terrible hair, getting divorced, and being a reality television minstrel. Oh, yeah...golf.

Donald just found an audience impressed with his bluster and is milking every gullible penny he can out of it. That's what he does best. That trait tends to alienate him amongst his peers, and even he can't organize a major golf tournament by himself. That's why he doesn't do it (take on the Masters, that is).

Because he is not nearly as powerful and respected as his very bad reality shows so carefully portray him.  Trump trying to "take on Augusta" would be worse than Vince McMahon's attempt to take on the NFL

MCK aced it. Plus, Augusta National (and the Masters) is about more than a golf course.  It is about tradition and class and avoiding the commercialism that is rampant today.  I'm not sure if the word "genteel" is still applicable but Augusta has certainly maintained some semblence of "old school" tradition.  All things that Donald Trump works actively against.  Sure he could build a course that would rival Augusta but it would be missing the the intangibles that Augusta has.

Not simply missing the intangibles, but incapable of understanding how important they are.

Augusta seems to be about:

  • Course that blends with the land - McKenzie took a fantastic site and routed a wonderfully challenged and varied set of holes into the land without moving millions of yards of earth
  • Subtle but Penal Hazards - On the surface, Augusta doesn't look too oppressive as the hazards are subtle and part of the natural land features
  • Tradition - Augusta revels in its tradition, with amazing people (like Jones, Eisenhower, etc) who formed a rich history of power in the US
  • Understated Class - the facilities at Augusta aren't fancy; just basic buildings and furnishings unadorned by gilded decor, marble, etc.
  • Privacy - the members at Augusta like their privacy, and keep the club as a private haven away from the press and prying eyes
  • A Haven from the World - Augusta is almost invisible; you don't see it driving by.   It doesn't advertise, and does its best to stay hidden.   Only recently has one been able to see the first 9 holes.

Now, is there anything on the above list that has even the most remote resemblance to anything Trump does????    It seems like Augusta is the "anti-Trump" of golf.

Trump needs advertising how else is he gonna get people to come play his courses. Of course his advertising is simply I'm Donald Trump so you should come play. But hey both techniques work they Augusta and Donald Trump are very successful.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
