Hi Folks,

I need a little advice on a yardage gap issue I have. I play the AP2 irons (5-GW) and my next club down is driver. To remedy this, I got fitted and picked up a 19 degree Taylormade TP Hybrid.

The problem is, I hit my 5-iron 205 yards (190 carry) and the 3-hybrid 245-255 (230 carry) yards. What 1-2 clubs would you use to fill that gap? Would an ap2 4-iron (that should theoretically go 215-220) be close enough?

Hybrids usually go a bit further than the same numbered (lofted) iron so 3h 4-GW is going to leave you with a big gap in the 210-230 carry range. For most guys 210-230 is no-mans land as far as hitting greens, so it's not super important to have a club that flies that far. It might be a different story for you, I don't know. Here is what you could do to tighten up the gaps

3h, 4h, 5h, 5-gw

or

3h, 3i-GW

Or some combination of the above.

A 4-iron in theory would fill it.  Or if you like the hybrid, maybe a 22 or 23 degree hybrid would work.  Another option that is much less expensive is to choke down on the 19º about an inch, inch and a half.  That will take off 10-15 yards.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I would go with a 4-iron.  I have the Adams A4 and changed out the 4 hybrid for a CB2 4-iron and it worked out great.  It plays just like the 5 iron but gets me the next 10 yards.

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
