Are putter covers worth the hassle?

An interesting thing happened the other day. Somewhere in the middle of my round I lost my putter cover. I usually walk when I play and my stand bag has a designated slot for the putter so the only other club it occasionally comes in contact with is my driver, which has a cover, so it never really clangs against anything. I actually enjoyed not messing with the cover: just grabbing my putter and heading to the green and placing it back in its slot when I’m finished.
I realized you Scotty Cameron fans treat your putters like heirlooms and have a lot of money and care invested and thus the extra step of covering it makes sense. But for me, I’ll check in with the pro shop to see if anyone found the cover and if so I’ll use it when placing the clubs in the trunk of my car. But for the actual round, I think I’ll forgo the thing.

The only clubs in my bag with head covers are my graphite shafted woods and hybrids, and my putter (not a SC, it's made from Golfsmith components).  My putter never goes back in the bag without the cover on it.  It serves more than one purpose.

First it protects my putter from any incidental damage to the face, which in my opinion is crucial to good performance.

And secondly, when I take a wedge to the green with me, after chipping I attach the putter head cover to the shaft of the wedge (it has a magnetic closure).  That way I never leave a wedge behind, because I will never get farther away than my bag before I discover the loss.  If I go to replace the head cover on the putter and I can't find it, I immediately know what happened.

My putter cover is no hassle at all, it slips on easily and mags shut securely.

This is exactly why I love my odyssey magnetic putter cover.

I use a putter cover between rounds mainly to protect against bangs in transit. During the round, it's in a side pouch.

Also, I play with a vintage Ping Pal (sometime in 1970s). I have had a couple of people offer to buy it from me, so I use the cover pre-round as "camouflage."

Worth it to me...  Mine gets banged up pretty good on the edges and face if I don't cover it.  I guess it all depends on the players bag setup in the end.

My Ogio Vaporlite has a large curved separation which sits highest and that I use for my putter:

Clubs

When it's in transit or being stored at home the headcover is most definitely on, however when I play a round and the bag is on my trolley I see little point.

putter covers don't work for me ... as it will be used for EVERY hole, it's too much hassle.     I do use covers for most everything else...

I dont find a putter cover to be a hassle at all.  It slips off and then it slips back on after Im done with the hole.

I’ve been around awhile, and the putter cover seems like a fairly recent development. I don’t recall anyone, thirty years ago, using it.

To me, the infinitesimal hassle is well worth it.

I use the one on my Odyssy 2-ball putter when it's in the bag, but whenever my smaller headed putter (pixl) is in play I don't worry about it.

They didn't use 460cc drivers or 60° wedges either, but that doesn't make it wrong or stupid to do so now.

One is an advance in technology the other is being overly fussy in a obsessive-compulsive society.

I have the same ping iwi anser putter - head cover definitely on. I don't find it a hassle - slips on & off with ease and magnets hold it in place, very smart.

Come on. I too have played golf for over 30 years (closer to 35). I don't think it has anything to do with obsessive compulsiveness. it's just that back in the day, there was no such thing as a high end putter and therefore no expensive investment to protect.

I don't think wanting to protect an investment is a symptom of being obsessive-compulsive. It's perfectly normal to want to make sure that something you pay a lot of money for stays in good condition.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
