Clubs I carry are in my signature.  My carry distances in the low end are about 168 - 6i, 180 - 5i, and any lower than that I would call "unpredictable".  The issue I face is hitting greens from 190+, which I would guess a lot of people struggle with.  I can for sure hit my 4i decently, but not always high enough to stop on a green from 185+.  My 5w I hit well, and I like the club, but it has more of a low ball flight, shots will be 200-220 or a little more, but that's after roll.  So when facing a green with bunkers in front or an elevated green from 190+, I just don't know what to hit.

I was considering getting a Hybrid, but I am not sure what I would replace?

Option A - Drop the 3I and put in a Hybrid?  What loft?  How far can I expect to hit it?  Will it fly high enough to stop on a green from 200 yards?

Option B, drop the 5W and replace with a Hybrid, same questions apply.

Option C, something else you guys suggest?

Should I be able to hit my 5W higher?  Or are hybrids much higher than a 5w?  My 5W is is only 18*....

Please let me know what you guys suggest, at this point I hit my 3I maybe once a round, and sometimes not at all, and I hit my 5W on second shots on par 5's, or on some longer par 3's, but it does get use.

A hybrid will not help you in super significant way in stopping the ball from 200 yards away. It will give you more height and less roll but you still have to land it short and let it roll up. So if that is your ONLY goal then Im not sure you need a hybrid.

The biggest things for me that hybrids do that my Irons did not are A) They allow a novice like me to shape shots in terms of fade/draw a little and B) If you mishit them they still carry very well. They also play very nicely off the tee at least for me better then my low irons did.

The other thing that my Hybrids do to save strokes is  on non conventional shots. They don't call em rescue clubs for nothing. I use them probably at least once a round to get me out of low hanging tree branches at one local course and at my home course I use my 5H as a "Chipper" to roll shots along the fairway and up onto the green on a few holes that have very uphill green locations where I cant stop the ball with my wedges.

I love hybrids as a play 3 of them and am considering even adding a 4th. It is my suspicion that if you found a 3 hybrid that was really to your liking it could replace both the 5 wood and the 3i which could really open up your options.

My goal is not necessarily to STOP the ball, but rather to "carry" it past 200 yards in the air, and not land like a scud missle and roll out another 30 yards.

What loft is typical to replace a 5W/3I?

My 3h is 20 degrees some are 19 some are 21. You really just have to try it out. Their weight distribution is like no other club in a golf bag. They are as heavy as an Iron but back weighted more like a wood. Their shafts are also generally longer and more Wood Like in terms of flex and kick point. Go swing a few to get a sense.

If your on a budget I highly recommend Nickent Hybrids. You can find them really cheap and they were widely used on Tour just a few years ago.

However if money is no object or you can at least afford 150-200 or so, Adams makes some really amazing hybrids.

I really encourage you to try them out they are really comfortable consistent clubs. When you hit them really good they are good, high and very long and when you hit them really bad they are nowhere near as bad as the same swing from a long Iron.

I replaced my 3i and 4i with 2 Adams Hybrids (20* and 23*) for the reason you seem to want to. Best move I ever made. I hit my 3H about 210 - 200 with no more than 10yds of role. Couldn't even dream of doing this with my 3i. 4H goes about 195yds with less than 10yds of role. The biggest plus for me was getting the height so that the roll out was not so much. My 3i and 4i were always low chasers. A lot of the greens on my home course are small front to back. Good thing is though if I play them slightly back in my stance I get a lower ball flight with more role if I need it. I can hit them much more consistanly as well. Never worried about pulling the 3H out of the bag. I still have nightmares (cold sweats) about my 3i.

I actually just pulled the trigger on this a couple of days ago.......... picked up a used 27 degree Ping Hybrid to replace my 4 iron. I already carry a 2H and 4H, but I still found 190-200 to be a difficult distance for me, as I'm not comfortable with long irons. At the range, I hit this thing very, very high and it seems to be the distance I was shooting for. We'll see how it holds the greens

a 27 degree will not go that far. a 5 wood is 18 degrees a 3 iron is 20, 4 iron is 23, 5 iron is 26, so that will be replacing a 5 iron or so.  The idea of a rescue is to replace longer irons because they are easier to hit and more versatile out of the rough. You will need something with about 20 degrees of loft for that distance for you. Or you could learn to hit your 3 iron and 4 iron with more control i.e. higher.

You might swap out your 3i for a 7W. Might work better if 5W and 7W were same model.
