I'm traveling to Nashville at 7pm tonight and will be there through Sunday morning for a bachelor party! I want to take my clubs, but that means I would have to buy a travel bag and pay the fees at the airport.  Thing is, I may only get to play one full round while I'm there, maybe.  Do you all think spending $150 just to get my clubs to Nashville is worth it?  I mean, the travel bag is something that I'm going to likely get use out of for a long time.....

Oh, one of my friends is bringing his clubs with him, but he's driving.

Why not have your friend take your clubs along with him? If you trust him enough that is.

When it comes down to it, it's a decision you're going to make. Can you justify $130 for A round of golf for a place you might never play again?

He lives an hour south of me.  If I could get them to him, I would have no problem letting him take them.  It is going to be a heck of a lot of money to play, I may end up looking into rental clubs, but I would love to have my own with me!

I say just go with the rentals. I can understand why you would want your own clubs but renting will give you an opportunity to play something different. Last week I had to rent a set for my league (forgot my clubs. 62 miles round trip to retrive them. No way.) and tried out these Cleveland SGI clubs. Never tried SGI's before then and can't say I was a big fan but at least I know something on how they perform. It was an interesting experience at least.

And besides your going to a bachelor party/week-end. I doubt the golf played would be all that serious anyway.

If you think you'd ever travel with your clubs again then buying a travel bag is a decent investment.   Just having it may entice you to travel more with clubs and find new places to play.     Ten years from now you'll have forgotten all about the cost of the bag and baggage cost, but you'll likely remember that great time with your buddies.

Or as the Mastercard commercials say, "Travel Bag: $100.    Baggage surcharge: $50.    Golf with your buddies in a last fling before marriage: Priceless"

Lol, love it.  I'm definately going to get good use out of a travel bag.  I plan on taking 2-3 golf vacations this summer alone.  I'm just not sure if paying to get my clubs there is really worth it considering I'm not going to play much and when I do, I'm likely going to be hungover

I think if you're playing in something competitive you'll be better with your own clubs, whether it means shelling out for a travel bag or driving an hour to give them to your buddy.

If you're playing golf with your mates just to enjoy it then rent them; it'll save you money, you'll still have fun and you have no hassle.

Sounds like the best alternative is to rent clubs at the golf course, and buy the travel bag for future use.  $$ spent on the airline fee can be used in the champagne room.

Perhaps think of it this way.   The baggage surcharge cost is going to be roughly the same as rental clubs when you travel, so that's a wash.    The investment in the travel bag is giving you the confidence and comfort of playing with your own clubs instead of rentals.    If you really love your clubs, they fit you just right, etc. and that is worth something to you, then the bag is a good investment.   If it isn't, then getting rentals is certainly less hassle and gives you the opportunity to try out different clubs every once in awhile.

I like my clubs, Ping G10, but don't love them.  I'm just used to them.  I bought them last year and the visual appeal is fading quickly.  Been looking at the AP2 a lot lately, just want to make sure my swing is ready for them.

I'm flying over this weekend and I'm bringing my clubs with me. I got a travel case for them and I'm willing to pay the extra $25 both ways every time I fly to ensure I have my own clubs when I play. I don't fly often, but I do once or twice a year so having a bag for my clubs is worth it IMO. I really don't like using clubs that aren't mine. It's not like I'm really good and the slightest change throws me off, I just like mine. I got a $80 soft-sided bag because basically all I wanted was outer protection for my golf bag. If you pack the clubs in your normal bag I don't really see the point in getting a hard-sided travel bag. Just put headcovers on your clubs, put them in the bag, and you should be fine. I've actually taken my bag, put the rain-head on it, and checked it with my clubs before with no problems. Something would have to go very wrong to damage your normal bag in transit. For me, it wasn't worth it to pay way more for something far more bulky. [edit] And all the cheap hard-sided cases I saw didn't have side pockets. That was a deal-breaker. They also take more space to store, another deal-breaker considering my lack of storage space at the moment. But everyone has different circumstances.

I've only traveled Southwest with my clubs, so no extra charge.  And I got a cheap hard case for something like $55 or $60, works great and complete protection.

If you know what course you are going to play give them a call and see what the rental clubs will be  Who knows?  It may be a brand/model you would like to try out.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I have no idea where we are going to play.

Originally, I planned to drive or ride with my friend, but he has a softball tourney in another part of TN on Saturday so he is leaving sooner than I'd like.  I also found a plane ticket that would be even with/cheaper than driving for me.... Dodge Ram.  And I don't know if I will have enough left in the tank to drive back after I'm done with Nashville!!! lol

As close to a break-even as it is (counting the travel cover as an investment since you'll use it again), I'd bring the clubs even for one round.  The only exception would be if you were otherwise going to be very light on luggage and this was going to make it a lot more complicated.  Even then, I'd probably do it, but I'd be a bit more inclined just to rent.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
