I often find that I can execute a practise swing that feels great, with good weight transfer, rhythm and balance. Yet when I swing for real the desire to hit at the ball takes over and the result is often a horrible shot.

I recognize that the good feeling on the practise swing may be false, but that "hitting impulse" seems very real, and it's spoiling my enjoyment of the game. I have found very little info on the golf sites about translating a feels like a good practise swing into a solid strike.

I know I should be hitting through the ball, and not at the ball, but how do I prevent myself from doing that? What should I be focusing on when addressing the ball for real?

Any ideas, or threads I may have missed?

Welcome to TST forum !

The only thing I can think of is that with a practice swing it doesn't matter if you look up, it will always feel perfect, but it might help you if you take a few pratice swings, so it is dialed in, and then hit the ball the very same way......

It happens so often that I am not pleased with my first practice swing, bc. the uneven lie needs a grip down or up etc. so I make another practice swing to dial in.

etc.

I really only take practice swings when around the green or if i am not sure of the lie i have. Though i have taken a practice swing, hit a nice patch of rough, then catch a flier lie, that sucks.

My practice swings usually have a swing feeling i want to try to mimic. Most of my golf life, i have good hand eye coordination, so i can away with a bit of a casting in my swing. Instead of the clubhead bottoming out past the ball, it bottoms out just at the ball. So i tend to hit semi-solid shots, but really high. I can get away with this from time to time. So i am trying to get the feeling of holding that angle with my right wrist at impact, getting the left hand ahead of the ball more. So i will take a few practice swings exagerating the feelign of keeping that angle. That helped out yesterday a bit, i had a much more penetrating ball flight.

Thats what i like to do, try to get the feeling of the shot i like to hit. Not really trying to make a perfect swing.

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
