So Ive only been playing for about 6 months andthat first month i bought me just a standard beginners club set (Top Flite XL). So a friend of my cousin is selling a Titleist 983k driver in good condion. So my question is I just wanna know if it would be better to play an older Titleist Driver thats been around and used or just play with the new not so great Top Flite driver which is just ok? Off topic i had bought a used Nike Driver that got stolen outta my bag at the golf course.

Depends on what he's selling the Titleist driver for.  You might want to check the Taylor Made and Callaway pre-owned sites for drivers that are possibly newer at a comparable price.  Also Globalgolf.com sells used clubs at decent prices as well if you want to compare the price your cousins friend is selling his for.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

The 983K was a very good driver, but even at $50, it's probably not the best driver for a new golfer.  Look for used Ping G5, Taylormade R7 Limited, Callaway 454, etc in that same price range.

In the Bag: TaylorMade R11 TP - TaylorMade R7 TP TS - Cleveland Halo - TM TP 2009 3-PW - Vokey SM 52 - Vokey SM 60 - Rife Barbados CS - ProV1x

On the Computer:  Analyzr Pro

The 983k was my favorite....a LONG time ago!  Really long when struck well...but not so forgiving at 365cc, especially compared to today's 460cc giants (so i'd definitely agree with Delav).  I just looked at mine currently stored in my basement--it practically looks like a 3-wood by some current standards!

You also need to look at what shaft is in it btw, as Titleist offered custom shafts for them, often pretty stiff and low-launching "players'" shafts that might not suit a beginner well.

Plus, $50 sounds steep for a used driver that old....you can get plenty of brand-new drivers from reputable companies for less than $100 on clearance websites like rockbottomgolf.com etc.  The Nickent 4dx Evolver which I play and gets plenty of love from me and others on some different threads here is only $69, and the non-adjustable 4dx is only $49...

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

I still use the 983E driver and haven't been able to find anything I can hit better.  Both the 983 models were good drivers...and still are.  It kind of boils down to how much you want to invest.  If it has a shaft you can hit, it would be a good pick-up, but maybe for less than $50.  It might be a good starter club for maybe $30-35.  That way if you find out you can't hit it well, you can get something different and not be out much.  Maybe see if you can borrow it and see if you can hit it.

Agree with others' comments about getting a closeout model for cheap.  If you are willing to spend a little more, you can probably get something a little better suited for a beginner.

My personal opinion is that the 983 would be better than the starter driver with your set, but not for $50.  Spend a little more and get something newer, or try and get that club a little cheaper.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Depending on the shaft that is in it $50 is about middle of the road price wise. I hit a K back in high school and found one for $40 on craigslist and began rotating it into my bag as my daily gamer, unfortunately it still had the 10 year old factory Titleist shaft in it which broke while hitting a drive off the 7th. I put a Harrison Saga in it and still game it on Windy days!

In my honest Opinion the K is the last driver Titleist produced that was solid and forgiving. I had the 909D2 and D3 and tried the new COMP last year with adjustable hozzle, although they look good at address I was disappointed at the lazy ball flight and I could not work the ball and shape my shot. I sold both of the newer models shortly after finding another K!

Cheers

PS If you want a good decent beginner driver for the price go with any of the Adams Speedline series, I picked up an original for my father for about $60 on ebay. I play the 9064ls as my dedicated gamer. You will find out that the shaft has more to do with the club than the head, that and eye appeal. If it doesnt look good to you at address you probably wont hit it well!

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
