I have struggled mightily with my long game since I started golfing last year including anything off the tee and long approach shots.  There isn't anything more frustrating than advancing your ball down a fairway 20' to 50' at a time due to thin or topped shots.

I recently started using Ping G15 Hybrids and I cannot tell you how much I love these clubs off the tee or from the fairway.  I never got the hang of hitting fairway woods or hybrids that resemble fairway woods, but these Pings are completely different.  I am surprised that they've made such a difference.  Maybe it's psychological because they more closely resemble irons.  At this point, I don't care.  They just work.

The 17* tends to have a lower trajectory with roll and I admit that I don't quite have the hang of it yet....but I'm doing way better than with previous clubs at that loft.  What can I say about the 20*?  This thing is so easy to get in the air and hit around 200 yards.  I've already told my wife not to make me choose between my 20* G15 and her because I'd have to think about it.  Even though it's not in the "budget" and I hit my 4i OK, I see the 23* going in my bag in the near future!

For the record, I have no affiliation with Ping (other than as a customer).  And BTW, I think these clubs are "beautiful" .

I ordered a G15 17 deg hybrid last week and hoping it helps my long game out.   I hit my 4i fairly well however my Burner 3 hybrid was hit and miss.  When I catch it great its a 200 yard laser beam, but those shots are very few and far between.  Since I hit my 4i pretty well I wanted something that resembled more of an iron and gave me the distance between my 4i and driver.  The G15 17 deg. seemed to fit the bill.  I had all intentions of walking into Golf Galaxy and buying a 4 wood, but opted for this.  Shots just felt much more crisp.  I will give up a little yardage for a cleaner hit.      We shall see.  Hopefully it comes in soon.  I had them order from Ping a 1/2" shorter and flattened 2 degrees.  Also went with an undersized red grip.

Is your 4i a 24* club?  If so, what kind of distances do you get out of your 17*, 20* and 4i?

Once I put the 17* in play I am wondering if I will have too much gap in between it and my 4i which is a 22* club.

My 4i on a good day probably carries about 180.  I am hoping the 17* gets me 200ish.    To be honest I don't think I need a 190 yd club.

But I would have room in the bag for one more club, being I just removed my 3w and 19* 3 hybrid.

If you would be hitting a 17* hybrid 200 yds, you have a 190 yds club if you grip down about a half inch .....

You actually don't need to buy extra clubs for covering all distances !

I'm still working on consistency with the 17* but on a good strike I get a nice (but lower) trajectory and 200 yards.  I've gone longer but not consistently and I hope that will change as I use it more.  When I miss hit, I still tend to get 180 which I can live with.  The 20* seems to carry an easy 190 carry and I tend to hit it cleaner with a higher ball flight.  This is my club of choice when in the rough on long approaches.   (If I'm in the fairway, I'll use the 17*)

My 20* has the Aldila Serrano shaft while the 17* has the stock Ping shaft. I'm not sure if (or how much) of a difference the two shafts make.  Since I'm striking the 20* so well, I plan on getting the 23* with a Serrano shaft as well.  I don't want to mess with success!

There seems to be a compounding effect that is definitely psychological in my case.  As I build confidence with these clubs, it's easier to stay relaxed on the course which leads to more consistent ball striking.  I'm still a hacker, but I'm having more fun playing golf.

Thanks for the reply.  I will probably wait to see and get mine on a course and check yardages before buying anything else.  I've already bought all new irons, a hybrid, 2 drivers, a 3 w and now this Ping Hybrid, since January.  Thankfully the golf budget has been kind to me this season.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to provide a follow-up.

Ended up pulling the trigger on a K15 5w (19*) last week.  Stock length with Soft Regular shaft.

It carries about 185-190 with 200 on rollout on the monitor and course.  Very solid club off the tee and fairway.  For the first time I am confident using a FW.

The Ping G15 17* (2 deg flat and 1/2" shorter) hybrid came in today and on the monitor I was seeing 175 carry with about 190-200 on rollout.

Granted both clubs are roughly the same yardage, but I plan to use the hybrid for punch outs and rough situations and the 5w off the tee as needed for controlled shots and fairway.

The K15 3wood was too erratic for me and it was only about 10 yards longer than the 5w was.  I opted for consistency.

I am playing on some longer courses with many doglegs so both clubs should get a workout this week.  Will post a review on how the hybrid plays.

Let me know if you figure it out.  On the simulator at the shop I started making much better contact with mine after placing the ball towards the toe at address.

But at the range today it was not working.  Out of about 20 shots I only hit 2 or 3 clean.

Have some work to do with it. Normally I grip down on my longer clubs to where with the hybrid I wasn't.  So that will be my next adjustment (gripping down about 0.5 - 1")

I went to the range yesterday and could not hit my irons worth a damn and even the Pings were a little "off" so I can't tell you that I've figured it out.  However, I still did better with the Ping hybrids than I did with my irons.  I hit a lot of topped and thin shots which are my specialty.  I wish I could figure out what I did differently at the range compared with the last couple of weeks where my ball striking was much better.  It's absolutely baffling to me.  I "feel" like I'm swinging the irons and hybrids the same but am clearly not.  Nevertheless, I have some perverse satisfaction that on a bad day I was still able to hit the Pings better than my irons.

I added a 23* to my bag last weekend and the 4i is now out.  Both my 20* and 23* have Aldila shafts versus the stock Ping shafts.  I don't know if it's the loft or shaft or combination of the two but the 20 and 23 are easier to get airborne with a nice trajectory (not that the 17* is all that bad).

Without a doubt, the Ping G15 hybrids have been my best investment in improving my long game, but they're clearly not a substitute for terrible ball striking.  I've proved that!

I'm still working with the 17* hybrid.  I normally carry my 4i about 170-175 which is what I am getting out of the 17* on mishits.

I know it has more in it, I just cant seem to catch it flush.  Range session is in order.

  • 1 month later...

Just a follow-up to my earlier posts.  I had to finally give up on the 17* hybrid.  After 4 range sessions and a few rounds with a couple hits I couldn't muster up even one flush shot.

I handed it to my brother who is a better ball striker and he duffed it on 3 straight attempts.

I emailed Ping last week and told them I thought perhaps something was wrong on the head or perhaps the 2* flat head might be causing my issues.  Figured I wouldn't even get an email reply, but low and behold within an hour I got a call back from a rep at Ping.  The rep said he was doubtful anything was wrong with the head and proceeded to ask me where I was fitted (Golf Galaxy), about my measurements as well as the club specs.  He wrote everything down and handed it off to one of their fitters.

The rep gets back on the phone and says "Golf Galaxy did everything correct at your fitting except for one thing".

I said, oh yeah, what is that.  The rep said "would you ever play an 8.5* degree driver?" I said, nope that would never work me since I don't swing hard enough".

He says "Exactly".  In a nutshell my swing speed does is not high enough to properly hit a 17* hybrid.  They told me I probably max out around a 20* and that the 17*'s should be left in the hands of better handicap players.

At first he said to send back the club and he would see what he could do.  I told him I don't really want to send the club back for them to find nothing wrong with the club.  Told him the club is not even in my bag anymore because it's useless to me and told him I had to buy a K15 FW in the meantime but that it left me too much of a distance between it and my 4i.

He then emailed me a fedex prepaid shipping label and said to send it back that he would make it right.

Club arrived there yesterday, got a call from the rep and Ping plans to send out a new 20* tomorrow.

Now that is customer service !!!!  The only thing I was out was the Wynn grip I had installed on the club but I could care less.

Like I said, I was happy as a fat kid with cake to even get a call back from somebody, let alone get a new club out of the deal.

I have emailed Taylormade several times with questions and never get a call, let alone an email back from them.

Once I get enough cash I plan on putting some Ping irons in play.

Great commwnts. I have had the 17 def G15 hybrid and it is one of the easiest and most consistent golf clubs I've had the luck to use. What is one of the best things is it can be used in place of a 5 wood, 3 or 4 iron. What surprised me the most was both the control of the shots and how easy it is to use. Real versatile club!

I'm going to check this afternoon at Dick's for the K15 hybrid. I recently bought the K15 3W and 5W. I'm hitting the 3W ~250 which is pretty nice. I think the 5W is more in the range of 220. My next shorter club is a 5 iron, which I hit about 180-185. That leaves a gap the a 4H could cover. I could choke a 5W and handle the gap though.

K15 are really nice clubs. I have also had great luck with the G15 3W and hitting it about 240. What I like is the control and sometimes use the 3W instead of the 1W. Personally think the entire 15 series including G15, I15 and K15 is one of Pings best.

I would like it if the K15 3W and 5W had a little higher profile. Pretty low like a tight lies. Makes me nervous from the rough.

The best luck I have had in the rough is with the hybrid especially the 5W. The 5W has been pretty good in the short to moderate but only if it is pretty dry. Fairway grass really fits the 5W best and what I like is it is a pretty crisp swing and easy to generate pretty good club head speed.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
