Mizuno JPX-800 Pros vs. Titleist AP1 710s

Has anyone played both sets of these irons?  I'm currently playing TaylorMade Burner 09s with the stock regular shafts.  I never got them fitted (was before I was educated on fittings).  I play them alright, but I'd prefer a higher tradjectory.  Even my short irons have a mid, boring flight.  And I'm just not into the stronger lofts.  My club selection based on yardage is sometimes so off because of it.  Not a huge fan of the ridiculously large amount of offset and the heads are just so bulky.

I'm currently playing 1-2 rounds a week and shoot consistantly in the low to mid 80s.

I've read up on both the JPX-800 Pros and the AP1s and they both sound like they'd be a good fit for my game.  AP1 heads look to be a little more larger which I'm guessing are more forgiving than the 800 Pros.

Going to my local golf shop here in Charlottesville this weekend to see if they have both sets.  (Have a gift card for the store too which will help).  If not, driving down to Richmond to the Golf Galaxy.

I've demo'ed the JPX 800 Pros and they feel great. Veeerrry close to getting them. They feel great and their lofts aren't insanely strong - they were just about dead on with my current Callaway x18's. Lots of JPX 800 Pro posts out there (I know, i've looked and started a few) so there is plenty of info out there on them.

Ive hit both and yes your initional assessment of the differences if correct. The Titleist are good irons but the forged Mizunos are just like butter. The Mizunos have minimal offset and a thinner top line than most game improvement irons as well. You should try them both back to back and compare the difference.

I hit both of these, plus several other irons, before deciding on the Titleist AP1's. They just produce a great feel. On solid shots I get great feel, ball flight and distance. On missed shots, I can honestly say that I still get great ball flight and distance, but have enough feel to tell I did not make good contact. Some of the other irons I hit, feel the same no matter how terrible of a shot you hit, this happened with the Ping G series for the most part. I would go hit all the irons you can get your hands on before you make a $700 decision. Hope this helps

Be interested to see what you decide. I have the same irons as you and want to change for pretty much the same reasons. I am considering the AP1's or maybe Ping I15's. I haven't had a chance to hit either yet but the titleist guy is coming to my club shortly. Will have to try a set of JPX800's if I can find someone who has them in stock too. What about the MP53's?

As far as forgiveness is concerned, the JPX-800 Pro's are more comparable to the Titleist AP2's. If you're looking for the forgiveness of the AP1's, then look into the JPX-800's (non-pro). The AP1's and 800's will probably give you the higher trajectory you're looking for.

I've hit the AP2's and 800's and the 800's are definitely more forgiving, with a higher trajectory. I can't comment on the AP1 or 800-pro's (I imagine the AP1's will be more forgiving with higher trajectories like the 800's)

But, go hit them and decide for yourself :)

Finally stopped by my local shop on the way home from work yesterday.  Looked at both sets and definitely like the look of the Mizunos more than the Titleists.  Thinner top line and sole for the JPX 800 Pros.  The AP1s are just as bulky as my TaylorMade Burners...maybe even more.  A little disappointed about that.

Talked to the staff there about my game and what I'm looking for.  Decided that the Mizunos would fit best and they actually gave me a full demo set to take home.  Just got back from the range a few hours ago and like a few of you said - the forged Mizunos are like butter.  First time for me using a forged iron.  The demo set had the Dynalite Gold XP S300 shafts.  Produced a higher ball flight with impressive distance.  Got the feedback in the hands on miss hits, but shots still held the line with distance.  Felt a little weird in the hands with standard grips since I play a midsize grip, but I didn't let that bother me too much.  Couldn't hit the AP1s, but atleast I could compare the Mizunos and my current TaylorMades tonight.  Very pleased.

Back to the shop tomorrow to talk some more and see if they have more demos I can take out before I make my decision.  Big points go towards the Mizunos today.  A great set, for sure.

That is wierd that you couldn't feel where you hit with the pings.  I can certainly tell if and where I mishit my G5's.

So I made the decision and went with the JPX 800 Pros.  Double checked and picked up the AP1s and even the AP2s, just for kicks.  Looked again at the Adams CB2s and although they are a sweet looking club, the slightly smaller head kept me away.  Got fitted tonight and the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer is a pretty cool system.  Recommended the Dynamic Golds, Project X, and KBS shafts.  After hitting the 3 shafts, went with the Project X.  The DGs and KBS just felt too heavy.  Will get my prefered grip put on when they arrive at the shop on Wednesday.

Can't wait for next week.  New sticks on Wednesday and then my summer vacation starts Thursday where I'll be playing plenty of golf during my 12 days off.  I will post some results if anyone is interested.

Yeah definately post up some results. I am going to be buying new irons in the next few months (told myself I have to break 80 first though, doh!) and AP1's and JPX800's are top of the list at the moment!

If the par of the course is 69, 70 or 71 and he shoots mid 80's (i.e 85 or 86)

Congrats,.... I enjoy mine more and more each time I go out,.... well there are days I don't like any club in my bag,....lol   I also play a midsize grip and had Mizuno put on a set of their blue/black Mizuno new decade midsize grips on. I went with the Dynalite XP shafts and love that high ball flight,.... especially on my long irons. I was surprised at just how quickly I got comfortable with my new 800pro's on the course. It's kinda surprising at just how popular the JPX-800 pro's are. When I went looking for irons I started off looking at Callaways and wound up at the Mizuno tent just for the sake of it, and low and behold that what I wound up with. I can just imagine at how popular they would be if Mizuno had the big advertising dollars that Callaway and Taylormade does.

Course I play is par 70.

Thanks!  I pick them up on Wednesday.  The shaft optimizer recommended the Project X shafts since I have a high swing speed.  Can't wait to get out on the course.

Wow. sounds like we have similar tastes in clubs. I too had the '09 Burners and opted for the JPX800 PRO's after considering the AP1's and the CB2's. I was on the fence and the JPX's felt really nice. I'm a high handicapper but, I play 2-3 times a week and am getting better with them. If anyone cares, I ordered them with the KBS shafts.

I don't think you could go wrong on any of those clubs but, what sold me was the "feel" of the JPX800's.
